## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

Find out which technologies a website uses: **CMS** (WordPress, Shopify, Webflow…), **ecommerce platform**, **analytics** and tag managers, **JavaScript frameworks** and libraries, **CDN**, web server, programming language, and with DNS the **email provider** (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365) and DNS host. Give a list of domains, or a dataset from another Actor, and get one row per website with every technology, its **version** when the site shows it, a confidence score and categories.

It uses the open Wappalyzer fingerprints ([enthec/webappanalyzer](https://github.com/enthec/webappanalyzer), GPL-3.0): more than 7,000 technologies.

**$1.50 per 1,000 websites analysed.** Websites that cannot be reached, or whose robots.txt closes the page, are free. No browser, no proxy, no API key.

### Quick start

```json
{
  "urls": ["wordpress.org", "https://www.shopify.com"]
}
```

One row per website (a real run on pypi.org, trimmed):

```json
{
  "url": "https://pypi.org",
  "status": 200,
  "title": "PyPI · The Python Package Index",
  "technologyCount": 8,
  "technologyNames": ["EthicalAds", "Font Awesome", "gunicorn", "HSTS", "Open Graph", "Python", "RSS", "Stimulus"],
  "categories": {
    "Advertising": ["EthicalAds"],
    "Font scripts": ["Font Awesome"],
    "Web servers": ["gunicorn"],
    "JavaScript frameworks": ["Stimulus"]
  },
  "technologies": [
    {"name": "gunicorn", "version": null, "confidence": 100, "categories": ["Web servers"], "website": "https://gunicorn.org"}
  ]
}
```

### What it checks

From one HTTP request per website: response headers, cookies, meta tags, the HTML, script URLs, inline scripts, page text, DOM selectors and the URL. Technologies implied by others are added (WordPress → PHP, MySQL), and the fingerprints' "requires" and "excludes" rules are applied. With *Check DNS records*, MX, TXT, NS, SOA and CNAME records add email, DNS and verification services.

Fingerprints that need a browser to run the page's JavaScript (`js` variables) are not used, so technologies that only appear after JavaScript runs can be missed. Most CMS, ecommerce platforms, analytics, CDNs and servers are seen without a browser.

### Use it for

- **Lead lists**: find every Shopify or WooCommerce store in a list of domains, or companies on a competitor's platform.
- **Competitor research**: what a competitor's site runs, and when it changes (schedule the Actor).
- **Sales enrichment**: add the tech stack to company records from another Actor through `datasetId`.
- **AI agents**: through the Apify MCP server, an agent can ask "what does this site run on?".

### Input

| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| `urls` | | Domains or URLs |
| `checkDns` | true | Also read DNS records |
| `minConfidence` | 50 | Leave out lower-confidence findings |
| `maxConcurrency` | 5 | Websites in parallel |
| `datasetId`, `urlField`, `maxDatasetItems` | | Read websites from a dataset |

### Output

One row per website: `url`, `finalUrl` (after redirects), `status`, `title`, with DNS on `emailProvider` (who receives the domain's email, read from its MX records: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho, Proton, a security gateway such as Mimecast, or "Other (host)") and `mxHosts`, `technologyCount`, `technologyNames`, `categories` (category → technologies), `technologies` (name, version, confidence, categories, website, `implied` when added by another technology), or `error`.

### What it costs

| Run | Price |
|---|---|
| 100 websites | $0.15 |
| 10,000 websites | $15.00 |

You only pay for websites analysed. The run stops cleanly at your spending limit.

### Good to know

- robots.txt is honoured: a page that robots.txt closes is not requested and not charged.
- One request at a time per website, with a short pause; many websites run in parallel.
- Private and internal addresses (localhost, 10.x, 192.168.x, cloud metadata) are blocked, including every redirect.
- Detection is only as good as what a site shows: some sites hide their server or remove version numbers.
- Fingerprints come from the open-source project above and are refreshed when the Actor is rebuilt.

# Actor input Schema

## `urls` (type: `array`):

Domains or URLs, one per line: example.com or https://example.com/shop. The page you give is analysed (usually the home page).

## `checkDns` (type: `boolean`):

Also read MX, TXT, NS, SOA and CNAME records to find the email provider (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365…), DNS host and verification services.

## `minConfidence` (type: `integer`):

Leave out technologies found with lower confidence. Technologies implied by another one (PHP by WordPress) often have 50.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many websites are analysed in parallel. Requests to one website are always made one at a time.

## `datasetId` (type: `string`):

ID of an Apify dataset.

## `urlField` (type: `string`):

Field with the website in each dataset item. Use dots for nested fields (company.website).

## `maxDatasetItems` (type: `integer`):

Read at most this many items from the dataset.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "urls": [
    "wordpress.org",
    "https://www.shopify.com"
  ],
  "checkDns": true,
  "minConfidence": 50,
  "maxConcurrency": 5,
  "urlField": "url",
  "maxDatasetItems": 1000
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

One row per website: technologies found, grouped by category.

## `fullResults` (type: `string`):

Every field, including versions, confidence, categories and the technology website.
