## Pricing

from $0.65 / 1,000 paper listeds

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.
Since this Actor supports Apify Store discounts, the price gets lower the higher subscription plan you have.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## arXiv Papers: search with abstracts, authors and categories

Papers from arXiv by search term, field, category and date order: title, abstract, authors, primary and other categories, published and updated dates, DOI, journal reference, comment, abstract page and PDF link, from the official arXiv API. Up to 50 searches a run. Pay per paper.

### Why this scraper

- **Only delivered results are charged.** Inputs that fail come back as clear error
  records at no cost.
- Straight from arXiv's own API at the pace arXiv asks for (one request every three seconds), no scraping of the site. Measured on the platform: 240 papers for two searches in 32 seconds for a thirtieth of a cent.
- One row per paper with the full abstract, every author, the primary and all other categories, first-submitted and last-updated dates, version number, DOI and journal reference when the authors added them, the authors' comment (venue, pages), the abstract page and the PDF link.
- The full arXiv query language is available: free text over all fields, or `ti:` (title), `au:` (author), `abs:` (abstract), `cat:` (category) with AND, OR and ANDNOT, so a search can be as broad or as precise as the question.
- Newest first by default, so a weekly run with a category and a term is a literature alert; relevance and last-updated ordering for surveys.

### Who this is for

Put search terms or arXiv queries in `queries` (up to 50 per run), optionally `category` (cs.AI, cs.CL, stat.ML, q-bio), `sortBy` and `maxPapersPerQuery` (default 50). Built for researchers and students keeping up with a field, ML teams tracking new methods and the papers behind models, analysts measuring research activity by topic, and anyone building a reading list or a corpus of abstracts.

### Who this is not for

Only metadata and abstracts are delivered; the PDF is linked, never downloaded, and full-text search is not what the arXiv API offers. Author names are as printed on the paper, with no affiliation or disambiguation. arXiv asks for one request every three seconds, so 500 papers take about half a minute and a run of many large searches takes minutes; the actor keeps that pace on purpose. Papers are not peer-reviewed; `journalRef` and `doi` appear only when the authors register a publication.

### Input fields

| Field | Type | Required or default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| `queries` | list of text | required | One search per row, up to 50: words in title and abstract (retrieval augmented generation), or an arXiv query such as au:Hinton AND cat:cs.LG, or ti:"graph neural". |
| `category` | text |  | Only papers in this arXiv category, for example cs.AI, cs.CL, stat.ML, q-bio. Empty means every category. |
| `sortBy` | text (submitted, updated, relevance) | submitted | submitted (newest first), updated (recently revised first) or relevance. |
| `maxPapersPerQuery` | number | 50 | Cost ceiling per search. arXiv asks for one request every three seconds, so 500 papers take about half a minute. |

### Input example

```json
{
    "queries": [
        "retrieval augmented generation",
        "cat:cs.CL AND ti:multilingual"
    ],
    "sortBy": "submitted",
    "maxPapersPerQuery": 50
}
```

### Output example

| Field | Type | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| `arxivId` | text | The arXiv identifier without version, for example 2609.30258, the key to the paper. |
| `version` | number | The version number of this revision (1 for the first submission). |
| `title` | text | The paper title, line breaks removed. |
| `abstract` | text | The abstract as submitted, line breaks removed. |
| `authors` | list | The author names in the order of the paper. |
| `primaryCategory` | text | The main arXiv category, for example cs.LG. |
| `categories` | list | Every category the paper is filed under, the primary one included. |
| `publishedAt` | text | When the first version was submitted. |
| `updatedAt` | text | When the latest version was submitted; equal to publishedAt for a first version. |
| `doi` | text | The DOI of the published version, when the authors registered one. |
| `journalRef` | text | The journal or conference reference, when the authors added one. |
| `comment` | text | The authors' comment, typically pages, figures or the venue. |
| `url` | text | The abstract page on arxiv.org. |
| `pdfUrl` | text | The PDF of this version on arxiv.org; the actor links it and does not download it. |
| `query` | text | The search term this row was found with. |

Error codes: `INVALID_QUERY`, `NO_RESULTS`, `BLOCKED`.

One delivered row looks like this:

```json
{
  "arxivId": "2609.16967",
  "version": 1,
  "title": "Target-Language Generation in Multilingual Models: Activation Steering and Optimal Control",
  "abstract": "Ensuring that multilingual language models generate coherent text in a specific target language is a major issue in multilingual language modeling. We develop an optimal control method for target-language text generation as well as a framework for evaluating the quality of generated text in terms of language adherence, linguistic coherence, and semantic coherence. We find that the proposed method performs at least as well as the prominent difference-in-means activation steering method for the majority of models tested, with substantially less hyperparameter tuning required.",
    "James A. Michaelov",
    "Carmen Amo Alonso",
    "Tyler A. Chang",
    "Roger P. Levy"
  ],
  "primaryCategory": "cs.CL",
    "cs.CL"
  ],
  "publishedAt": "2026-09-15T10:40:27Z",
  "updatedAt": "2026-09-15T10:40:27Z",
### Pricing
Pay per event: one `paper-listed` event per delivered result. No charge for inputs
that fail, no separate platform-usage surcharge.
**Free Apify plan:** this actor delivers up to 25 rows per run for accounts on the Apify free
plan, and then stops with a message. That limit is set by us, not by Apify. It exists so the
actor keeps paying for itself for the people who do pay. Any paid Apify plan runs it at full
size, billed per delivered row, with failed rows never charged.
**Reviews:** if this actor saves you time, a short review on this page is the one thing that
helps most. Ratings are what other buyers look at first, and we have no other way to ask.
### FAQ
**Is personal data collected?**
No. Author names are the bibliographic authors of a published paper, as on the paper itself; no profiles, emails or affiliations are read.
**How do I search by author?**
Use `au:` in the query: `au:Hinton`, or `au:Hinton AND cat:cs.LG` to keep one field. Names match as arXiv indexes them (surname, or surname\_initial).
**How do I get a weekly alert for a topic?**
Run weekly with `sortBy` submitted, a term or `cat:` query and `maxPapersPerQuery` around 100, and keep the rows whose `publishedAt` is after your last run.
**Why is the run slow?**
Because arXiv asks every client for one request every three seconds; the actor honours that so the source stays open. A page holds 100 papers, so 500 papers is five requests and about fifteen seconds of waiting.
**What is the difference between publishedAt and updatedAt?**
`publishedAt` is when version 1 was submitted; `updatedAt` is when the current version was. `version` says which revision the PDF link points to.
**What does a run cost when a search finds nothing?**
Nothing. `NO_RESULTS`, `INVALID_QUERY` and `BLOCKED` rows are free; only delivered papers are charged.
**What happens when the source changes?**
Sources change from time to time; that is the nature of this work. The actor is
monitored daily and fixed fast, and while it is broken you are not charged, because
only delivered results cost anything.
