## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## European Medicines Agency publication metadata

Official general information/guidance and news JSON snapshots; guidance section includes general information pages. No medicine-product listings, binaries, advice or archive completeness guarantee.

### Source and coverage

Combines two official, twice-daily machine-readable JSON snapshots. Guidance is a section label for the general report, which also contains general agency information. Dates normalize DD/MM/YYYY; raw date text and snapshot timestamp are preserved. Missing update dates stay null. Medicine-product listings and related product data are excluded. Category matching is exact. EMA acknowledgement, source URL and retrieved month must accompany reused copies; do not place source links alongside advertising.

Fixed official sources:

- https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/documents/report/general-json-report_en.json
- https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/documents/report/news-json-report_en.json

### Reuse

Source: European Medicines Agency (EMA). Metadata reproduced and dates normalized; retain EMA acknowledgement and official source link in every copy. Third-party material, images and logos excluded. No endorsement implied.
Legal notice: https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/about-us/about-website/legal-notice
Metadata only. No images, logos, third-party content, binary documents or personal profiling. No medical, regulatory or investment advice. Downstream users must retain attribution and source links and observe applicable source restrictions.

### Inputs

- `maxItems`: Maximum records emitted after local filters; bounded by current source coverage. Default: `50`.
- `sections`: Official snapshots to combine in one dataset. Guidance includes general agency information. Default: `["guidance", "news"]`.
- `keyword`: Optional case-insensitive substring of title and summary, applied locally. Default: `""`.
- `category`: Optional exact case-insensitive category, applied locally. Default: `""`.
- `updatedSince`: Optional YYYY-MM-DD inclusive date; uses last update or first publication when update is absent. Default: `""`.

### Safety and operation

Single concurrent request, minimum 2-second pacing (increased by robots policy), maximum 3 requests, 5 MB per response and 10 MB aggregate, 120-second elapsed budget checked before each read and request with at most 25-second socket timeout. Slow network operations can complete a socket timeout after the elapsed check. Fixed HTTPS official hosts and exact fetched paths, no user URLs, proxy service, authentication, redirects, retries, challenge solving or evasion. Standard runtime egress only. Stop on denial, challenge, invalid source structure or robots disallow. Item limit 1000. No documents fetched.

### Output

`dataset.schema.json` defines every field. `sourceId` is stable and `contentHash` excludes observation timestamps. Missing dates are null and diagnostics note malformed required dates. `RUN_REPORT` records source count, output count, bytes, requests, robots state, coverage and stops. Empty filter results are legitimate; malformed or empty source structure is not silently reported as success.

### Run and test

Python 3.12: pip install -r requirements.txt; python main.py
Portable offline tests: python -m unittest discover -s tests -v
The included fixtures are actual official-source responses captured 2026-10-06. Positive live test uses the real Apify SDK and local storage; no Console creation, deployment or publication is implied.

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("vixendata/ema-guidance-and-news-metadata").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
