## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## WHOIS & Domain Lookup API: DNS, SSL & Availability

Paste a list of domains and get, for each one: **is it available or taken, who the registrar is, when it was created and when it expires**, its **nameservers and DNS records**, its **email provider** (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365...), **SPF and DMARC**, and its **SSL certificate** (valid or not, issuer, days until it expires).

Thousands of domains per run, from official sources: **RDAP** (the modern WHOIS run by the registries), port-43 WHOIS where a registry has no RDAP, public DNS and a direct TLS check. No API key, pay per domain.

### Why this one?

- **Four tools in one.** WHOIS lookup, domain availability checker, DNS lookup and SSL checker in a single row per domain.
- **Expiry radar.** `daysToExpiry` and `sslDaysToExpiry` show at a glance which domains and certificates are about to lapse.
- **Email provider and email security.** MX, SPF and DMARC records, and whether the company uses Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho...
- **Name ideas in bulk.** Turn on **Only available domains** and you pay only for the names you can register.
- **Accepts anything.** Plain domains, subdomains or full website links: the registrable domain is found for you.

### Use cases

- **Domain portfolio and IT teams:** monitor expiry dates of domains and SSL certificates, schedule it weekly.
- **Domain investors and founders:** check hundreds of name ideas for availability at once.
- **Sales and lead enrichment:** company age, email provider and security setup for every lead's domain.
- **Security and compliance:** spot expired certificates, missing DMARC and registrar abuse contacts.
- **SEO:** domain age and registration history of competitors and link prospects.

### Input

| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Domains** | Domains or links, one per line. Thousands are fine. |
| **DNS and email provider** | A, AAAA, MX, TXT, SPF, DMARC and the email provider. On by default. |
| **SSL certificate** | Validity, issuer and expiry of the HTTPS certificate. On by default. |
| **Only available domains** | Save (and pay for) only the domains that are free to register. |

```json
{
  "domains": ["python.org", "https://www.lemonde.fr", "my-new-startup-idea.com"],
  "checkDns": true,
  "checkSsl": true
}
```

### Output

One row per domain:

```json
{
  "domain": "python.org",
  "registrableDomain": "python.org",
  "registered": true,
  "available": false,
  "registrar": "Gandi SAS",
  "registrarIanaId": "81",
  "createdAt": "1995-03-27T05:00:00Z",
  "updatedAt": "2024-02-15T10:00:00Z",
  "expiresAt": "2033-03-28T05:00:00Z",
  "daysToExpiry": 2344,
  "domainAgeYears": 31.6,
  "statuses": ["client transfer prohibited"],
  "nameservers": ["ns-1134.awsdns-13.org", "ns-2046.awsdns-63.co.uk"],
  "dnssec": false,
  "registrantOrganization": null,
  "registrantCountry": null,
  "abuseEmail": "abuse@support.gandi.net",
  "whoisSource": "rdap",
  "emailProvider": "Other",
  "mx": ["mail.python.org"],
  "spf": "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ...",
  "dmarc": "v=DMARC1; p=reject; ...",
  "a": ["151.101.128.223"],
  "sslValid": true,
  "sslIssuer": "GlobalSign nv-sa",
  "sslExpiresAt": "2027-02-14T13:03:45Z",
  "sslDaysToExpiry": 111,
  "checkedAt": "2026-10-26T10:30:00Z"
}
```

`available` is `true` when the registry says nobody holds the name, `false` when it's registered, and `null` when the registry doesn't give a clear public answer.

### Good to know

- Most registries hide owner names and emails since GDPR, so `registrantOrganization` is usually empty. Registrar, dates, status and nameservers are always public.
- Some country domains publish little or nothing: **.es** has no public WHOIS (taken domains are still detected from DNS), and **.de** shows no dates. Generic domains (.com, .net, .org, .io, .app, .dev...) and most others are complete.
- Availability means the name isn't registered; premium or reserved names may still cost more at your registrar.

### Integrations

Schedule it weekly and send domains or certificates close to expiry to Slack, email or Google Sheets with Apify integrations, Zapier, Make or n8n.

### How to use it

1. Click **Try for free** (or **Start**) at the top of this page.
2. Fill in the input, or keep the example to see it working in seconds.
3. Click **Start** and wait for the run to finish.
4. Download the results as **Excel, CSV, JSON or HTML**, or get them through the Apify API.

### How much does it cost?

**$0.0015 per domain** ($1.50 per 1,000). No start fee, no monthly fee, and you only pay for the results saved to your dataset.

| Example | Cost |
|---|---|
| Check 100 name ideas | about $0.15 |
| Monitor a 2,000-domain portfolio weekly for a month | about $12.00 |

Apify's free plan includes monthly credit, so you can try it for free.

### FAQ

**Is it a bulk WHOIS lookup?**

Yes. It reads RDAP, the modern WHOIS run by the registries, and port-43 WHOIS where needed, for thousands of domains per run.

**Can I check if domains are available?**

Yes. Each row says whether the domain is available, and "Only available domains" keeps (and bills) just the free ones.

**Does it show the owner of a domain?**

Only when the registry publishes it. Since GDPR most registries hide owner names and emails; registrar, dates and nameservers are always public.

**Can I monitor SSL certificate expiry?**

Yes. sslDaysToExpiry shows how many days each certificate has left. Schedule it weekly to get warned in time.
