## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## App Store & Google Play Keyword Rank Tracker (ASO)

Track where your apps rank for each keyword on the **App Store** and **Google Play**, in **many countries in one run**. You get one flat row per keyword, country, store and app: the app's rank, or `NOT_IN_RESULTS` when it isn't listed. Optionally you also get the apps that lead each keyword, and each row shows **how the rank changed since your last run**. No login, no API key, no browser.

### What you get

| Feature | What it means |
|-|-|
| **Your rank per keyword** | Rank 1-200 on the App Store, or about 1-30 on Google Play (up to 50 in some countries such as Japan) (as deep as each store's search lists), for every app you track |
| **Many countries per run** | `countries: ["us", "gb", "de", "jp"]` checks every keyword in every storefront in the same run |
| **Both stores at once** | Track your App Store id and your Google Play package side by side |
| **Competitors** | `topN` adds the apps that rank first for each keyword, with developer, rating and installs |
| **Rank changes** | `previousRank`, `rankChange` and `changeStatus` (`UP`, `DOWN`, `SAME`, `ENTERED`, `DROPPED_OUT`, `FIRST_CHECK`) compare each rank with the previous run of the same watch |
| **Honest misses** | An app that isn't listed is still a row (`rank: null`, `NOT_IN_RESULTS`), and `searchDepth` says how far the store's list went |

### How to use it

1. Add your **keywords**, e.g. `meditation`, `sleep sounds`.
2. Add your **apps** and your competitors':
   - App Store: the numeric id (`493145008`) or the `apps.apple.com` link.
   - Google Play: the package (`com.calm.android`) or the `play.google.com` link.
   - A package-style id is also checked as an App Store bundle id, and it is tracked in every store where it exists.
3. Pick the **countries** and the **store** (`both`, `apple` or `google`).
4. Run it. To build a rank history, **schedule it daily** (Apify Schedules). Each run then reports the change since the previous one.

If you leave `apps` empty, you get the top 10 apps for each keyword. This is useful for keyword research and competitor scouting.

### Input example

```json
{
    "keywords": ["meditation", "sleep sounds"],
    "apps": ["493145008", "com.getsomeheadspace.android", "571800810", "com.calm.android"],
    "countries": ["us", "gb"],
    "store": "both",
    "topN": 3
}
```

### Output example

```json
{
    "keyword": "meditation",
    "country": "us",
    "store": "apple",
    "language": null,
    "appId": "493145008",
    "searchDepth": 192,
    "previousRank": 3,
    "rankChange": 1,
    "changeStatus": "UP",
    "rating": 4.84216,
    "ratingCount": 973786,
    "installs": null,
    "price": "Free",
    "input": "493145008",
    "checkedAt": "2026-10-29T07:00:00.000Z"
}
```

| Field | Meaning |
|-|-|
| `rank` | Position in the store's search results for the keyword (1 = first). `null` when the app is not listed |
| `rankStatus` | `RANKED` or `NOT_IN_RESULTS` |
| `searchDepth` | How many apps the store listed for this search. A `NOT_IN_RESULTS` means "not in these N" |
| `tracked` | `true` for your apps, `false` for top-N competitor rows |
| `previousRank`, `rankChange` | The rank at the previous run of this watch. `rankChange` is positive when the app moved up |
| `changeStatus` | `UP`, `DOWN`, `SAME`, `ENTERED` (newly listed), `DROPPED_OUT`, `STILL_OUT`, `FIRST_CHECK`, or `NOT_COMPARABLE` (the list no longer reaches the old position) |
| `language` | The Google Play interface language used for the search (App Store rows: `null`) |
| `installs` | Google Play's install band (e.g. `10,000,000+`). The App Store does not publish installs |

### How the rank is measured

- **App Store:** the order of Apple's public App Store search API (iTunes Search) for the keyword in that storefront. It checks up to 200 positions; Apple usually returns about 170-195 of them. We compared it with Apple's own web App Store search (apps.apple.com) on 8 keywords in 2 countries on 2026-10-29. The two top-11 app lists matched to within about two places. That web page shows only 12 results, so the API is the only keyless way to reach positions 13-200. In-app search can also be personalised, so treat ranks as a consistent public measure rather than what every single user sees.
- **Google Play:** the order of Google Play's web search. A brand's featured card counts as rank 1, and "similar apps" clusters are not counted. This search lists about **20-50 apps per keyword** (30 in most countries checked, 50 in Japan), so a Google Play app below that position reads `NOT_IN_RESULTS`.
- **Language:** Google Play ranks differently per interface language. For "budget" in Germany, the English and German results shared only 8 of 30 positions. By default each country uses its main language (`de` for Germany, `ja` for Japan, `en` where not listed); set `language` to override. The App Store always uses the storefront's own language.

### Rank changes and watches

When `trackChanges` is on (the default), the actor remembers the last rank of every keyword, country, store and app. It keeps them in a key-value store named `app-keyword-rank-history` in your own Apify account, and compares each new run against it. It saves only when a rank actually changed.

By default, a **watch** is the exact set of keywords, apps, countries and settings. If you change any of them, the comparison starts fresh (`FIRST_CHECK`). To keep comparing while you add or remove keywords, give the watch a name in `historyName` (e.g. `my-app-us`).

### Pricing

**$1.50 per 1,000 rank rows + $0.001 per run**, platform usage included. Store discounts apply: Bronze $1.35, Silver $1.20, Gold $1.05 per 1,000 rows.

- One row = one keyword × country × store × app (tracked or top-N).
- A tracked app that ranks inside your top-N is returned once, not twice.
- Nothing is charged for apps that don't exist, countries the store doesn't serve, or searches that failed.
- A store is searched only when one of your apps can be there, or when `topN` is above 0, so a store none of your apps is on is never searched or charged. A tracked app that does not rank is still a charged row (`NOT_IN_RESULTS`): that is the measurement.

Example: 20 keywords × 2 countries × 2 stores × 2 tracked apps = 160 rows ≈ $0.24 per daily run.

### FAQ

**Which ids do I need?** On the App Store, the number in the app's link (`apps.apple.com/us/app/calm/id571800810` → `571800810`). On Google Play, the `id=` part of the link (`com.calm.android`). You can paste the full links too.

**Why is my app `NOT_IN_RESULTS`?** It isn't in the first `searchDepth` apps the store listed for that keyword in that country. On Google Play that list is short (about 20-50 apps). If the app isn't sold in a country at all, the run tells you in its status message and charges nothing for it.

**Does it show search volume or keyword popularity?** No. This actor reports measured positions only, with no third-party estimates. For keyword ideas, use autocomplete suggestions: see [Keyword Suggest Scraper](https://apify.com/tagadanar/keyword-suggest-scraper).

**Can I run it on a schedule?** Yes, that's the intended use. Schedule it daily with the same input (or the same `historyName`), and every run reports `UP`/`DOWN`/`ENTERED`/`DROPPED_OUT` since the previous one.

**What does the run status tell me?** It counts the rows and searches, and names anything that didn't run: a country the store doesn't serve, an app id that doesn't exist, a search the store refused, or the run timeout. The full per-search list is in the run's `RUN_SUMMARY` record.

# Actor input Schema

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

Search phrases to check, as users type them in the store (e.g. "meditation", "sleep sounds"). Up to 300 per run. Each keyword is searched once per country and store.

## `apps` (type: `array`):

Your apps and your competitors'. App Store: the numeric id (493145008) or the apps.apple.com link. Google Play: the package (com.calm.android) or the play.google.com link. A package-style id is also checked as an App Store bundle id. Every app gets a row per keyword, country and store: its rank, or NOT_IN_RESULTS. Leave empty to get the top apps only.

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Two-letter country codes of the storefronts to check (us, gb, de, fr, jp, br…). Up to 60 per run. Default: us.

## `store` (type: `string`):

Which store to search. A store is only searched when one of your apps can live there or Top apps per keyword is above 0.

## `topN` (type: `integer`):

Also return the first N apps that rank for each keyword, as competitor rows (each is one charged row; a tracked app is never returned twice). Default: 0 when you track apps, 10 when you track none. Google Play's web search lists about 20-50 apps per keyword.

## `searchDepth` (type: `integer`):

How deep to look for your apps on the App Store (Apple's search API returns up to about 190 of the 200 positions asked). Google Play's web search lists about 20-50 apps, whatever the setting. An app not found within the depth gets rank null and NOT_IN_RESULTS.

## `language` (type: `string`):

Optional language code for Google Play searches (en, de, pt-BR…). Google Play ranks differently per interface language; by default each country uses its main language (de for Germany, ja for Japan, en where unlisted). The App Store always uses the storefront's own language.

## `trackChanges` (type: `boolean`):

Compare every rank with the previous run of the same watch and fill previousRank, rankChange and changeStatus (UP, DOWN, SAME, ENTERED, DROPPED_OUT, FIRST_CHECK). Schedule the actor daily for a rank history.

## `historyName` (type: `string`):

By default a watch is its exact set of keywords, apps, countries and settings: change any of them and the comparison starts fresh. Give a name (e.g. "my-app-us") to keep comparing ranks while you add or remove keywords.
