## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Website Tech Stack Detector — CMS, E-commerce, Analytics, CRM, Chat, Hosting & Email Provider

Paste a list of websites and find out **what each one is built with**: **CMS and site builder, e-commerce platform, payment and review apps, analytics and tag managers, ad pixels, marketing automation / CRM / email marketing, live chat and helpdesk, cookie consent, JavaScript frameworks, hosting / CDN / web server — and the company's email provider** (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365…) from MX records.

**140+ technologies in 39 categories**, one clean row per domain, ready for filtering in Excel or your CRM. A BuiltWith / Wappalyzer alternative for **lead generation and market research**.

### How to run it in 3 steps

1. **Add your input.** In **Websites or domains** paste domains or homepage URLs, one per line — e.g. `allbirds.com`. The form is already filled with a working example, so you can skip this step for a first try.
2. **Press Start.** The prefilled run returns 3 results in about 4 s and costs about **$0.006**. Set **Max results (cost cap)** to cap the cost of bigger runs; you only pay for websites actually delivered.
3. **Get the data.** Open the **Output** tab and export JSON, CSV or Excel — or run it from the API, Make, Zapier, n8n or an AI agent (see below).

### Features

- **Lead-gen columns out of the box:** `cms`, `ecommercePlatform`, `analytics`, `marketingAutomation`, `liveChat`, `hosting`, `emailProvider`, `jsFramework` — plus the full `technologies` list and `technologiesByCategory`.
- **Email provider detection** via MX records — know whether to pitch a Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 add-on.
- **Careful fingerprints:** our own rules prefer precision over noise (e.g. a file called `bootstrap.js` is *not* Bootstrap).
- **HTTP only, no browser:** pure HTTP, hundreds of sites per minute; offline sites are free.
- **Pay per website:** $2 per 1,000 analyzed sites.

### Use cases

- **Technographic lead lists:** all Shopify stores using Klaviyo, all WordPress sites without a cookie banner, all HubSpot users…
- **Sales qualification:** enrich a CRM or Google Maps export with the prospect's stack.
- **Competitor analysis:** what do the leaders in a niche use?
- **Agency prospecting:** find sites on outdated platforms (Joomla, Magento 1, IIS…).

### Input

Turn on **Include detection details** to get `technologyDetails` with the category and evidence (html, script, meta, header, cookie, dns) for every technology.

### Use with AI agents (MCP), LangChain, RAG & the API

This actor is a ready-made **tool for AI agents**: an LLM can call it, wait for the run and read clean JSON back.

**MCP server (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, any MCP client)** — add Apify's hosted MCP server with this actor enabled as a tool:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "apify": {
      "url": "https://mcp.apify.com/?tools=torix33/website-tech-stack-detector",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer <APIFY_TOKEN>" }
    }
  }
}
```

**LangChain / LangGraph** (`pip install langchain-apify`, set `APIFY_API_TOKEN`):

```python
import json
from langchain_apify import ApifyActorsTool, ApifyWrapper
from langchain_core.documents import Document
## 1) give the actor to an agent as a tool
tool = ApifyActorsTool("torix33/website-tech-stack-detector")
## 2) or load results as Documents for a RAG index
loader = ApifyWrapper().call_actor(
    actor_id="torix33/website-tech-stack-detector",
    run_input={"websites": ["allbirds.com", "hubspot.com", "apify.com"], "checkEmailProvider": True, "includeEvidence": False, "maxConcurrency": 30},
    dataset_mapping_function=lambda item: Document(page_content=json.dumps(item, ensure_ascii=False), metadata={"url": item.get("url")}),
)
docs = loader.load()
```

**REST API — one synchronous call, dataset items in the response:**

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/torix33~website-tech-stack-detector/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=<APIFY_TOKEN>" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"websites": ["allbirds.com", "hubspot.com", "apify.com"], "checkEmailProvider": true, "includeEvidence": false, "maxConcurrency": 30}'
```

Also works with the Apify Python/JS clients, **Make, Zapier, n8n**, Google Sheets, webhooks and schedules. Export as JSON, CSV, Excel, XML or RSS.

**RAG tip:** Ideal as an agent tool for lead qualification: "is this prospect on Shopify and HubSpot?" — answer from `ecommercePlatform` and `marketingAutomation`.

### Pricing

- **$2.00 per 1,000 websites** ($0.002 per website).
- The prefilled input returns 3 websites → **$0.006**.
- Example: 1,000 websites → $2.00; 10,000 → $20.00. Set **Max results (cost cap)** to limit any run.

Failed sites are free.

### Limitations

- Detection uses the homepage HTML, response headers, cookies and DNS MX records. Technologies loaded only after login or deep inside an app may not be visible.

### FAQ

**Is it a BuiltWith or Wappalyzer alternative?**
Yes, for bulk lists: it fingerprints the homepage HTML, headers, cookies and DNS MX records and costs $2 per 1,000 sites.

**Does it detect Google Workspace or Microsoft 365?**
Yes. `emailProvider` comes from the domain's MX records.

**Why is a technology missing?**
Tools loaded only after login or deep inside an app are not visible on the public homepage.

# Actor input Schema

## `websites` (type: `array`):

One per line: <code>acme.com</code>, <code>www.acme.co.uk</code> or full URLs. Paste thousands at once (e.g. a website column from a lead list).

## `checkEmailProvider` (type: `boolean`):

Look up MX records to tell Google Workspace from Microsoft 365 and others.

## `includeEvidence` (type: `boolean`):

Add <code>technologyDetails</code> with the category and evidence (html, script, header, cookie, dns) for each technology.

## `includeFailedSites` (type: `boolean`):

Add free <code>status: "failed"</code> rows for sites that are offline or block bots.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Stop after this many analyzed websites. <code>0</code> = no limit.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

Websites analyzed in parallel.

## `requestTimeoutSecs` (type: `integer`):

Give up on a homepage after this long.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Not needed for most sites. Enable Apify Proxy if many sites answer 403 to cloud servers.
