## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

## SEO Audit Tool: On-Page SEO Checker and Website Crawler

**SEO audit of any URL or a whole site, $0.005 per page: titles, meta descriptions, headings, canonical, noindex,
hreflang, Open Graph and Twitter cards, schema.org JSON-LD, image alt text, broken links, redirects, response time
and page weight. Every page gets a 0-100 score and a prioritized list of issues, each with a fix. A site summary
finds duplicate titles and descriptions, broken links and the issues that hit the most pages.**

Deterministic rules, no browser and no AI: the same page always gets the same verdict, so you can run it on a
schedule and compare. Works for SEO freelancers and agencies, developers adding an SEO check to CI or monitoring,
and AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others through the [Apify MCP server](https://mcp.apify.com)) that need
facts about a page before giving advice.

### What it checks

| Area | Checks |
|---|---|
| Indexability | HTTP status, redirect chain (every hop), temporary redirects, robots meta tag, `X-Robots-Tag` header (generic and Googlebot/Bingbot), canonical (HTML and `Link` header; missing, multiple, invalid, pointing elsewhere), **indexable yes/no with the reason** |
| Content | Title (missing, empty, multiple, under 30 / over 60 characters), meta description (missing, multiple, under 70 / over 160), word count and thin content, text-to-HTML ratio, charset, doctype, favicon, URL length and case |
| Headings | H1 missing / multiple / empty, skipped heading levels, full heading outline |
| Links | Internal / external / nofollow counts, links without anchor text, pages without internal links, **broken links** (opt-in) |
| Images | Images without `alt` (decorative `alt=""` is fine), images without width/height (layout shift) |
| Social | Open Graph (`og:title`, `og:description`, `og:image`), Twitter card |
| Structured data | JSON-LD blocks parsed, `@type` values (including `@graph`), JSON errors with line and column, microdata and RDFa types |
| International | `<html lang>`, hreflang codes validated, duplicates, self-reference, `x-default` |
| Performance | Server response time, HTML size, compression (gzip/brotli) |
| Security / mobile | HTTPS, mixed content (http:// images, scripts, styles on https pages), viewport meta tag |

Site summary (per site, in the key-value store): average score, score distribution, indexable vs non-indexable
pages with reasons, **duplicate titles and meta descriptions**, top issues ranked by how many pages they affect,
broken links with the pages they are on, slowest pages, robots.txt status and declared sitemaps, crawl coverage.

### Quick start

Audit one site, 10 pages (the Actor's example; about 15 seconds, about $0.05):

```json
{"startUrls": ["https://www.python.org/"], "maxPages": 10}
```

Audit a list of URLs without crawling, with a broken-link check:

```json
{"startUrls": ["https://example.com/pricing", "https://example.com/blog/post-1"], "crawl": false, "checkBrokenLinks": true}
```

One dataset item per page (abridged):

```json
{
  "url": "https://www.example.com/news",
  "finalUrl": "https://www.example.com/news",
  "status": "ok",
  "httpStatus": 200,
  "redirectChain": [],
  "responseTimeMs": 212,
  "htmlBytes": 397198,
  "compressed": true,
  "title": "Example News - Breaking news, video and the latest top stories from around the world",
  "titleLength": 85,
  "metaDescriptionLength": 249,
  "h1": ["News"],
  "canonical": "https://www.example.com/news",
  "robots": {"meta": null, "xRobotsTag": []},
  "indexable": true,
  "indexability": "indexable",
  "structuredData": {"jsonLdBlocks": 1, "jsonLdTypes": ["NewsMediaOrganization", "WebPage"], "jsonLdErrors": []},
  "images": {"total": 48, "missingAlt": 24, "emptyAlt": 0, "missingDimensions": 48},
  "links": {"internal": 241, "external": 7, "nofollowInternal": 0},
  "wordCount": 1714,
  "score": 80,
  "categoryScores": {"content": 84, "images": 84, "indexability": 100, "international": 96},
  "issues": [
    {"id": "TITLE_TOO_LONG", "severity": "medium", "category": "content",
     "message": "The title is 85 characters (over 60).",
     "fix": "Shorten the title to about 60 characters so it is not cut off in results."},
    {"id": "IMAGES_MISSING_ALT", "severity": "medium", "category": "images",
     "message": "24 of 48 images have no alt attribute.",
     "fix": "Add alt text to informative images (alt=\"\" for decorative ones)."}
  ]
}
```

The site summary is at `SITE_SUMMARY` in the run's key-value store (also linked in the run's Output tab).

### Score

Each page starts at 100. Each issue subtracts by severity: **critical 30** (error status, noindex, missing title),
**high 12** (missing meta description or H1, broken links, mixed content, no HTTPS, no viewport...), **medium 6**,
**low 2**. The floor is 0. Category scores use the same weights doubled, per category. Issues are sorted most severe
first, so `issues[0]` is what to fix first.

### Input

| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| `startUrls` | (required) | URLs or domains to audit (HTTPS assumed for domains). Up to 10,000. |
| `crawl` | `true` | Follow links to other pages on the same site. |
| `maxPages` | `50` | Pages per site, start URLs included. Caps the cost per site. |
| `maxDepth` | `5` | Clicks away from the start URL. |
| `includeUrlRegex` / `excludeUrlRegex` | | Crawl only / skip URLs matching a regular expression. |
| `checkBrokenLinks` | `false` | Check every link found (HEAD, GET fallback), once per unique URL per run. |
| `maxLinkChecks` | `500` | Upper limit on links checked per run. |
| `saveSiteSummary` | `true` | Write the per-site summary to the key-value store. |
| `maxConcurrency` | `5` | Pages fetched in parallel (each host is still paced). |

### Pricing in plain words

**$0.005 per page audited** ($5 per 1,000 pages), **$0.0005 per link checked** when you turn on the broken-link
check, and a $0.001 start fee per run (at the default 512 MB). A 100-page site audit costs about $0.50; with 2,000
unique links checked, $1.50 more. Not charged: invalid URLs, sites that don't exist or don't answer, pages blocked
by robots.txt, non-HTML files (PDFs, images). Pages answering 404 or 500 are charged because they are findings.
Set a maximum total charge on the run and the Actor stops before exceeding it, still writing the summary.

### Crawling rules

- Only the site you give: the start URL's host plus the host it redirects to (for example `example.com` to
  `www.example.com`). Other hosts are never crawled, only link-checked if you ask.
- robots.txt is always obeyed. The Actor identifies itself as
  `TinplateSEOAudit/1.0 (+https://tinplatelabs.github.io)`; to audit a page your robots.txt blocks, add
  `User-agent: TinplateSEOAudit` / `Allow: /`.
- Requests to one host are paced (at most 4 per second, Crawl-delay honoured up to 3 s).
- Only public websites: hosts that resolve to private or reserved addresses are refused.
- Pages are read as served (no JavaScript rendering). Sites that build their content in the browser show what
  search engines see before rendering.

### Errors

Pages that could not be audited become records with `status: "error"` and `error.code`: `INVALID_URL`,
`SITE_NOT_FOUND`, `SITE_UNREACHABLE`, `TIMEOUT`, `PRIVATE_ADDRESS`, `BLOCKED_BY_ROBOTS`, `NOT_HTML`,
`SPENDING_LIMIT_REACHED`. The message says what to do. None of them is charged.

### Memory

512 MB (the default) handles sites up to 10,000 pages. Raising memory doesn't make crawls faster, because
per-host politeness limits the pace; more `maxConcurrency` helps only across several sites.

# Actor input Schema

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

Pages or sites to audit, one per line: full URLs (<code>https://www.example.com/pricing</code>) or domains (<code>example.com</code>, HTTPS assumed). With <b>Crawl the site</b> on, each start URL is also the starting point of a same-site crawl. Max 10,000 per run.

## `crawl` (type: `boolean`):

Follow links from the start URLs to other pages on the same site (same host, or the host the start URL redirects to) and audit them too, up to <b>Max pages per site</b>. Turn off to audit only the URLs you list.

## `maxPages` (type: `integer`):

Stop crawling a site after this many pages (start URLs included). Each audited page is one $0.005 charge, so this also caps the cost per site. The site summary says how many pages were left.

## `maxDepth` (type: `integer`):

How many clicks away from a start URL the crawl may go. 0 audits only the start URLs; 1 adds the pages they link to.

## `includeUrlRegex` (type: `string`):

Crawl only URLs where this Python regular expression matches anywhere, e.g. <code>/blog/</code>. Start URLs are always audited.

## `excludeUrlRegex` (type: `string`):

Don't crawl URLs where this Python regular expression matches, e.g. <code>/tag/|/author/|?page=</code>.

## `checkBrokenLinks` (type: `boolean`):

Request every link found on audited pages (internal and external; HEAD, falling back to GET) and list those answering 4xx/5xx or not answering in <code>brokenLinks</code>. Each unique URL is checked once per run and costs $0.0005. Links to sites whose robots.txt forbids it are not checked.

## `maxLinkChecks` (type: `integer`):

Upper limit on unique links checked per run when <b>Check for broken links</b> is on (caps the link-check cost at $0.0005 each). Links beyond it are counted in <code>linksNotChecked</code>.

## `saveSiteSummary` (type: `boolean`):

Store one summary per site in the run's key-value store under <code>SITE_SUMMARY</code>: average score, top issues, duplicate titles and meta descriptions, broken links with the pages they are on, non-indexable pages, slowest pages, crawl coverage. Free.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many pages are fetched at the same time across all sites. Requests to any one host are always paced (at most 4 per second; robots.txt Crawl-delay honoured up to 3 s).
