## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Crossref DOI Lookup & Scholarly Paper Search

Resolve **DOIs in bulk** or **search 180M+ scholarly works** (journal articles, books, chapters, proceedings, preprints, datasets) via the official **Crossref REST API**. No scraping, key, login or proxy.

### Use cases

- **Reference cleanup**: turn a list of DOIs into full citations (authors, journal, volume, pages, year).
- **Literature reviews & research ops**: search by title/keywords, author or affiliation, filter by date, type or journal, sort by citation count.
- **Publisher / journal monitoring**: list a journal's newest works by ISSN.
- **Retraction checks**: `isRetractedOrUpdated` flags works with Crossref update notices (retractions, corrections).
- **Bibliometrics & sales intel**: citation counts, funders, ORCIDs and affiliations.

### Input

```json
{ "dois": ["10.1038/nature14539"], "queries": ["CRISPR base editing"], "fromPubDate": "2023", "sort": "is-referenced-by-count", "maxPerQuery": 50 }
```

### Output (one row per work)

`doi, title, authors, authorOrcids, containerTitle, publisher, published, volume, issue, page, issn, citedByCount, referenceCount, funders, licenses, isRetractedOrUpdated, updates, url`. Unknown DOIs / empty searches return `found: false` and are not charged.

Tip: `sort: relevance` (default) gives the best matches. Sorting by citation count or date ranks every loosely matching work, so use specific queries or filters with it.

Abstracts are intentionally not exported (they remain the copyright of publishers/authors); `hasAbstract` tells you whether one exists.

### Pricing

Pay per result (per work returned).

### Notes

Bibliographic metadata from Crossref, which states it is reusable without restriction (facts / CC0). Not affiliated with Crossref.

# Actor input Schema

## `dois` (type: `array`):

Bulk lookup. Accepts 10.xxxx/..., doi: or https://doi.org/ forms.

## `queries` (type: `array`):

Bibliographic search (title, keywords, citation strings).

## `authors` (type: `array`):

e.g. Jennifer Doudna.

## `affiliations` (type: `array`):

e.g. Stanford University.

## `fromPubDate` (type: `string`):

Published from (YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD).

## `untilPubDate` (type: `string`):

Published until (YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD).

## `type` (type: `string`):

Optional filter.

## `issn` (type: `string`):

Optional, e.g. 0028-0836. Alone it lists a journal's works.

## `sort` (type: `string`):

Sort.

## `hasFullText` (type: `boolean`):

Only works with full-text links.

## `contactEmail` (type: `string`):

Sent to Crossref as mailto for its polite pool. Leave empty to use a generic address.

## `maxPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

Max works per query.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Max results.

  "maxItems": 1000
}
```
# Actor output Schema
## `results` (type: `string`):
All results in the default dataset (Overview view selected).
# API
You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.
## JavaScript example
```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';

// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});

// Prepare Actor input
const input = {

        "10.1038/nature14539"
    ],
    "queries": [
        "CRISPR base editing"
    ]
};

// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("se7enmethod/crossref-doi-paper-search").call(input);

// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
