## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

The most complete scraper of the register of charities for England and Wales. Every charity comes back with its published email, phone, website and address, the full trustee board with roles, appointment dates and each trustee's other charities, five years of income, expenditure, assets and liabilities to the exact pound, staff, volunteer and salary-band counts, and the filing history with links to the filed accounts. You can filter on income, spending, purpose, beneficiary group, council area, country of operation, grant makers, overdue filings and registration or removal dates, then keep only the charities that publish an email.

### What it does

The actor searches the public register of charities for England and Wales, applies your filters, and writes one normalized record per charity to the run's dataset. Around 172,000 charities are currently registered and a further 186,000 removed ones remain searchable.

Each record covers everything the register publishes about a charity in one row:

- **Contact block** for outreach: email, phone, website, full postal address and postcode.
- **People**: every trustee with role, appointment date and the other charities they are a trustee of, plus trustee, employee and volunteer counts and the number of staff in each salary band above £60k.
- **Money**: latest total income and expenditure, the income and expenditure split by source, income from government contracts and grants, and a five-year history of income, expenditure, assets, long-term investments, pension scheme position and total liabilities. Figures are exact pound values, not the rounded ones shown on screen.
- **Governance and identity**: registration and removal dates with reasons, organisation type, Companies House number and link, working and former names, gift aid recognition, other regulators, declared policies, land and property, governing document and charitable objects.
- **Filings**: annual returns and accounts for the last five periods with the date received, whether they were on time or late, and a download link to the filed accounts.
- **Classification**: what the charity does, who it helps, how it helps, where it operates, and whether it is primarily a grant maker.

Values the register does not publish for a charity are returned as `null`, and financial years the charity never reported are `null` rather than zero.

### Quickstart

Open the actor, paste this into the input, and press Run. It returns 12 food bank charities with an income of £50k or more that publish an email address.

```json
{
  "searchTerm": "food bank",
  "searchIn": ["charityName"],
  "incomeMin": 50000,
  "withEmailOnly": true,
  "maxResults": 12
}
```

Leave `searchTerm` empty to sweep the whole register by filters alone. All filters combine with logical AND.

### Run via API and CLI

Start a run and wait for it to finish, then read the dataset. Replace `<TOKEN>` with your Apify API token.

Run synchronously and get dataset items in one call:

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/scrapers_lat~uk-charity-commission-scraper/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=<TOKEN>" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"searchTerm":"hospice","searchIn":["charityName"],"incomeMin":500000,"maxResults":50}'
```

Start a run asynchronously:

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/scrapers_lat~uk-charity-commission-scraper/runs?token=<TOKEN>" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"grantMakersOnly":true,"incomeMin":1000000,"maxResults":500}'
```

Apify CLI:

```bash
apify call scrapers_lat/uk-charity-commission-scraper \
  --input '{"charityNumbers":["1089464","202918"]}'
```

### Fetch results

Every run writes to a dataset. Fetch items as JSON, CSV, or Excel by changing `format`:

```bash
## JSON
curl "https://api.apify.com/v2/datasets/<DATASET_ID>/items?token=<TOKEN>&clean=true&format=json"
## CSV
curl "https://api.apify.com/v2/datasets/<DATASET_ID>/items?token=<TOKEN>&clean=true&format=csv"
## Paginate large datasets
curl "https://api.apify.com/v2/datasets/<DATASET_ID>/items?token=<TOKEN>&offset=1000&limit=1000"
```

`<DATASET_ID>` is returned as `defaultDatasetId` in the run object. `clean=true` drops empty and internal fields.

### Billing and limits

- **Pay per result.** You are charged per charity record returned (`result` event). See the [pricing tab](https://apify.com/scrapers_lat/uk-charity-commission-scraper/pricing) for the current per-result price.
- **No charge on failure.** If a run errors, the actor writes a single item with a populated `error` field and does not charge for it. Empty runs cost nothing.
- **Filtered-out charities are free.** Records dropped by `withEmailOnly`, `withPhoneOnly` or `withWebsiteOnly` are never returned or charged.
- **Spend cap respected.** Set `maxTotalChargeUsd` on the run; once reached, the actor stops emitting and charging further billable results.
- **Free Apify plans** are capped at 10 records per run. Upgrade for higher `maxResults`.
- **Very large pulls** are handled automatically: a search that matches more than the register can page through is split into registration-date slices so the sweep stays complete.

### FAQ and troubleshooting

**A run returned 0 records. Why?**
The filter combination matched nothing. Loosen the filters, drop `searchIn`, or check the spelling of a council area or country. Zero-result runs are not charged.

**Why did a name search return unrelated charities?**
By default the search term is matched against the charity's objects and classifications as well as its name. Set `searchIn` to `["charityName"]` for a name-only search.

**Are the financial figures exact?**
Yes. Income, expenditure, assets and liabilities are returned as exact pound values rather than the rounded figures shown on screen. Financial years a charity never reported come back as `null`, not `0`.

**Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?**
No. This is the register for England and Wales. Scottish and Northern Irish charities appear only when they are also registered in England and Wales.

**Can I get the filed accounts themselves?**
Each record carries `accounts` with a `documentUrl` per filed document and `latestAccountsUrl` for the most recent set, so you can download the PDFs separately.

**How do I build a clean outreach list?**
Combine `withEmailOnly` with an income floor and a purpose, council area or country filter. Every returned record then has a contact email plus the trustee board to address it to.

**Is this an official Charity Commission tool?**
No. This actor is independent and has no affiliation with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. It reads only information published on the public register, which is available under the Open Government Licence.

# Actor input Schema

## `searchTerm` (type: `string`):

Free-text search across the register — charity name, number, area of operation, classification and charitable objects. Leave empty to sweep every charity that matches the filters below. Several words are matched as 'any word', so 'cancer support' returns charities mentioning either.

## `searchIn` (type: `array`):

Narrow where the search term is matched. Leave empty to search everything (the register's default). Choosing 'Charity name' alone is the way to run a clean name search without objects and classifications dragging in unrelated charities.

## `charityNumbers` (type: `array`):

Optional. Look up exact registered charity numbers (for example '1089464'). When given, these are fetched directly and every search filter below is ignored.

## `status` (type: `string`):

Registered charities only, charities removed from the register (dissolved, merged or ceased), or both. Removed charities carry the removal date and reason.

## `incomeMin` (type: `integer`):

Only charities whose latest reported gross income is at least this. Use it to skip dormant micro-charities — for example 100000 for charities with real budgets.

## `incomeMax` (type: `integer`):

Only charities whose latest reported gross income is at most this.

## `expenditureMin` (type: `integer`):

Only charities whose latest reported total expenditure is at least this.

## `expenditureMax` (type: `integer`):

Only charities whose latest reported total expenditure is at most this.

## `localAuthorities` (type: `array`):

Council areas the charity works in, for example 'Camden', 'Birmingham City', 'Cardiff'. London boroughs and Welsh councils are routed automatically. Combine with an income filter to build a local funding or partnership list.

## `operatesNationally` (type: `array`):

Charities that declare they work across a whole nation rather than one council area.

## `countriesOfOperation` (type: `array`):

Overseas countries the charity works in, for example 'Kenya', 'Ukraine', 'India'. The register records these per charity, so this isolates charities operating in a given country.

## `whatCharityDoes` (type: `array`):

The register's own purpose classification.

## `whoCharityHelps` (type: `array`):

The beneficiary group the charity declares.

## `howCharityHelps` (type: `array`):

How the charity delivers its purposes — grant makers, service providers, research funders and so on.

## `grantMakersOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Only charities whose main way of carrying out their purposes is grant making — the funder list, straight from the register.

## `employeeBenefitBands` (type: `array`):

Only charities reporting at least one employee in the chosen total-benefits band. A quick filter for charities big enough to employ senior paid staff.

## `registeredFrom` (type: `string`):

Earliest registration date, DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD. Newly registered charities are the freshest leads on the register.

## `registeredTo` (type: `string`):

Latest registration date, DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD.

## `removedFrom` (type: `string`):

Earliest removal date, DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD. Only applies when removed charities are included.

## `removedTo` (type: `string`):

Latest removal date, DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD.

## `documentsOverdueOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Only charities whose annual return or accounts are overdue — the compliance-risk slice of the register.

## `includeLinkedCharities` (type: `boolean`):

Include subsidiary charities linked to a main registration (for example endowment funds run under a parent charity's number).

## `withEmailOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Skip charities that publish no email address. Records without an email are never returned or charged for.

## `withPhoneOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Skip charities that publish no phone number.

## `withWebsiteOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Skip charities that publish no website.

## `fullDetails` (type: `boolean`):

On (recommended): every field — contacts, trustees, finances, accounts, governance. Off: only the result-list summary (name, number, status, headline income), which is much faster for very large sweeps.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

How many charity records to return. Searches returning more than 10,000 matches are split into registration-date windows automatically so large pulls stay complete.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Optional. The register is reachable without a proxy; use one only if your account requires it.

The hosted server signs you in with OAuth on first connect, so no API token belongs in this config. Clients without OAuth support can send an `Authorization: Bearer <APIFY_API_TOKEN>` header instead, using a token from API & Integrations in Apify Console (https://console.apify.com/settings/integrations).
