## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Website Tech Stack Detector: a Wappalyzer and BuiltWith alternative at $0.002 per site

**Paste a list of domains; get the CMS, ecommerce platform, frameworks, analytics, CDN, hosting, payment and marketing tools each site runs, with the evidence for every detection.**

307 technologies across 33 categories, detected from one plain HTTP request per homepage. No browser, no proxies, no AI guessing: every result comes with the header, script URL, cookie or HTML snippet that triggered it, plus a confidence score. Sites that fail or block us are not charged.

### Sample output

Real results from a run on Oct 5, 2026:

| Site | CMS / Ecommerce | Frameworks | Hosting / CDN | Analytics and marketing |

| `categoriesSummary` | Technology names grouped by category, easy to filter in a spreadsheet |
| `fetchedAt` | When it was checked |
| `error` | `null`, or `invalid_url`, `robots_disallowed`, `http_403` (etc.), `not_html`, `fetch_failed: CODE` |

**Categories covered:** analytics (23 technologies), CMS (21), marketing automation (20), payment (18), hosting (18), advertising (17), JavaScript frameworks (16) and libraries (15), chat and support (15), page builders (14), ecommerce (13), security, web servers, CDN, web frameworks, A/B testing, UI frameworks, fonts, privacy and consent, monitoring, programming languages, social, tag managers, authentication, video, SEO, CRM and more. Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, WordPress, HubSpot, Klaviyo, Stripe, Intercom, Segment, Hotjar, Google Analytics, React and Next.js are all included.

### Quick start

Press **Start** with the prefilled form: shopify.com, wordpress.org and vercel.com, about $0.004, done in seconds.

Check a lead list:

```json
{ "urls": ["allbirds.com", "gymshark.com", "techcrunch.com", "webflow.com", "squarespace.com"] }
```

Large list, faster, smaller rows:

```json
{ "urls": ["example1.com", "example2.com", "..."], "concurrency": 15, "includeEvidence": false, "maxSites": 10000 }
```

### Pricing

**$0.002 per site analyzed** ($2 per 1,000 sites). No subscription.

| You check | You pay |
|---|---|
| 3 sites (the prefilled Start) | $0.006 |
| 1,000 sites | $2.00 |
| 10,000 sites | $20 |

**Not charged:** DNS errors, timeouts, refused connections, 4xx/5xx answers (including bot-blocking 403s), non-HTML responses, invalid URLs and sites whose robots.txt disallows us. Those rows still appear with an `error` so you know what happened. No proxy, browser or AI costs are added, and your run's maximum-charge limit is respected.

### Use with the API, n8n, Make, Zapier, Clay or AI agents

**API** (returns the rows in one call):

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/transparent_meteorite~website-tech-stack-detector/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"urls":["gymshark.com","allbirds.com"]}'
```

**Python**

```python
from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN")
run = client.actor("transparent_meteorite/website-tech-stack-detector").call(run_input={"urls": ["gymshark.com", "allbirds.com"]})
for site in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
    print(site["url"], [t["name"] for t in site["technologies"]])
```

- **Clay:** add an HTTP API column that sends each row's domain to the run-sync endpoint and returns the stack, then filter your table to "uses Shopify" or "no analytics".
- **n8n, Make, Zapier:** use the Apify app's "Run Actor" step with actor `transparent_meteorite/website-tech-stack-detector`, then write `categoriesSummary` into your CRM.
- **AI agents (MCP):** connect `https://mcp.apify.com?tools=transparent_meteorite/website-tech-stack-detector` to Claude, Cursor or any MCP client, and ask "what is acme.com built with?".

### Use cases

- **Lead generation and sales prospecting:** find every Shopify, WooCommerce or Webflow site in a list, or every site without analytics, and pitch the right offer.
- **Agencies:** audit a prospect's stack before the first call.
- **Competitive research:** see what CMS, payment and marketing tools competitors run.
- **CRM enrichment:** add technology columns to accounts in bulk.
- **Market sizing:** count platform share across a list of domains in your niche.

### FAQ

#### How can I tell what technology a website uses?

Add its domain to `urls` and run the actor. Each result lists the detected technologies with a category, version when exposed, a confidence score and the evidence.

#### How do I check whether a website is built on Shopify or WordPress?

Run the domains and look at the `Ecommerce` and `CMS` entries in `categoriesSummary`. Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Magento and BigCommerce are all detected.

#### Is this a free Wappalyzer or BuiltWith alternative?

It is a pay-per-use alternative: $0.002 per site that loads, nothing for sites that fail, no subscription. It looks at the homepage only and does not run JavaScript, so a browser-based tool can find things this one cannot. We have not benchmarked other tools and make no claims about them.

#### How accurate is the tech stack detection?

Every detection is a deterministic rule with visible evidence, so you can check any result. Confidence starts at 60 for one signal and rises with each extra independent signal, plus 10 when a version is read. Our test suite checks 22 real sites (Shopify, Allbirds, TechCrunch, Drupal, Vercel, Stripe, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, HubSpot, GitLab and others) against hand-verified results, and also checks for known false positives.

#### Can I look up thousands of websites at once?

Yes. Put up to 10,000 sites in one run and raise `concurrency` to 15-20. Each request goes to a different site.

#### Does it collect personal data?

No. It reads public homepage HTML and headers only. No IP addresses, emails or cookie values are stored.

### Limitations

- **Homepage only**, one request plus one retry. Tools used only on inner pages, checkout or app subdomains are not seen.
- **No JavaScript execution.** Tools injected at runtime by a tag manager, and fully client-rendered sites with no framework hint in the HTML, are under-reported.
- **Bot protection:** sites that answer non-browser clients with 403/429 or a challenge page come back with an error, uncharged.
- **Redirects:** detection describes the page we landed on (`finalUrl`), which can be a regional or different domain.
- **Server-side stacks behind a CDN** that strips headers cannot be seen from outside. Versions appear only when the site exposes them.
- The first 2 MB of HTML is read. Sites whose robots.txt disallows all bots are skipped when `respectRobots` is on.

# Actor input Schema

## `urls` (type: `array`):

Websites to check, one per line. Bare domains (example.com) or full URLs both work; duplicates are removed. Only the homepage is fetched.

## `maxSites` (type: `integer`):

Upper bound on sites processed in this run. At $0.002 per analyzed site, 1,000 sites = $2. Failed and blocked sites are not charged.

## `respectRobots` (type: `boolean`):

Skip sites whose robots.txt disallows the homepage for our user agent (WebsiteTechStackDetector). Skipped sites are not charged.

## `includeEvidence` (type: `boolean`):

Add the header, script URL, cookie name or HTML snippet behind each detection, so you can check any result yourself.

## `concurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many sites to fetch in parallel (each request goes to a different site). 5 is a good default; up to 20 for large lists.
