## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## EU Safety Gate Product Recall Alerts

Turn the EU's official rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products into clean, structured data - and keep it current with a monitoring run that only returns what is new.

Safety Gate publishes a report every Friday listing products that market surveillance authorities across the EU have flagged as dangerous. The official portal gives you a web page and an XML file per week. This Actor gives you one flat record per alert, deduplicated, filterable, and ready for a database, a spreadsheet, or an LLM.

### What you get

One record per alert, with the fields that matter for compliance work:

| Field | Description |
| --- | --- |
| `caseNumber` | Official case reference, e.g. `SR/02869/26` |
| `publicationDate` | ISO date of the weekly report |
| `category` | Product category, e.g. `Jewellery`, `Toys` |
| `product`, `name`, `brand`, `model` | Product identification |
| `batchNumber`, `barcode`, `productionDates` | Batch-level identification, when supplied |
| `description` | Plain-language product description |
| `riskType` | `Chemical`, `Injuries`, `Choking`, … |
| `riskLevel` | e.g. `Serious risk` |
| `danger` | What exactly is wrong with the product |
| `measures` | Action taken, and by whom |
| `notifyingCountry`, `countryOfOrigin` | Who raised the alert, where the product came from |
| `onlineTrader` | Marketplace or shop, where recorded |
| `alertUrl`, `recallUrl`, `pictureUrls` | Links back to the official record |

### Two ways to run it

**Monitoring** (default) returns only the weekly reports published since the previous run, and remembers where it stopped. Schedule it weekly and you get new alerts and nothing else. A run with no new report is a valid result - it means nothing was published.

**Backfill** ignores that memory and always takes the most recent reports. Set `maxReports` to 52 to pull a year of history.

### Filters

Narrow the output to what you actually monitor:

- `categories` - e.g. `["Toys", "Jewellery"]`
- `notifyingCountries` - e.g. `["Germany", "France"]`
- `riskTypes` - e.g. `["Chemical"]`
- `seriousRiskOnly` - keep only alerts classified as a serious risk
- `maxItems` - hard cap on the number of alerts

### Who uses this

- **Retailers and marketplaces** that have to delist affected articles
- **Quality and compliance teams** at manufacturers and importers
- **Insurers and law firms** working on product liability
- **Consumer publications** and newsrooms
- **AI agents** that need grounded, current product safety facts

### Example output

```json
{
  "caseNumber": "SR/02869/26",
  "publicationDate": "2026-10-16",
  "category": "Jewellery",
  "product": "Necklace",
  "name": "Squid game necklace",
  "model": "RM-JL-6641",
  "description": "Necklace with a cross-shaped pendant featuring a hidden compartment.",
  "riskType": "Chemical",
  "riskLevel": "Serious risk",
  "danger": "The product has an excessive concentration of cadmium (measured value: 6.4% by weight).",
  "notifyingCountry": "Sweden",
  "countryOfOrigin": "Unknown",
  "onlineTrader": "Other(Fyndiq.se) /",
  "alertUrl": "https://ec.europa.eu/safety-gate-alerts/screen/webReport/alertDetail/10097467",
  "source": "EU Safety Gate",
  "sourceLicence": "CC BY 4.0 (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU)"
}
```

### Source and licence

Data comes from the official EU Safety Gate weekly report API, not from scraping the portal. Content published by the European Commission is reusable under **CC BY 4.0** (Commission Decision 2011/833/EU), which permits commercial reuse with attribution. Every record carries the source and licence so that attribution travels with the data.

Product images are **linked, not copied**: the EU reuse policy excludes third-party works and industrial property rights, and the photographs in an alert generally belong to the manufacturer or the reporting authority.

This Actor collects no personal data.

# Actor input Schema

## `mode` (type: `string`):

Monitoring returns only weekly reports published since the previous run and remembers where it stopped. Backfill ignores that memory and always takes the most recent reports.

## `language` (type: `string`):

Language of the official report. Safety Gate publishes every EU language; 'en' is the most complete.

## `maxReports` (type: `integer`):

How many weekly reports to process in one run. One report covers one week and holds roughly 50-100 alerts.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Stop after this many alerts. 0 means no limit.

## `seriousRiskOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Keep only alerts classified as a serious risk.

## `categories` (type: `array`):

Keep only these categories, for example 'Toys' or 'Jewellery'. Empty means all.

## `notifyingCountries` (type: `array`):

Keep only alerts raised by these countries, for example 'Germany'. Empty means all.

## `riskTypes` (type: `array`):

Keep only these risk types, for example 'Chemical' or 'Injuries'. Empty means all.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "mode": "monitoring",
  "language": "en",
  "maxReports": 1,
  "maxItems": 0,
  "seriousRiskOnly": false,
  "categories": [],
  "notifyingCountries": [],
  "riskTypes": []
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `alerts` (type: `string`):

All alerts from this run, one record per alert.

## `alertsCsv` (type: `string`):

The same alerts as a spreadsheet-ready export.

## `monitoringState` (type: `string`):

The last weekly report this Actor processed. The next run in monitoring mode continues from here.
