# Domain WHOIS & Availability Checker — Bulk RDAP Lookup (`scarlet_harrier/domain-whois-rdap`) Actor

Paste a list of domains; get registered/available, registrar, creation and expiry dates, days to expiry, status codes and nameservers. Uses the official RDAP protocol (the modern WHOIS) with a DNS fallback. No API key, no browser, no personal data.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Domain WHOIS & Availability Checker — Bulk RDAP Lookup

Paste a list of domains. Get back, for each one: **registered or available**, registrar, creation date, **expiry date and days to expiry**, EPP status codes (e.g. `clientTransferProhibited`, `redemptionPeriod`) and nameservers — as a table you can export to CSV, JSON or Excel, or pull via API.

### What it does

- **Uses RDAP**, the official successor to WHOIS that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry. Servers are found from IANA's bootstrap registry, so 1,200+ TLDs work out of the box (.com, .net, .org, .uk, .app, .dev and most new gTLDs).
- **DNS fallback** for TLDs whose registry runs no public RDAP service (e.g. .de, .io): tells you whether the domain is delegated, without dates.
- **Accepts messy input**: URLs, `www.` hosts and subdomains are reduced to the registrable domain; duplicates are removed.
- **Structured JSON, not raw WHOIS text** — no parsing of registry-specific formats.
- **No API key, no browser, no proxies.**

### Use cases

- Bulk availability checks for brand or product name shortlists
- Tracking expiry dates across a domain portfolio (schedule it weekly)
- Spotting domains in `redemptionPeriod` or `pendingDelete`
- Enriching a list of company websites with registrar and age

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `domains` | Domains or URLs, e.g. `example.com`, `https://www.example.co.uk/page`. |
| `maxConcurrency` | Parallel lookups (default 5). |

```json
{ "domains": ["apify.com", "bbc.co.uk", "my-new-startup-name.com"] }
```

### Output

```json
{
  "domain": "apify.com",
  "tld": "com",
  "availability": "registered",
  "registered": true,
  "source": "rdap",
  "registrar": "Amazon Registrar, Inc.",
  "registrarIanaId": "468",
  "createdAt": "2009-06-02T17:14:10Z",
  "updatedAt": "2026-05-16T16:53:04Z",
  "expiresAt": "2035-06-02T17:14:10Z",
  "daysToExpiry": 3143,
  "statuses": ["client transfer prohibited"],
  "nameservers": ["ns-1225.awsdns-25.org", "ns-1928.awsdns-49.co.uk", "ns-449.awsdns-56.com", "ns-839.awsdns-40.net"],
  "dnssec": true,
  "rdapServer": "https://rdap.verisign.com/com/v1/",
  "note": null
}
```

`availability` is one of `registered`, `available` (registry RDAP has no record), `probably available` (DNS fallback found no delegation) or `unknown`.

### Pricing

Pay per domain checked. You only pay for domains that get a definite registered/available answer; `unknown` results are free.

### Notes

- **No personal data.** Registrant, admin and technical contacts are never collected or returned — only registry-level facts about the domain.
- "Available" means the registry holds no record. Premium, reserved or blocked names can still be unavailable to register; confirm at a registrar before buying.
- Registries rate-limit RDAP. Keep `maxConcurrency` at 5 or below for large lists.
- This Actor was built and is maintained with AI assistance, with human review. Issues are answered within a few days.

# Actor input Schema

## `domains` (type: `array`):

Domain names or URLs, e.g. example.com or https://www.example.co.uk/page. Subdomains and paths are stripped to the registrable domain where possible.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many domains to look up at once. Registries rate-limit; 5 is safe.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "domains": [
    "apify.com",
    "bbc.co.uk",
    "wikipedia.org",
    "probably-unregistered-example-7q2.com"
  ],
  "maxConcurrency": 5
}
```

// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("scarlet_harrier/domain-whois-rdap").call(input);

// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
