## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## Canada Business Registry Scraper - Companies & Leads

Search **Canada's official business registries** in one run and get clean rows for every company:
**legal name**, **registry**, **status**, **business number (BN)**, **corporation number**, **entity
type**, **city**, **province** and **incorporation date**. One search covers **eight registries** -
federal **Corporations Canada** plus **Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia**. Built on the official government API - no key, no browser, no proxy.

### What you get per company

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `name` / `alternateName` | Legal name and registered alternate name |
| `registrySource` / `registryName` / `jurisdiction` | Which registry the record comes from |
| `businessNumber` | CRA business number (BN) where the registry publishes it |
| `registryEntityId` / `alternateId` | Corporation / entity number in that registry |
| `entityType` / `mrasEntityType` | Business corporation, sole proprietorship, partnership... |
| `status` / `statusDate` / `statusNotes` | Active or Inactive, with the date |
| `incorporationDate` | Date incorporated / registered |
| `city` / `province` / `country` | Registered-office location |
| `homeJurisdictionName` / `homeJurisdictionRegistry` | Home jurisdiction for extra-provincial registrations |
| `registryUrl` | Direct Corporations Canada profile link for federal records |

### Input

```json
{ "searchQueries": ["Shopify", "plumbing"], "registrySources": ["CC", "ON"], "statuses": ["Active"] }
```

- **Search queries** - company names, keywords, or business/corporation numbers, one per line.
- **Import from a file** - paste a list, or link a public `.txt`/`.csv`, a Google Sheet/Drive link, or an
  Apify key-value-store record.
- **Registries** - limit to any of the eight participating registries. **Statuses** - Active / Inactive.
- **Max companies** bound the run. **Output fields** trim every record to the columns you need.

Leave everything empty and the run returns a small free sample so you can see the shape first.

### Reliability

Reads the official [Canada's Business Registries](https://ised-isde.canada.ca/cbr/srch/) federated
search API - public, keyless, no anti-bot. Searches that return nothing bill **$0**, and rows dropped by
your registry/status filters are never charged.

### Honest limits

- **Coverage is the 8 participating registries** (federal CC + ON, QC, BC, AB, MB, SK, NS - measured
  live). New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland and the territories do not publish into the federated search.
- **`businessNumber` appears only where the source registry publishes it** - federal records carry it
  consistently; some provincial records omit it. It reflects the registry's own data, not a scraping gap.
- **Registry-office address granularity varies by registry** - city/province are the reliable fields.
- **No director names or filing documents** - the federated search returns the registry index record;
  use the `registryUrl` for the full federal corporation profile.

### Pricing

**$0.002 per company** on the FREE tier (tiered pricing lowers it with volume). Only companies actually
saved are billed; empty searches and filtered-out rows cost nothing.

### Output views

- **Companies** - name, status, registry, entity type, city, province, business number, incorporation date.

### Use with AI assistants (MCP)

Available through the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/platform/integrations/mcp) - an agent can
verify a Canadian counterparty's registration, find every province a brand is registered in, or pull a
lead list for a keyword in one call.

### Agent-ready: autonomous payments (x402 & Skyfire)

This actor is **agent-ready** - AI agents can discover it, run it, and **pay for it autonomously**, with no Apify account and no human in the loop. It uses [pay-per-event](https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors/publishing/monetize/pay-per-event) pricing and [limited permissions](https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors/development/permissions), so it qualifies for Apify's agentic-payment standards:

- **[x402](https://docs.apify.com/platform/integrations/x402)** - an open, HTTP-native payment protocol. Agents pay per run in USDC on the Base network directly through the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/platform/integrations/mcp) - no account, no API key.
- **[Skyfire](https://docs.apify.com/platform/integrations/skyfire)** - agent-to-service payments for fully autonomous AI-agent workflows.

Building an AI agent, MCP tool, or autonomous data pipeline? This scraper is ready to plug in and pay as it goes.

# Actor input Schema

## `searchQueries` (type: `array`):

Company names, keywords or business/corporation numbers to search across Canada's business registries, one per line - e.g. <code>Shopify</code>, <code>plumbing</code>, <code>847871746</code>. <b>Leave empty and the run returns a small free sample.</b>

## `searchQueriesFromFile` (type: `string`):

Bulk-load search queries. Either <b>paste the whole list</b> (one per line), or give <b>a single link</b> to a public <code>.txt</code>/<code>.csv</code>, a Google Sheet/Drive link, or an Apify key-value-store record. A file that cannot be read says so and charges nothing.

## `registrySources` (type: `array`):

Keep only records from the selected registries. Leave empty for all eight participating registries.

## `statuses` (type: `array`):

Keep only companies in the selected registration status. Leave empty for both.

## `maxItemsPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

How many companies to collect for each search query.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Overall cap across all queries. You are only charged for companies actually saved.

## `outputFields` (type: `array`):

Pick the fields you want and every record is trimmed to exactly those - handy for lean CSV/Sheets exports.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "searchQueries": [
    "Shopify"
  ],
  "maxItemsPerQuery": 100,
  "maxItems": 1000
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

Each scraped record - a Canadian company's registry data - as a JSON item in the default dataset.
