## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

### What does Website Technology Detector do?

**Website Technology Detector** is a **Wappalyzer alternative** and **BuiltWith alternative** that finds the **tech stack of any website in bulk** for about **$10 per 1,000 sites**. Give it a list of domains and it returns the **CMS, ecommerce platform, analytics and marketing tools, JavaScript frameworks, CDN, hosting, payment providers, email provider and SaaS vendors** each site uses, with versions and categories.

It checks every site against **7,600+ technology fingerprints** (the open Wappalyzer-format database) plus **DNS records**, so it also detects tools that never show up in a page's HTML: Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, SendGrid, Salesforce, HubSpot, DocuSign, OpenAI, Atlassian and hundreds more.

It works as a fast, low-cost **Wappalyzer API**: plain HTTP requests, no browser.

### Why use a website technology lookup?

- 🎯 **Lead generation and sales prospecting**: find every Shopify store, WordPress site, HubSpot user or Stripe merchant in a list and target them.
- 🧭 **Competitor research**: see which analytics, A/B testing, chat and payment tools competitors run.
- 📈 **Market sizing**: measure the market share of a technology across thousands of domains.
- 🧹 **CRM enrichment**: add tech stack, email provider and social links to company records.
- 🔐 **Security and IT audits**: inventory server software, CDNs and versions across your domains.

Runs on the Apify platform, so you get an **API**, scheduling, webhooks and integrations with Make, Zapier, n8n, Google Sheets and Clay.

### What data does it extract?

| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| `domain` | `allbirds.com` |
| `technologyNames` | `Shopify, Cloudflare, Google Tag Manager, PayPal, Apple Pay` |
| `technologies[]` | name, version, confidence, categories, website, SaaS, open source, pricing |
| `categories` | `{ "Ecommerce": ["Shopify"], "CDN": ["Cloudflare"] }` |
| `title`, `description`, `language` | page title, meta description, `en` |
| `socialLinks` | company Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, GitHub links |
| `statusCode`, `finalUrl` | HTTP status and URL after redirects |

### How to find out what technology a website uses

1. Click **Try for free**.
2. Paste domains or URLs into **Domains or URLs** (one per line, thousands at once is fine).
3. Click **Start**.
4. Download results as **CSV, Excel, JSON or HTML**, or fetch them through the API.

### How much does it cost?

You pay **per website successfully analyzed: $0.01** (**$10 per 1,000 sites**). Sites that fail to load (dead domains, timeouts) are **not charged**. Apify's free plan includes monthly credit, so you can test on hundreds of sites at no cost.

### Input

See the **Input** tab for all options. Example:

```json
{
    "domains": ["shopify.com", "https://www.allbirds.com", "wordpress.org"],
    "checkDns": true,
    "maxConcurrency": 20
}
```

### Output example

```json
{
    "domain": "allbirds.com",
    "statusCode": 200,
    "title": "Allbirds: Sustainable Shoes & Clothing",
    "technologyCount": 8,
    "technologyNames": "Apple Pay, Cloudflare, Google Tag Manager, HTTP/3, Microsoft 365, PayPal, Shopify, Swiper",
    "technologies": [
        { "name": "Shopify", "version": null, "confidence": 100, "categories": ["Ecommerce"], "website": "https://shopify.com", "saas": true, "openSource": false, "pricing": ["mid", "recurring"] }
    ],
    "categories": { "Ecommerce": ["Shopify"], "CDN": ["Cloudflare"], "Payment processors": ["PayPal", "Apple Pay"] },
    "socialLinks": ["https://www.instagram.com/allbirds/"]
}
```

You can download the dataset in various formats such as JSON, HTML, CSV, or Excel.

### Tips

- **Turn off "Detect email & DNS providers"** if you only need front-end technologies; it is slightly faster.
- Pass the **homepage** for the most complete result; inner pages often load fewer scripts.
- If a large share of sites block requests, enable **Apify Proxy** in the input.

### FAQ

#### Is this a free Wappalyzer API alternative?

It uses the same open fingerprint format as Wappalyzer and adds DNS-based detection. You only pay a small amount per site analyzed, with no subscription.

#### How accurate is it?

Each technology comes with a confidence score. Detection uses HTTP headers, cookies, HTML, scripts, meta tags, DOM selectors and DNS records. Technologies that only reveal themselves through JavaScript executed in a browser may be missed.

#### Can I use it from code or AI agents?

Yes. Call it through the Apify API, the JavaScript or Python client, or the Apify MCP server.

#### Credits

Technology fingerprints come from the open-source [webappanalyzer](https://github.com/enthec/webappanalyzer) project (GPL-3.0).

#### Support

Found a site that's detected wrong? Open an issue in the **Issues** tab and it will be fixed quickly.

This Actor only reads publicly available website data and DNS records. It does not log in or collect personal data.

# Actor input Schema

## `domains` (type: `array`):

Websites to analyze. Bare domains (shopify.com) or full URLs (https://www.example.com/page). One site = one result.

## `checkDns` (type: `boolean`):

Look up MX, TXT and NS records to detect Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Cloudflare DNS, email security tools and more. Adds ~100 ms per domain.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many sites to analyze in parallel.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Optional. Most sites work without a proxy. Use Apify Proxy if many sites block you.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "domains": [
    "shopify.com",
    "wordpress.org",
    "vercel.com"
  ],
  "checkDns": true,
  "maxConcurrency": 20,
  "proxyConfiguration": {
    "useApifyProxy": false
  }
}
```
