## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## ECB Exchange Rates: euro reference rates per currency per day

Official euro reference rates of the European Central Bank per currency per day, with the inverse rate, the change against the previous day and cross rates between two currencies, for the last days or years back to 1999. Up to 50 currencies a run. Pay per rate.

### Why this scraper

- **Only delivered results are charged.** Inputs that fail come back as clear error
  records at no cost.
- The rates are the ECB's own daily fixings, read from the ECB's XML files, the reference that invoices, contracts and tax authorities across Europe use. Measured on the platform: 30 days of USD, GBP, JPY and the USD/GBP cross rate, 114 rows, in a few seconds for a thirtieth of a cent.
- One download per run, whatever the number of currencies: the file with the last 90 days (or the full history since 1999 when the period asks for it) is fetched once and shared, so fifty currencies cost one request to the ECB.
- Every row is ready for a spreadsheet or a ledger: the date, the rate as fixed, its inverse, the previous day's rate, the change and the percentage change, and for a pair such as USD/GBP the cross rate derived from the two euro fixings of the same day, flagged as such.
- Exactly the days the ECB publishes: one per TARGET business day, none on weekends or holidays, so no interpolated or invented rates.

### Who this is for

Put currencies in `currencies` (up to 50 per run: ISO codes such as `USD`, `GBP`, `JPY`, or pairs such as `USD/GBP`), set `days` (default 30, up to 7,000) or `sinceDate` (YYYY-MM-DD). Built for finance and accounting teams that convert at the official reference rate, e-commerce pricing in several currencies, treasury reporting, and analysts who need years of daily history in one table.

### Who this is not for

The ECB publishes 30 currencies against the euro, around 16:00 CET on business days; if you need a currency the ECB does not fix (for example AED or ARS), intraday rates, or a rate for today before the fixing, this is the wrong source, and an unknown currency comes back as a free `INVALID_CURRENCY` row listing what is available. Cross rates are computed from two euro fixings and are not an official quote of that pair. Rates are reference rates, not tradable prices.

### Input fields

| Field | Type | Required or default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| `currencies` | list of text | required | One per row, up to 50: ISO codes such as USD, GBP, JPY, CHF, or a pair like USD/GBP for a cross rate. The ECB publishes 30 currencies against the euro. |
| `days` | number | 30 | How many trading days back, newest first. Up to 90 comes from the ECB's 90-day file; more reads the full history since 1999. |
| `sinceDate` | text | | Only days on or after this date (YYYY-MM-DD). Overrides days when set. |

### Input example

```json
{
    "currencies": [
        "USD",
        "GBP",
        "USD/GBP"
    ],
    "days": 30
}
```

### Output example

| Field | Type | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| `date` | text | The fixing day; the ECB publishes one reference rate per trading day around 16:00 CET, none on weekends and TARGET holidays. |
| `currency` | text | The quoted currency: the row says how many of it one unit of base buys. |
| `base` | text | EUR for the ECB's own rates; the first currency of a pair for a cross rate (USD in USD/GBP). |
| `rate` | number | Units of currency per one unit of base, as the ECB fixed it (or derived from two fixings for a pair). |
| `inverseRate` | number | Units of base per one unit of currency, the same rate the other way round. |
| `previousRate` | number | The rate on the previous trading day in the file; empty on the oldest day delivered. |
| `change` | number | rate minus previousRate. |
| `changePercent` | number | The change as a percentage of previousRate. |
| `isCrossRate` | true/false | True when both sides are non-euro currencies and the rate was derived from their euro fixings of the same day. |
| `source` | text | The ECB file the row came from: the daily, 90-day or full-history XML. |

Error codes: `INVALID_CURRENCY`, `NO_DATA`, `BLOCKED`.

One delivered row looks like this:

```json
{
  "date": "2026-09-24",
  "currency": "USD",
  "base": "EUR",
  "rate": 1.1367,
  "inverseRate": 0.87974,
  "previousRate": 1.1411,
  "change": -0.0044,
  "changePercent": -0.3856,
  "isCrossRate": false,
  "source": "https://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/eurofxref/eurofxref-hist-90d.xml",
  "status": "ok"
}
```

### Pricing

Pay per event: one `rate-listed` event per delivered result. No charge for inputs
that fail, no separate platform-usage surcharge.

**Free Apify plan:** this actor delivers up to 25 rows per run for accounts on the Apify free
plan, and then stops with a message. That limit is set by us, not by Apify. It exists so the
actor keeps paying for itself for the people who do pay. Any paid Apify plan runs it at full
size, billed per delivered row, with failed rows never charged.

**Reviews:** if this actor saves you time, a short review on this page is the one thing that
helps most. Ratings are what other buyers look at first, and we have no other way to ask.

### FAQ

**Is personal data collected?**
No. The rows are exchange rates.

**Which currencies are available?**
The 30 the ECB fixes: USD, JPY, BGN, CZK, DKK, GBP, HUF, PLN, RON, SEK, CHF, ISK, NOK, TRY, AUD, BRL, CAD, CNY, HKD, IDR, ILS, INR, KRW, MXN, MYR, NZD, PHP, SGD, THB and ZAR. An unknown code comes back as a free error row that lists them.

**How do I get today's rate?**
Set `days` to 1. The ECB publishes the fixing around 16:00 CET; before that, the newest row is yesterday's, and the `date` field says which day it is.

**How far back does the history go?**
To January 1999 for the currencies that existed then; set `days` above 90 or a `sinceDate` and the actor reads the ECB's full-history file (about 5 MB, still one download).

**How is a cross rate computed?**
GBP per USD equals (GBP per EUR) divided by (USD per EUR) on the same fixing day. `isCrossRate` is true on those rows so they are not mistaken for an official quote of the pair.

**What does a run cost when a currency is unknown?**
Nothing. `INVALID_CURRENCY`, `NO_DATA` and `BLOCKED` rows are free; only delivered rates are charged.

**What happens when the source changes?**
Sources change from time to time; that is the nature of this work. The actor is
monitored daily and fixed fast, and while it is broken you are not charged, because
only delivered results cost anything.
