## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

### What you get

Every trending search Google lists in the time window you choose: the past 4 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours or 7 days. A US test on 29 October 2026 found about 110 trends in 4 hours, 550 in 24 hours and 3,400 in 7 days.

| Data | Details |
|---|---|
| Search volume | A number (200000) and Google's label (200K+): Google's lower bound for all searches since the trend started |
| Growth | The rise in searches, in percent. Google caps it at 1,000 |
| Timing | When the trend started, and when it ended or that it's still active |
| Categories | Google's labels, such as Sports, Politics, Entertainment or Business and Finance |
| Related searches | The searches Google groups into the trend |
| News | Headline, link, source and picture for each article, plus a lead picture, for about the top 10 trends per country |
| Rank and link | The trend's position in Google's list for the country, and a link to explore it on Google Trends |
| Monitoring | With a monitor ID, `isNew` and `firstSeenAt` for each trend |

**Filters,** all applied before you pay:

- categories: any of Google's 19, such as Sports, Politics, Technology or Business and Finance;
- only trends still active;
- a minimum search volume;
- the sort order: Google's order, search volume, newest first or growth;
- a cap per country.

**Trending searches only.** This Actor doesn't return interest over time, interest by region, Explore comparisons or anything older than 7 days. See the FAQ.

### Who it's for

- **Newsrooms:** see which stories people are searching for in each country, with the news articles Google links to the top trends.
- **Content and social teams:** find today's rising topics by country and category, and publish while they're still active.
- **Marketers and SEO teams:** watch what's taking off in your markets, with the related searches Google groups into each trend.
- **Traders and analysts:** follow Business and Finance trends across countries, such as a stock ticker spiking on earnings day.
- **App and dashboard builders:** feed trending searches into apps, bots or dashboards on a schedule through the Apify API.

### How much does it cost?

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Trend delivered | $1.00 per 1,000 ($0.001 each) |
| Run start | Apify's standard start fee |

**Worked examples,** from runs on Apify on 29 October 2026 (plus the start fee each):

- **The US, past 24 hours, every trend:** about 550 trends × $0.001 = about $0.55.
- **15 countries, past 24 hours:** 3,744 trends from 12 countries = $3.74. The 3 countries with no data were free.
- **A monitor of the US and GB, past 4 hours:** the first run delivered 236 trends, $0.236. A second run 2 minutes later found 1 new trend, $0.001.

On an hourly schedule with "Output only new trends" on, each trend is charged once per monitor, however many runs see it. A run that finds nothing new costs only the start fee.

**Free:**

- countries Google Trends has no data for, and countries that can't be read;
- trends removed by your filters or your cap;
- with "Output only new trends" on, trends the monitor has already output.

**Spending limit:** set a maximum cost per run in Apify Console. The run delivers trends up to that amount, then stops cleanly and reads no more countries. The run summary then shows `stoppedAtSpendingLimit: true`.

### How to use it

1. **Pick countries,** up to 60 per run. Countries Google Trends doesn't cover are reported and not charged.
2. **Choose the time window:** past 4 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours or 7 days. You get trends that started within it.
3. **Filter and sort (optional):** categories, only active trends, a minimum search volume, the sort order, and the maximum trends per country. Set the maximum to `0` for all, often 300–600 a day for a big country.
4. **Click Start.** Runs in testing took 3 to 51 seconds, from 20 trends to 15 countries.
5. **View and download** the **Trends** view on the Output tab, or export the dataset as JSON, CSV or Excel.

News articles are on by default. Turn **Add news articles** off if you don't need them; the feed then isn't read.

#### Get only new trends, on a schedule

1. **Monitor ID (for scheduled runs):** any name, such as `us-hourly`. Use letters, digits and dashes, up to 60 characters.
2. **Output only new trends:** on (the default) outputs only trends new since the last run. Off outputs all trends, with new ones marked.
3. **Time window:** choose one longer than the gap between runs, so no trend is missed. For hourly runs, the past 4 hours leaves a margin.
4. **Schedule it:** save your input as a task, then create a schedule for it in Apify Console, such as every hour.

### Example input

**The US, past 24 hours, every trend, biggest first.** About 550 trends in testing.

```json
{
  "countries": ["US"],
  "hours": "24",
  "sortBy": "searchVolume",
  "maxTrendsPerCountry": 0,
  "includeNews": true
}
```

**Sports in three countries, as an hourly monitor.** Schedule it every hour; each run outputs only new sports trends with 10K+ searches.

```json
{
  "countries": ["US", "GB", "IN"],
  "hours": "4",
  "categories": ["17"],
  "activeOnly": true,
  "minSearchVolume": 10000,
  "sortBy": "searchVolume",
  "maxTrendsPerCountry": 50,
  "includeNews": true,
  "monitorId": "hourly-sports",
  "onlyNew": true
}
```

In the API, `hours` is a string: `"4"`, `"24"`, `"48"` or `"168"`. Countries are two-letter codes in capitals, such as `US`, `GB` or `JP`.

**Category codes** for the API:

| Code | Category | Code | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| `1` | Autos and Vehicles | `11` | Other |
| `2` | Beauty and Fashion | `13` | Pets and Animals |
| `3` | Business and Finance | `14` | Politics |
| `4` | Entertainment | `15` | Science |
| `5` | Food and Drink | `16` | Shopping |
| `6` | Games | `17` | Sports |
| `7` | Health | `18` | Technology |
| `8` | Hobbies and Leisure | `19` | Travel and Transportation |
| `9` | Jobs and Education | `20` | Climate |
| `10` | Law and Government | | |

### Example output

One row per trending search. This one comes from Google's US page and feed saved on 29 October 2026, shortened:

```json
{
  "country": "US",
  "countryName": "United States",
  "term": "barbara barrie",
  "searchVolume": 10000,
  "searchVolumeLabel": "10K+",
  "increasePercent": 1000,
  "startedAt": "2026-10-28T20:40:00.000Z",
  "endedAt": null,
  "active": true,
  "categories": ["Entertainment"],
  "relatedQueries": ["barbara barrie", "barney miller", "breaking away"],
  "newsArticles": [
    {
      "title": "Barbara Barrie, Oscar Nominee Known for Mom Roles and More, Has Died",
      "url": "https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/28/theater/barbara-barrie-dead.html",
      "source": "The New York Times",
      "picture": "https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:…"
    }
  ],
  "picture": "https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:…",
  "pictureSource": "The New York Times",
  "rank": 5,
  "timeWindowHours": 24,
  "exploreUrl": "https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&q=barbara%20barrie&date=now%207-d"
}
```

**The fields:**

- **Search volume:** `searchVolume` is Google's lower bound for all searches since the trend started, not a daily count. `searchVolumeLabel` shows it Google's way: 500+, 10K+, 200K+, 2.5M+.
- **Growth:** `increasePercent` is the rise in searches, in percent, capped at 1,000 by Google.
- **Start and end:** `startedAt` and `endedAt` are UTC times. `endedAt` is null while the trend is active, and `active` says the same as true or false.
- **Categories:** Google's labels. A trend can have several, or only "Other".
- **Rank:** `rank` is the position in Google's list for the country. It stays the same whatever sort order you choose.
- **Time window:** `timeWindowHours` is the window you asked for: 4, 24, 48 or 168.
- **News:** `newsArticles` lists each article's headline, link, source and picture. `picture` and `pictureSource` are the feed's lead image for the trend. Trends outside the feed have an empty list and null pictures.
- **Explore link:** `exploreUrl` opens the trend on Google Trends (past 7 days) in your browser. The Actor doesn't read that page.
- **Read time:** `fetchedAt` is when the run read the data.
- **With a monitor ID:** `isNew` is true when no earlier run of this monitor output the trend, and `firstSeenAt` is when one first did. A trend is identified by its search term and start time, per country.

**Run summary:** the `RUN_SUMMARY` record in the run's key-value store has:

- `trendsListed`: trends Google listed for the countries read;
- `rows`: trends delivered and charged;
- `filteredOut`: trends removed by your filters, free;
- `notNew`: trends the monitor had already output, free;
- `newTrends`: new trends delivered, with a monitor ID;
- `unsupportedCountries`: countries Google Trends has no data for, free;
- `failedCountries`: countries that couldn't be read, each with the reason, free;
- `stoppedAtSpendingLimit`: true when the run stopped at your maximum cost per run;
- the input's `hours`, `countries` and `monitorId`, and `finishedAt`.

The run's status line sums it up, for example: `3744 trends from 12 countries; no data for AF, AQ, VA.`

### Integrations

- **Apify API:** start a run and get the trends back as a JSON array in one call. `YOUR_TOKEN` is your Apify API token.

  ```bash
  curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/subtleasianmerch~google-trends-trending-now/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_TOKEN" \
    -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
    -d '{"countries": ["US"], "hours": "4", "sortBy": "searchVolume", "maxTrendsPerCountry": 20}'
  ```

- **Schedules:** run a monitor every hour, or every day, for a feed of new trends.

- **Slack, email and webhooks:** connect the task with Apify's integrations to send each run's new trends on. The Actor doesn't send messages itself.

- **Make, Zapier and n8n:** pass new trends to your own workflows when a run finishes.

- **Monitoring:** Apify's monitoring can alert you by email or Slack when a scheduled run fails.

### FAQ

**Is it legal to use?** The Actor reads Google Trends' public "Trending now" page and its RSS feed with ordinary, paced requests. Google's robots.txt doesn't close those two to automated access; it does close the Explore pages, which this Actor doesn't read. If you publish the data, credit Google Trends, and make sure your use fits Google's terms. This isn't legal advice.

**Does it give interest over time or Explore data?** No. It reads "Trending now" only: the searches spiking in each country over the past 4 hours to 7 days. Open a trend's `exploreUrl` to see its chart on Google Trends yourself.

**Which countries does it cover?** Google Trends "Trending now" covers about 125 countries. The country list has 217 to choose from; countries without coverage are reported in the run summary, free. In testing, Afghanistan, Antarctica and Vatican City had no data.

**How do I avoid missing trends between monitor runs?** Choose a time window longer than the gap between runs, so each trend is still listed at the next run. For hourly runs, the past 4 hours leaves a 3-hour margin. A trend your filters or cap leave out isn't marked as seen. A later run can still output it, for example once its volume reaches your minimum.

**Why do so many trends show 1,000% growth?** Google caps growth at 1,000%, so fast-rising trends all show it. When you sort by growth, ties are ordered by search volume.

**Why do only some trends have news?** Google's trending feed carries news for about the top 10 trends per country, and that's all it publishes. News is matched on the trend's name or one of its related searches. If the feed can't be read, the trends are still delivered, without news.

**How are category filters applied?** Google's page doesn't filter by category or status, so the Actor applies those filters after reading. Trends they remove are free.

**Why did a country return nothing?** Google Trends doesn't cover every country. Those countries are listed under `unsupportedCountries` in the run summary and cost nothing. A country Google blocked or that kept failing is under `failedCountries`, with the reason, also free.

**How does it read Google?** With ordinary requests, no proxies and no browser. It sends one request for the page per country, plus one for the feed when news is on, 1.5 seconds apart. HTTP 429 and server errors get three tries in all, waiting for Google's Retry-After time or 15 and then 30 seconds. A Google block page stops that country; the Actor doesn't try to get past blocks.

**What if Google changes its page?** The run fails with a clear message instead of returning nothing.

**How do I start a monitor over?** Use a new monitor ID. Each ID remembers the trends it has output for 30 days, in a key-value store named `google-trends-trending-now-state` in your account. Monitors with different IDs don't affect each other.

# Actor input Schema

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Trending searches are read for each country. Countries Google Trends doesn't cover are reported and not charged.

## `hours` (type: `string`):

Trends that started within this window.

## `categories` (type: `array`):

Only trends in any of these categories. Leave empty for all.

## `activeOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Skip trends Google marks as ended.

## `minSearchVolume` (type: `integer`):

Skip trends with fewer searches, e.g. 10000 for "10K+" and up.

## `sortBy` (type: `string`):

Order of trends within each country. Google's order is its own relevance ranking.

## `maxTrendsPerCountry` (type: `integer`):

0 means all of them (often 300–600 a day for a big country, over 3,000 a week).

## `includeNews` (type: `boolean`):
