## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Federal Register Documents Watch

Monitor **new or updated Federal Register documents** (final rules, proposed rules, notices, and more) using the official [Federal Register REST API](https://www.federalregister.gov/reader-aids/developer-resources/rest-api) (no API key). Each scheduled run returns documents that are **new or changed** since the previous run, filtered by document type, agency, CFR part, search term, and keywords. State is stored in the named key-value store `federal-register-watch-state`.

### Input example

```json
{
  "documentTypes": ["RULE", "PRORULE", "NOTICE"],
  "agencySlugs": ["environmental-protection-agency"],
  "searchTerm": "",
  "cfrTitle": 40,
  "cfrPart": 0,
  "keywords": ["greenhouse"],
  "publishedWithinDays": 14,
  "maxResults": 50,
  "emitAll": false
}
```

Agency slugs match URLs on [federalregister.gov/agencies](https://www.federalregister.gov/agencies) (e.g. `food-and-drug-administration`).

### Output example

```json
{
  "documentNumber": "2026-20553",
  "title": "Air Plan Approval; Texas; Reasonably Available Control Technology for the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria Ozone Nonattainment Area",
  "documentType": "Rule",
  "publicationDate": "2026-10-07",
  "effectiveDate": "2026-11-07",
  "agencies": ["Environmental Protection Agency"],
  "cfrReferences": "40 CFR 52",
  "significant": true,
  "abstract": null,
  "htmlUrl": "https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/10/07/2026-20553/...",
  "pdfUrl": "https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2026-10-07/pdf/...",
  "changeType": "new"
}
```

### Sample run vs. monitoring

| Mode | `emitAll` | What you get |
|------|-----------|--------------|
| **Sample / first look** | `true` | Up to `maxResults` matching documents so you can inspect the feed. |
| **Scheduled monitoring** | `false` | Only documents that are **new** or **updated** since the last successful run. |

### Pricing

**$4.00 per 1,000 results** plus **$0.003 per Actor start** (Apify pay-per-event). You are charged once per document written to the dataset.

### Data source

All data comes from `federalregister.gov` public API responses. No scraping of third-party sites and no personal data.

# Actor input Schema

## `documentTypes` (type: `array`):

Federal Register document types to include. Empty = all types in the publication window.

## `agencySlugs` (type: `array`):

Agency URL slugs from federalregister.gov (e.g. environmental-protection-agency, food-and-drug-administration). Empty = any agency.

## `searchTerm` (type: `string`):

Official Federal Register API term search. Leave empty to rely on type/agency/CFR filters only.

## `cfrTitle` (type: `integer`):

Filter to documents affecting this Code of Federal Regulations title (0 = any).

## `cfrPart` (type: `integer`):

Filter to documents affecting this CFR part (requires cfrTitle when set; 0 = any part).

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

Additional client-side filter: document title or abstract must contain any of these (case-insensitive).

## `publishedWithinDays` (type: `integer`):

Only query documents published within this many days (UTC).

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Stop after pushing this many documents (0 = unlimited).

## `emitAll` (type: `boolean`):

If true, push every document matching filters (changeType new, updated, or unchanged). If false, only new or updated since the last run. Prefill enables a sample on first run.
