# Website Technology Detector: CMS, Frameworks, Analytics (`touchrock/tech-detector`) Actor

Find the technologies behind a list of websites: CMS, e-commerce platform, JavaScript framework, analytics and ad tags, CDN, hosting and web server, with versions when visible. Pay per domain with results; failed sites are free.

## Pricing

from $2.00 / 1,000 domain with technologies

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Website Technology Detector: CMS, Frameworks, Analytics

Give it a list of domains or URLs and get, for each one, the technologies its public page shows: CMS and site
builder, e-commerce platform, JavaScript framework, analytics and advertising tags, CDN, hosting, web server,
live chat, payments and more, with the version when the site exposes it.

Use it for lead lists (for example "all Shopify stores in my list"), competitor research, or a quick audit of your own
sites.

### How it works

- It reads the page you give (a bare domain reads its homepage over https) with one plain request, like a browser
  without JavaScript: response headers, cookie names, `<meta name="generator">`, script URLs and HTML markers.
- It matches them against 130 signatures written by Touchrock for this Actor.
- Every technology comes with its **evidence** (for example `header server`, `meta generator`, `script`, `html`, or
  `implied by WooCommerce`), so you can see why it was reported.
- No login, no cookies sent, no crawling beyond the page you give.

**Limits, honestly:**

- Technologies that only appear after JavaScript runs can be missed.
- Sites behind a bot challenge page show only what the challenge page reveals (usually the CDN). In our test, drupal.org
  answered with such a page and only Fastly was detected.
- The list covers 130 common technologies, not every product on the web.

### Pricing

**$2.00 per 1,000 domains** ($0.002 each), pay per event, charged once per domain **only when at least one technology
is detected**.
**Never charged:** invalid entries, sites that fail (DNS, timeout, HTTP 4xx/5xx, not a web page), sites where nothing
is detected, and domains beyond your maximum cost per run (they are not requested). Apify also bills its usual tiny
"Actor start" event.

### Input example

```json
{
    "domains": ["wordpress.org", "nextjs.org", "https://www.allbirds.com/"]
}
```

### Output example (one dataset row, shortened)

```json
{
    "input": "https://nextjs.org/",
    "domain": "nextjs.org",
    "ok": true,
    "finalUrl": "https://nextjs.org/",
    "httpStatus": 200,
    "technologyCount": 3,
    "technologies": [
        { "name": "Vercel", "category": "Hosting", "version": null, "website": "https://vercel.com", "evidence": ["header x-vercel-id", "header server"] },
        { "name": "Next.js", "category": "JavaScript framework", "version": null, "website": "https://nextjs.org", "evidence": ["html"] },
        { "name": "React", "category": "JavaScript library", "version": null, "website": "https://react.dev", "evidence": ["implied by Next.js"] }
    ],
    "byCategory": { "Hosting": ["Vercel"], "JavaScript framework": ["Next.js"], "JavaScript library": ["React"] },
    "checkedAt": "2026-10-23T22:30:16.862Z",
    "charged": true,
    "error": null
}
```

A site that fails or shows nothing known has `charged: false` and the reason in `error`.
The `OUTPUT` record of the run has the totals.

### Good use

Only public `http` and `https` pages; private networks and `localhost` are refused. You are responsible for using
the results in line with each website's terms and the law.

### Use from the API

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/touchrock~tech-detector/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=<YOUR_TOKEN>" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"domains": ["wordpress.org"]}'
```

### Support

Open an issue on the Actor's Issues tab; we answer within a few days.

# Actor input Schema

## `domains` (type: `array`):

Up to 1,000 per run. A bare domain (example.com) reads its homepage over https; a URL reads that page. Private and local addresses are refused.

## `timeoutSecs` (type: `integer`):

A site that takes longer fails and is not charged. 5-60.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "domains": [
    "wordpress.org",
    "nextjs.org"
  ],
  "timeoutSecs": 20
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

No description

## `summary` (type: `string`):

No description

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "domains": [
        "wordpress.org",
        "nextjs.org"
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("touchrock/tech-detector").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
Clients without OAuth support can send an `Authorization: Bearer <APIFY_API_TOKEN>` header instead, using a token from API & Integrations in Apify Console (https://console.apify.com/settings/integrations).
