## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Wikipedia Brand Mention Finder

Find every Wikipedia article that mentions your brand, product, company or project, in any language edition, and see which of those articles link to your website and which don't. Each mention comes with the sentence where your name appears and how many people read the article in the last 30 days.

- **linked**: the article has at least one external link to your domain or one of its subdomains
- **unlinked**: the article mentions you but does not link to your domain
- **not-checked**: no domain was given, so links were not checked

### Why use it

Wikipedia is read by millions of people and is a source for search engines and AI assistants. This Actor shows what Wikipedia says about you, where, and to how many readers:

- **Brand monitoring and PR**: see every article that names your company or product, with the exact snippet, so you can spot outdated or wrong statements.
- **Competitor research**: run it on a competitor's name to see where they are cited and you are not.
- **Unlinked mentions**: find articles that mention you without a link, sorted by readership.

A note on Wikipedia's rules: Wikipedia's [conflict of interest guideline](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest) asks people not to add links to their own site or edit articles about their own company. If an article is wrong or would benefit from a source you publish, suggest the change on the article's talk page and let independent editors decide. This Actor only reads Wikipedia; it never edits it.

### Input

- **Brands or names**: one or more names, e.g. `Cloudflare`, `Raspberry Pi`. Each is searched as an exact phrase. A name that is also a common word (`Apple`, `Notion`) matches many unrelated articles; use a longer form or turn off **Exact phrase** and use Wikipedia search operators such as `"Notion" software -concept`.
- **Your website domain** (optional): e.g. `cloudflare.com`. `www.` is folded in, and links to any subdomain (`blog.cloudflare.com`) count as links to you.
- **Wikipedia languages**: language codes such as `en`, `de`, `fr`, `ja`, or Wikimedia hosts such as `en.wikivoyage.org`. Default: `en`.
- **Max articles per brand and wiki** (default 100): the top matches by Wikipedia's search relevance. Wikipedia's search returns at most 10,000.
- **Only return articles that don't link to you** (default off).
- **Include 30-day pageviews** (default on).

```json
{ "brands": ["Cloudflare"], "domain": "cloudflare.com", "wikis": ["en", "de"], "maxArticlesPerBrand": 200 }
```

### Output

One dataset row per brand and article:

```json
{
  "brand": "Cloudflare",
  "wiki": "en.wikipedia.org",
  "articleTitle": "Content delivery network",
  "articleUrl": "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_delivery_network",
  "pageId": 880860,
  "linkStatus": "unlinked",
  "domain": "cloudflare.com",
  "linksToDomain": 0,
  "domainLinks": [],
  "pageviews30d": 16288,
  "mentionSnippet": "optimization. Content delivery service providers include Akamai Technologies, Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront, Qwilt (Cisco), Fastly, CDN77, BunnyCDN, EdgeNext,",
  "wordCount": 4623,
  "lastEdited": "2026-10-30T16:31:18Z",
  "searchRank": 25,
  "searchQuery": "\"Cloudflare\"",
  "checkedAt": "2026-10-30T19:18:48.264Z"
}
```

`domainLinks` lists up to 10 of the article's links to your domain; `linksToDomain` is the full count. `pageviews30d` is the sum of daily views over the last 30 days (all devices, human readers only), or `null` when Wikimedia has no data yet. The numbers in the example are from a real run and will change.

Key-value store records:

- **UNLINKED_MENTIONS**: brand, article URL and 30-day pageviews of every unlinked mention, tab-separated, one per line (only when a domain is given).
- **OUTPUT**: per brand and wiki, the total number of matching articles on Wikipedia, how many were returned, and how many link to you.

### How it works

1. It calls Wikipedia's official search API (`list=search`) on each wiki for each name, in the main article namespace only, and keeps Wikipedia's relevance order and the highlighted snippet.
2. For the matching articles, 50 at a time, it asks the MediaWiki API for external links to your domain (`prop=extlinks`) and for 30-day pageviews (`prop=pageviews`).
3. Requests are sequential, identify the Actor in the User-Agent as `WikipediaBrandMentionFinder/1.0` and use `maxlag`, following Wikimedia's API etiquette. Your website is never contacted.

### Data collected

Only public article data from Wikipedia: titles, page IDs, URLs, search snippets, word counts, last-edit times, external links to your domain and aggregate pageview counts. User pages, talk pages and editor names are not read.

### Pricing

Pay per event: each article returned for a brand is one `mention-found` event. Use **Max articles per brand and wiki**, **Only return articles that don't link to you** and the run's maximum cost setting to cap spend. The run stops cleanly when the cap is reached.

### Limitations

- The search matches article text as Wikipedia indexes it, including text that comes from templates and infoboxes. A match in a reference title or a table counts as a mention.
- "Linked" means a link to your domain anywhere in the article, including in citations. Links added at render time by Lua modules or Wikidata are not listed by the API, so a few articles may show as unlinked even though the rendered page has a link (often the official-website link in an infobox).
- Search results change as articles are edited and the search index is updated, usually within minutes.
- If the Wikimedia API is down for one wiki, OUTPUT shows an error for that wiki and the other wikis still run.

### Support

Open an issue on the Actor's Issues tab. Breakages are fixed within 48 hours. See also our [Backlink Finder for Wikipedia](https://apify.com/sculptural_delphinium/wikipedia-backlink-finder), which lists every Wikipedia link to your domain and checks whether each linked page still works.

# Actor input Schema

## `brands` (type: `array`):

Brand, product, company or project names to look for, for example "Cloudflare" or "Raspberry Pi". Each is searched as an exact phrase. Distinctive names give the cleanest results.

## `domain` (type: `string`):

Optional. Your domain, for example "cloudflare.com". Each article is marked "linked" if it has at least one external link to this domain or a subdomain of it, otherwise "unlinked". Leave empty to only list mentions.

## `wikis` (type: `array`):

Language codes (en, de, fr, es, ja...) or Wikimedia hosts such as en.wikivoyage.org. Every brand is searched on every wiki. Default: en.

## `maxArticlesPerBrand` (type: `integer`):

How many of the top matching articles to return for each brand on each wiki. Wikipedia's search returns at most 10,000.

## `onlyUnlinked` (type: `boolean`):

Return (and charge for) unlinked mentions only. Needs a domain.

## `exactPhrase` (type: `boolean`):

Wrap each name in quotes so only the exact phrase matches. Turn off to pass names to Wikipedia's search as written, for example to use operators like -word or intitle:. Names that already contain quotes or operators are always passed as written.

## `includePageviews` (type: `boolean`):

Add the number of views each article had in the last 30 days, from Wikimedia's pageview statistics.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "brands": [
    "Cloudflare"
  ],
  "domain": "cloudflare.com",
  "wikis": [
    "en"
  ],
  "maxArticlesPerBrand": 100,
  "onlyUnlinked": false,
  "exactPhrase": true,
  "includePageviews": true
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

One row per brand and article: the mention snippet, whether the article links to your domain, and 30-day pageviews.

## `unlinkedMentions` (type: `string`):

Brand, article URL and 30-day pageviews, tab-separated, one per line. Only written when a domain is given.

## `summary` (type: `string`):

Total matches, rows returned and linked/unlinked counts per brand and wiki, stored in the OUTPUT record.
