## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## EU VAT Number Validator (VIES) – Bulk VAT Check API

Check **EU VAT numbers** (NIF-IVA, USt-IdNr, TVA intracommunautaire…) against the **official EU VIES** service in bulk. One JSON row per number: **valid / invalid**, plus **company name and address** where the member state shares them. Spaces, dots and dashes are cleaned automatically; Greek `GR` is mapped to `EL`.

### Sample output (real run of the default input, 13 s)

| vatNumber | countryCode | valid | name | address |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IE6388047V | IE | true | GOOGLE IRELAND LIMITED | 3RD FLOOR, GORDON HOUSE, BARROW STREET, DUBLIN 4 |
| FR40303265045 | FR | true | SA SODIMAS | 11 RUE AMPERE, 26600 PONT DE L ISERE |
| DE129273398 | DE | true |  |  |

<details><summary>One full JSON row</summary>

```json
{
  "input": "IE6388047V",
  "vatNumber": "IE6388047V",
  "countryCode": "IE",
  "valid": true,
  "name": "GOOGLE IRELAND LIMITED",
  "address": "3RD FLOOR, GORDON HOUSE, BARROW STREET, DUBLIN 4",
  "checkedAt": "2026-10-17T18:10:44.285Z",
  "source": "EU VIES"
}
```

</details>

### Input example

```json
{
  "vatNumbers": [
    "DE129273398",
    "IE6388047V",
    "ESA28015865"
  ]
}
```

### Output example

```json
{"input":"DE129273398","vatNumber":"DE129273398","countryCode":"DE","valid":true,"name":null,"address":null,"checkedAt":"2026-10-14T07:18:05.901Z","source":"EU VIES"}
```

Germany and some other states never return name/address. If VIES or a national service is down, the number is skipped and **not charged**. Badly formatted numbers are not charged.

### Use from an AI agent (API or MCP)

Add `https://mcp.apify.com?tools=sefran1/eu-vat-number-validator` to Claude, Cursor, VS Code or any MCP client and the Actor becomes the tool `sefran1--eu-vat-number-validator`. Or call the API:

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/sefran1~eu-vat-number-validator/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=$APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -d '{"vatNumber":"ESB12345678"}'
```

Schedule it daily in Apify (Schedules) and send new results to Google Sheets, Slack, Make, Zapier or a webhook.

### Pricing

Pay per result: **$0.004 per VAT number checked** ($4 per 1,000). No subscription. Runs that find nothing cost only the tiny start fee.

### Data source and legal note

Data: EU VIES VAT number validation REST service (European Commission, DG TAXUD). This Actor only reads official public open data through the publisher's own API or feed, at a polite rate. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the publisher. Check the original source before relying on any result.
