## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## SEC Filings MCP Server

Give your AI agent direct access to **SEC EDGAR** — the official US securities filing system — so it can answer questions about public companies with real filings instead of recalled training data.

Every response includes a `source` URL pointing at the official SEC document, so the agent can cite where each fact came from.

### What it answers

- *"What did NVIDIA report as revenue for the last four quarters?"*
- *"Show me Apple's most recent 10-K."*
- *"Which companies mentioned 'supply chain disruption' in their annual reports this year?"*
- *"Is this company actually SEC-registered, and under what legal name?"*
- *"Who reported the largest revenue in 2024?"*

### Tools

| Tool | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| `find_company` | Resolve a ticker or company name to its SEC identifiers |
| `company_overview` | Registration details: legal name, former names, incorporation state, industry code, address |
| `list_filings` | Recent filings, newest first, filterable by form type (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, DEF 14A) |
| `get_financial_metric` | A reported financial figure over time, straight from XBRL data |
| `search_filings` | Full-text search across the actual text of filings, from 2001 onward |
| `compare_metric_across_companies` | Compare one metric across every company that reported it in a period |

### Why the data is trustworthy

Everything comes from `data.sec.gov` and `sec.gov` — the SEC's own systems, filed under penalty of law by the companies themselves. This server does not scrape third-party aggregators, and it does not interpret or summarise. Values are as-reported, each tied to the filing it came from.

Financial figures come from XBRL, the structured data companies are required to file alongside their statements. If a company restated a figure, you will see both the original and the restatement with their filing dates.

### Connecting

The server speaks the Model Context Protocol over streamable HTTP. Point any MCP-compatible client at the standby URL with `/mcp`, using your Apify token as a bearer token.

### Pricing

$0.004 per tool call. No subscription, no minimum. You pay for calls your agent actually makes.

### Limits and honesty

- Coverage is **US SEC filings only**. Private companies and non-US issuers without US listings are not in EDGAR.
- Full-text search covers 2001 onward; older filings are listed but not text-searchable.
- Financial tags use US-GAAP naming. If a metric returns nothing, the company may report it under a different tag — `Revenues` versus `RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax`, for example.
- This server reports what was filed. It is not investment advice and makes no judgement about whether a filing is accurate.

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("tributarydata/sec-filings-mcp").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
## MCP server setup
```json

The hosted server signs you in with OAuth on first connect, so no API token belongs in this config. Clients without OAuth support can send an `Authorization: Bearer <APIFY_API_TOKEN>` header instead, using a token from API & Integrations in Apify Console (https://console.apify.com/settings/integrations).
