## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Text to Speech: 28 Natural English AI Voices (MP3, WAV)

**Price: $10 per million characters** ($0.01 per 1,000), plus a tiny per-run start fee.

Turn English text (up to 5,000 characters per run) into natural speech with one of 28 American or British voices. You choose:

- the voice;
- the speed (50–200%);
- the format: MP3, Opus, WAV or FLAC.

The audio file is saved in the run's key-value store, and the dataset item links to it.

Built on Kokoro-82M, an open model (Apache-2.0) known for natural prosody at small size.

### What you get

```json
{
  "audio_url": "https://api.apify.com/v2/key-value-stores/<store>/records/audio.mp3",
  "audio_key": "audio.mp3",
  "format": "mp3",
  "content_type": "audio/mpeg",
  "sample_rate": 24000,
  "duration_seconds": 6.1,
  "characters": 77,
  "voice": "bm_george",
  "billed_characters": 77
}
```

### Input

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `text` | English text, up to 5,000 characters (required). Blank lines separate paragraphs. |
| `voice` | `af_*` / `am_*` American female/male, `bf_*` / `bm_*` British female/male (default `af_heart`) |
| `speed_percent` | 50–200 (default 100) |
| `format` | `mp3` (default), `opus`, `wav`, `flac` |

Numbers, currency and common abbreviations are read naturally (`$0.01` is spoken as "one cent").

### Pricing

Pay per event: **character**, per character of input text. A failed run charges no characters, only Apify's standard run-start fee ($0.00005).

### Privacy

The text is never stored or logged by the speech service. Its copy of the audio is deleted within an hour; the copy in your run's storage follows your Apify retention settings.
