## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## RSS Feed Reader & Scraper - RSS/Atom to JSON, Only New Items

Read **RSS 2.0, Atom and RSS 1.0 (RDF)** feeds in bulk and get clean, consistent JSON: `title`, `link`, `publishedAt`/`updatedAt` (ISO 8601, UTC), plain-text `summary`, `categories`, podcast `enclosure` (audio URL, type, size) and `durationItunes`, plus the feed's title and link.

**$0.00055 per item delivered** (1,000 items = $0.55), no start fee. Feeds that fail, are not feeds or are disallowed by robots.txt are **free**.

### Quick start: example input, output and cost

Bulk RSS/Atom/RDF to JSON with feed autodiscovery, only-new-items monitoring, podcast enclosures and ISO dates. $0.55 per 1,000 items, failed feeds free.

**Example input**

```json
{
  "feeds": [
    "https://www.nasa.gov/feed/",
    "https://blog.apify.com/rss/"
  ]
}
```

**Cost example:** 50 feeds with 20 items each = 1,000 items x $0.00055 = **$0.55**.

### Highlights

- **Give it a website, it finds the feed** (`<link rel="alternate">` autodiscovery).
- **Only new items** (`onlyNewItems` or `monitorName`): schedule the actor hourly or daily and receive, and pay for, only items you have not seen yet. Ideal for Slack/email/Sheets alerts via Apify integrations.
- `sinceDate` filter, `maxItemsPerFeed`, dates normalised to ISO UTC whatever the feed uses.
- Safe XML parsing (protection against XML bombs and external entities).

### Input

`feeds` (required), `maxItemsPerFeed` (default 50), `sinceDate`, `onlyNewItems`, `monitorName`, `includeSummary`.

### Output (one item per feed entry)

`feedUrl, feedTitle, feedLink, feedFormat, title, link, guid, itemKey, publishedAt, updatedAt, summary, categories[], enclosure{url,type,length}, durationItunes, fetchedAt`

Failed feeds and reasons are in **ERRORS**; totals in **SUMMARY**.

### Use it in n8n, Make or Zapier (no code)

This actor works with Apify's official integrations, so you can send results to Google Sheets, Slack, Notion, a CRM or any of thousands of other apps.

**n8n**: [n8n.io](https://n8n.io)

1. In the Nodes panel, search **Apify** and install the verified node. Add your Apify API token.
2. Choose **Actors > Run actor and get dataset**, Actor source **Apify Store**, Actor URL `https://apify.com/sophisticated_occasion/rss-atom-feed-reader`.
3. Paste the input below into **Input JSON**. Each result item becomes an n8n item.

**Make**: [make.com](https://www.make.com/en/register)

1. Add the **Apify > Run an Actor** module, select this actor, turn on *Run synchronously*.
2. Add **Apify > Get Dataset Items** and map the `defaultDatasetId` from step 1.
3. Connect any app (Google Sheets > Add a Row, Slack > Create a Message, ...).

**Zapier:** use the **Apify** app, action **Run Actor** (pick this actor, paste the input), then **Fetch Dataset Items**.

**Example input**

```json
{
  "feeds": [
    "https://www.nasa.gov/feed/",
    "https://blog.apify.com/rss/"
  ],
  "maxItemsPerFeed": 50,
  "onlyNewItems": false,
  "includeSummary": true
}
```

**API (any language):** `POST https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/sophisticated_occasion~rss-atom-feed-reader/run-sync-get-dataset-items` with header `Authorization: Bearer <APIFY_TOKEN>` and the input above as the JSON body.

### Responsible use

Feeds are published by sites for automated reading. We still check each site's **robots.txt**, send at most about one request per second per site with an honest User-Agent (`FeedReader/1.0`), never log in and never bypass bot protection. Author names are not included in the output. Summaries are short excerpts; respect the publishers' copyright when you reuse content.

# Actor input Schema

## `feeds` (type: `array`):

RSS/Atom/RDF feed URLs, or website URLs (the feed is discovered from the page). Up to 1,000 per run.

## `maxItemsPerFeed` (type: `integer`):

Newest items first, as ordered by the feed.

## `sinceDate` (type: `string`):

Optional date (YYYY-MM-DD). Items without a date are skipped when this is set.

## `onlyNewItems` (type: `boolean`):

For scheduled monitoring: remembers delivered items in a named key-value store and returns only new ones. You pay only for new items.

## `monitorName` (type: `string`):

Use different names to keep separate 'seen items' lists (lowercase letters, digits, dashes). Setting it turns on 'only new items'.

## `includeSummary` (type: `boolean`):

Plain-text summary (HTML removed, max 1,000 characters).

## Actor input object example

  ],
  "maxItemsPerFeed": 50,
  "onlyNewItems": false,
  "includeSummary": true
}
```
# Actor output Schema
## `results` (type: `string`):
All result items (overview view)
## `errors` (type: `string`):
Inputs that could not be processed, with the reason
## `summary` (type: `string`):
Counts of processed, billed and failed items
