## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

Check **gluten-free food claims** against the **ingredient list**. The **Gluten-Free Claim Checker** flags products labeled **'gluten-free', 'no gluten' or 'without gluten'** that list **wheat, barley, rye, spelt, malt or other gluten grains**, **wheat starch without the FDA asterisk statement**, **unnamed flour**, **gluten test values over 20 ppm**, and EU wording problems like **'low gluten'** or **'suitable for coeliacs' on its own**, under **FDA 21 CFR 101.91** and **EU Regulation 828/2014**. Works with **grocery scraper output and Open Food Facts data**. Click **Start** with the prefilled example to see it work.

> This is an automated comparison of the claims and ingredients you supply, not a legal determination or a gluten test. It can't measure gluten or see package images. A clean result doesn't mean a product is safe for people with coeliac disease. Not legal or medical advice; every row carries this disclaimer and a timestamp.

### What does the Gluten-Free Claim Checker do?

- ✅ **Gluten grains in gluten-free products**: wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut, durum, semolina, farro, triticale, bulgur, couscous, seitan, malt and malt extract (21 CFR 101.91(a)(3)).
- ✅ **Wheat starch or 'Contains wheat'** without the exact FDA statement 'The wheat has been processed to allow this food to meet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for gluten-free foods' (21 CFR 101.91(b)(3)).
- ✅ **Unnamed 'flour'** in gluten-free products, and **gluten values** of 20 ppm or more (US) or over 20 mg/kg (EU); 'very low gluten' over 100 mg/kg.
- ✅ **EU wording**: 'low gluten' or 'reduced gluten' (not permitted), 'suitable for coeliacs' without 'gluten-free', and oats not stated as specially produced (Regulation 828/2014).
- ✅ Info notes for fermented or hydrolyzed ingredients, oats (US) and 'may contain' statements.
- ✅ Skips false friends: buckwheat, wheatgrass, rice malt, maltodextrin, 'free from wheat, barley and rye', 'not gluten free' and 'gluten-free options available'.
- ✅ Output per row: `market`, `claimFound`, `glutenSources`, `glutenPpm`, `riskLevel`, `issueCount`, `issues` (`ruleId`, `severity`, `message`, `quote`, `sourceUrl`, `fixHint`), `checkedAt` and a disclaimer.

### Who is it for?

- **Food brands and retailers** checking product pages before launch.
- **Grocery e-commerce and marketplace teams** screening thousands of SKUs.
- **Nutrition and allergen data companies** cleaning scraped or Open Food Facts data.
- **Coeliac associations and researchers** auditing claims at scale.

### How to check gluten-free claims against ingredients

1. Click **Start** with the prefilled example (cookies with barley malt, a pizza base with wheat starch, a clean brownie mix and an EU 'low gluten' bread).
2. Replace the input with your own: `title`, `ingredients` and optional `claims`, `allergens`, `glutenPpm` and `market`.
3. Or enter a **Dataset ID** from an Amazon, Walmart, Instacart, Kroger, Tesco or Open Food Facts scraper. Common fields are detected automatically; use **Field map** for nested ones.
4. Turn on **Only save rows with findings** to skip clean rows; you only pay for saved rows.
5. Export results as CSV, Excel or JSON, or fetch them through the API.

### How much does it cost to check gluten-free claims?

This Actor uses pay-per-event pricing: **$0.002 per product saved** plus a **$0.00005 start fee per run**, plus small platform usage paid by you (a few hundredths of a cent for small runs). That's about **$2.00 for 1,000 products** and **$20.00 for 10,000** plus usage. With **Only save rows with findings** on, rows without findings aren't saved or charged. You can set a maximum cost per run in the run options.

### Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

- Run it and get results in one call: `https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/ultimatemc~gluten-free-claim-checker/run-sync-get-dataset-items`
- Use it from AI agents through the Apify MCP server: `https://mcp.apify.com?tools=ultimatemc/gluten-free-claim-checker`
- Schedule it after a daily scraper run, send flagged rows to Slack or email with webhooks, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets.
- Chain it after any grocery scraper by passing the scraper's dataset ID.

### How it works

Checks are deterministic rules written from FDA's gluten-free labeling rule (21 CFR 101.91, as amended in 2020 for fermented and hydrolyzed foods) and Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 828/2014, checked on 2026-11-03. Ingredient lists are split into ingredients and matched against gluten-grain names in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. No AI and no external calls.

### FAQ

#### Are oats allowed in gluten-free food?

In the US oats aren't a gluten-containing grain under 101.91, but the whole food must test below 20 ppm. In the EU, oats in gluten-free food must be specially produced to avoid contamination and contain no more than 20 mg/kg gluten.

#### Is wheat starch allowed?

It can be, if the food stays below 20 ppm. In the US, 'wheat' in the ingredients or a 'Contains wheat' statement then needs an asterisk and the exact FDA statement.

#### Does it test gluten?

No. It compares claims with the ingredients and any test value you supply.

#### Is it AI?

No. It's a fixed set of rules, so the same input always gives the same result.

### Limitations

- Ingredients and text only; no lab testing.
- Ingredient names in languages other than EN, DE, FR, ES and IT may be missed.
- Cross-contact can't be detected from text.

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});

// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "products": [
        {

The hosted server signs you in with OAuth on first connect, so no API token belongs in this config. Clients without OAuth support can send an `Authorization: Bearer <APIFY_API_TOKEN>` header instead, using a token from API & Integrations in Apify Console (https://console.apify.com/settings/integrations).
