# Bulk RDAP Domain Lookup (WHOIS Alternative) (`taroyamada/rdap-domain-lookup`) Actor

Look up many domains at once over RDAP, the ICANN standard that replaces WHOIS. Get registrar, creation/update/expiry dates, status codes and name servers. No personal contact data is collected.

## Pricing

from $7.00 / 1,000 domain results

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

## Bulk RDAP Domain Lookup (WHOIS Alternative)

Look up registration data for many domains in one run using **RDAP** (Registration Data Access Protocol), the ICANN-standard successor to port-43 WHOIS. The Actor reads the official IANA RDAP bootstrap file (`data.iana.org/rdap/dns.json`) to find the right registry server for each TLD, then queries it directly.

### What you get per domain

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `registrar` / `registrarIanaId` | Sponsoring registrar name and IANA ID |
| `createdAt`, `updatedAt`, `expiresAt` | Registration, last-changed and expiration dates (as published by the registry) |
| `domainStatus` | EPP status codes (e.g. client transfer prohibited) |
| `nameservers` | Delegated name servers |
| `dnssecSigned` | Whether the delegation is DNSSEC-signed |
| `rdapServer` | The registry RDAP server that answered |

**No personal data is collected.** Registrant, admin and tech contact entities are ignored; only registrar-level and domain-level fields are output.

### How to use

1. Click **Start** with the prefilled sample domains to see the output format.
2. Replace the list with your own domains (URLs are accepted; `www.` is stripped).
3. Export results as JSON, CSV or Excel, or call the Actor through the API.

### Use cases

- Expiry monitoring for a domain portfolio
- Checking registrar and name-server setup across client domains
- Enriching lead or vendor lists with domain age

### Pricing

Pay per event: a small start fee plus a fee per domain **successfully** returned. Domains that fail (invalid, not registered, TLD without RDAP, registry error) are not written to the dataset and are not charged; they are saved to the key-value store record `FAILED_DOMAINS` with the reason.

### Limitations

- Some ccTLDs do not publish an RDAP server in the IANA bootstrap; these are reported as `no_rdap_server`.
- Field coverage depends on each registry. Thin registries (e.g. .com) return registrar-level data only.
- Lookups are rate-limited (low default concurrency, batch delay, retry with backoff on 429) to respect registry limits.

### Data sources and terms

Data comes from public RDAP services operated by domain registries, located via the IANA bootstrap registry. Use the output in line with each registry's RDAP terms of use. This Actor is not affiliated with ICANN, IANA or any registry.

# Actor input Schema

## `domains` (type: `array`):

Domain names to look up (e.g. example.com). URLs are accepted; the hostname's registrable part is used as typed.

## `concurrency` (type: `integer`):

Parallel lookups. Kept low to respect registry RDAP rate limits.

## `delayMs` (type: `integer`):

Politeness pause between batches.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "domains": [
    "google.com",
    "wikipedia.org",
    "apify.com"
  ],
  "concurrency": 3,
  "delayMs": 500
}
```

## `results` (type: `string`):

## `failed` (type: `string`):

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "domains": [
        "google.com",
        "wikipedia.org",
        "apify.com"
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("taroyamada/rdap-domain-lookup").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
