## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## US Healthcare Provider Finder (NPI Registry)

Search US doctors, dentists, clinics, pharmacies and other healthcare providers in the official National Provider Identifier (NPI) Registry and get clean, structured rows: name, specialty, practice address, phone, registration dates and more. Filter by specialty, state, city, ZIP code or name, and run it on a schedule to get a feed of providers you have not seen before.

The Actor reads the registry's public service at run time. It needs no API key, no proxies and no login.

### Who it is for

- **Sales and marketing teams** selling to healthcare practices (software, supplies, staffing, billing).
- **Recruiters and credentialing teams** building lists of providers by specialty and area.
- **Researchers and analysts** who need provider directories as a spreadsheet or JSON.
- **AI agents and automations** that need a dependable "find providers like this" tool.

### What you get

One row per provider, newest registrations first. Each row includes:

- `npi`, `name`, `providerType` (individual or organization), `credential`, `gender` (individuals)
- `specialty` (the provider's primary taxonomy) and the full list of `taxonomies` with codes, state and license
- `practiceAddress` and `mailingAddress` (street, city, state, ZIP, phone, fax) and a top-level `phone`
- `status`, `enumerationDate` (when the NPI was first registered), `lastUpdated`
- `authorizedOfficial` and `otherNames` for organizations, `identifiers` (such as state licenses)
- `url`: the provider's page in the NPI Registry

Example row (illustrative values):

```json
{
  "npi": "1000000001",
  "providerType": "individual",
  "name": "Jane Example, D.D.S.",
  "specialty": "Dentist, General Practice",
  "practiceAddress": { "line1": "100 Main St", "city": "AUSTIN", "state": "TX", "postalCode": "78746-7759", "phone": "512-555-0100" },
  "status": "Active",
  "enumerationDate": "2026-09-01",
  "url": "https://npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov/provider-view/1000000001"
}
```

### Input

| Field | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| `specialties` | Provider type or specialty as the registry words it (Dentist, Family Medicine, Pharmacy). A trailing `*` matches the rest of a word. Each entry is a separate search. |
| `states` | Two-letter state codes. Each state is a separate search. |
| `cities`, `postalCodes` | Practice-location city names and 5-digit ZIP codes. Each is a separate search. |
| `providerType` | Any, individuals only, or organizations only. |
| `firstName`, `lastName`, `organizationName` | Name filters. A trailing `*` matches the rest of a name. |
| `enumeratedSince` | Keep only providers first registered on or after this date (YYYY-MM-DD). Good for finding new providers. |
| `onlyNew` | Deliver only providers this Actor has not already delivered for this exact search. Run it on a schedule for alerts. |
| `maxResults` | Stop after this many providers. Default 100, up to 10,000. |

You must give at least one filter besides the state (a specialty, city, ZIP code or name). The registry does not accept a state on its own. The filters multiply: 2 specialties in 3 states is 6 searches, and one run can make at most 60.

### Alerts on a schedule

1. Set `onlyNew` to true and fill in your search.
2. Schedule the Actor (for example weekly) from the Apify Console.
3. Each run delivers only providers you have not seen for that search. If a run stops early because of your maximum cost per run, the providers it did not deliver are delivered by the next run.

The "already delivered" list is kept in a storage called `npi-provider-finder-state` in your own Apify account, with one list per distinct search.

### Pricing

You pay per provider delivered (pay per event), plus Apify's normal platform usage for the run. See the Pricing tab for the current price. Set a maximum cost per run in the run options to cap spending: the Actor stops as soon as the cap is reached.

### Limits and good to know

- **One search returns at most 1,200 providers.** That is the registry's own limit. If a search hits it, the run status says so; add a city, ZIP code or a narrower specialty to see everyone.
- The registry cannot sort or filter by date. "New" providers are found by comparing against what the Actor delivered before, or by `enumeratedSince` within the 1,200 results of each search.
- Data is shown as the registry publishes it. Providers update their own records, and some records are out of date. Check the registry page before relying on a record.
- This is a directory of public business information, not a verification of licenses or credentials.
- If the registry is down or slow, the Actor retries a few times and then stops with a clear message.

### Data source and disclaimer

Provider data comes from the public NPPES NPI Registry API of the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (cms.hhs.gov). This Actor is not affiliated with or endorsed by CMS or any government agency.

# Actor input Schema

## `specialties` (type: `array`):

Provider type or specialty as the registry words it, for example Dentist, Family Medicine, Cardiology, Pharmacy. A trailing \* matches the rest of a word (Dent\*). Each entry is a separate search.

## `states` (type: `array`):

Two-letter state codes such as TX or CA. Leave empty to search every state (then add a city, ZIP code or name).

## `cities` (type: `array`):

Practice-location cities. Each city is a separate search.

## `postalCodes` (type: `array`):

Five-digit ZIP codes of the practice location. Each ZIP code is a separate search.

## `providerType` (type: `string`):

Individuals are people (doctors, dentists, nurses). Organizations are clinics, hospitals, pharmacies and groups.

## `firstName` (type: `string`):

Individuals only. A trailing \* matches the rest of a name.

## `lastName` (type: `string`):

Individuals only. A trailing \* matches the rest of a name.

## `organizationName` (type: `string`):

Organizations only. A trailing \* matches the rest of a name.

## `enumeratedSince` (type: `string`):

Keep only providers first registered on or after this date, written YYYY-MM-DD. Good for finding newly registered providers.

## `onlyNew` (type: `boolean`):

Turn this on and run the Actor on a schedule to get an alert-style feed. The Actor remembers which providers it already delivered for this exact search.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Stop after this many providers. You pay per provider delivered, so this also caps your cost.
