## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

### What you get

Search by firm name or keyword, by Firm Reference Number (FRN), by individual name or by Individual Reference Number (IRN). For every match you get a flat, spreadsheet-ready record:

- **Identity & status**: FRN, firm name, regulatory status (Authorised, EEA Authorised, Registered, Cancelled, No longer authorised), sub status, status effective date, business type, Companies House number, mutual society number.
- **Compliance flags**: Money Laundering Regulations status, client money permission, PSD agent status, E-Money agent status.
- **Contact**: full address (lines, town, county, postcode, country), phone number and website.
- **Regulated permissions**: the firm's regulated activities and permissions, with a count.
- **Approved individuals**: name, Individual Reference Number (IRN) and status for each person approved at the firm, with a count.
- **Trading names**: current and previous names the firm trades under.
- **Appointed representatives**: current and previous ARs / IARs.
- **Individual records**: full name, IRN, status, current firm and controlled functions when you search people directly.

### Why this one

- **Pay per result only. No result, no charge.** No per-run startup fee and no charge for empty or failed runs. Compare with tools that bill a fixed startup fee plus a per-firm fee on top.
- **Full surface in one run.** Permissions, approved individuals and appointed representatives are on by default, not locked-off add-ons.
- **More filters**: firm name, FRN, individual name, IRN, status and business type.
- **Clean flat fields** ready for CSV and Excel, deduplicated, with a live progress indicator.

### Who is it for

| Use case | Who benefits |
|---|---|
| KYB / AML / onboarding | Compliance teams verifying a UK firm's authorisation and permissions |
| Due diligence | Analysts checking status history, individuals and appointed representatives |
| Lead research | Sales teams building lists of authorised firms by type, area or activity |
| Monitoring | RegTech builders feeding firm status and permissions into their own apps |

### How to use it

1. Get a **free** FCA Register developer key: register on the FCA developer portal, confirm your email and copy your email + API key.
2. Paste them into the **FCA Developer Email** and **FCA Developer API Key** fields (they are stored as secrets), or set the `FCA_EMAIL` and `FCA_API_KEY` environment variables.
3. Add one or more **firm names**, **FRNs**, **individual names** or **IRNs**. Optionally set a **status** or **business type** filter.
4. Set **Max Firms** / **Max Individuals** and run. Export as JSON, CSV or Excel, or pull it through the Apify API.

### Frequently Asked Questions

**Do I need an API key?**
Yes, a free one. The FCA issues developer credentials (an email + key) at no cost. You supply your own so your quota is entirely yours. If no key is provided the run stops immediately with a clear message and you are not charged.

**What does a Firm Reference Number (FRN) mean?**
It is the unique number the FCA assigns to each regulated firm. If you already have FRNs, put them in the FRNs field for exact, fast lookups; otherwise search by name.

**Can I look up people, not just firms?**
Yes. Use Individual Names or IRNs to return approved individuals with their status, current firm and controlled functions.

**Do you charge for empty runs?**
No. You are only charged per validated record returned. A search that matches nothing, or a run with missing credentials, costs nothing.

**How fresh is the data?**
Every record is read live at run time, so it reflects the Register at the moment of the run (see observedAt).

### Export, API and AI agents (x402 + MCP)

Export the scraped data to **JSON, CSV or Excel**, pull it as a **dataset** through the Apify **API**, or wire it into your app with **no code**. This web scraper and data extractor also works for bulk data extraction and scheduled runs.

For AI agents: this Actor is available on **x402**, Apify's agentic payment standard built with Coinbase. An AI agent can discover, pay for and run it on its own with a funded wallet and a single HTTP request: no account, no subscription and no human in the loop. It also runs as an **MCP** tool inside Claude, Cursor and other AI clients out of the box. Learn more about [x402 agentic payments on Apify](https://docs.apify.com/platform/integrations/x402).
