## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

## OpenStreetMap Places Scraper — Pay Per Result

Extract **places (POIs) from OpenStreetMap** by category and area: cafes, restaurants, shops, hotels, pharmacies, EV charging stations — any of 1,000+ OSM tags. Get names, addresses, phone numbers, websites, opening hours, and coordinates. Built on the Overpass API — **fully legal open data**, fast HTTP, no browser, no anti-bot wars.

**Use cases:** location datasets for apps, lead generation by area, site-selection analysis, competitor mapping, cheap bulk alternative to Google Maps scrapers.

### What you get

Each dataset item is one place with a stable schema:

`osmId, osmType, name, category, lat, lon, street, houseNumber, city, postcode, country, phone, website, openingHours, tags, osmUrl, scrapedAt`

The full OSM tag map is included, so niche attributes (cuisine, wheelchair access, brand, ...) are never lost.

### Pricing

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Place delivered | **$0.50 per 1,000** |
| Actor start | $0.00005 per GB-start |

Compare: Google Maps scrapers typically charge **$4–9 per 1,000 places**. For bulk POI data, OSM covers most business categories at a fraction of the cost — 100% legal.

Empty result sets are **not charged**.

### Limitations (honest)

- Data quality follows OpenStreetMap coverage: excellent in Europe and cities worldwide, thinner in rural areas of some countries. Phone/website fields exist only where mapped.
- No reviews, ratings, or photos (that data belongs to proprietary platforms).
- Very large areas with common categories are capped by the `maxItems` setting — split the area for exhaustive pulls.

### How to use

1. Pick categories as OSM tags (`amenity=cafe`, `shop=supermarket`, `tourism=hotel`, ...). See the [OSM tag reference](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_features).
2. Set a place name ("Berlin", "Texas") or an explicit bounding box.
3. Run — places stream into the dataset. Export JSON/CSV or fetch via [Apify API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2).

# Actor input Schema

## `categories` (type: `array`):

OSM tag filters like amenity=cafe, shop=supermarket, tourism=hotel, amenity=charging\_station. A bare word (e.g. "cafe") is treated as amenity=<word>.

## `placeName` (type: `string`):

City, region, or country to search in (geocoded automatically). Ignored if a bounding box is set.

## `boundingBox` (type: `string`):

Optional explicit area, e.g. "52.4,13.2,52.6,13.6". Overrides placeName.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Cap on places delivered.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "categories": [
    "amenity=cafe"
  ],
  "placeName": "Berlin",
  "maxItems": 200
}
