## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Food Recall Tracker: FDA & USDA

US food recalls from the FDA and USDA FSIS (meat, poultry, eggs) in one feed: product, reason, classification, firm, distribution and lot/UPC codes, with brand and UPC watchlists and daily monitoring.

Built for grocers, restaurants, food distributors, e-commerce sellers, food-safety teams, insurers and journalists.

### Sources (official, free, no scraping)

- FDA food enforcement reports (openFDA)
- USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service recalls

### How it works

1. Pulls the official recall reports for your date range.
2. Normalizes them to one schema.
3. Checks each recall against your **watchlist** (brands, companies, products) and **codes** (UPC, NDC, lot or model numbers); hits appear in `matches`.
4. In monitoring mode, only recalls you haven't seen before are returned. Schedule it daily for alerts.

### Input

```json
{
  "daysBack": 30,
  "watchlist": [
    "your brand",
    "your supplier"
  ],
  "codes": [],
  "onlyMatches": false,
  "onlyNewRecalls": true
}
```

### Output

```json
{
  "type": "recall",
  "source": "FDA food",
  "recallId": "F-0123-2027",
  "reportDate": "2026-10-01",
  "classification": "Class I",
  "status": "Ongoing",
  "firm": "Example Foods, Inc.",
  "product": "Organic baby spinach, 10 oz clamshell, UPC 0 12345 67890 1",
  "reason": "Potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination",
  "distribution": "CA, OR, WA",
  "codes": "Best by 10/15/2026, lot 2614",
  "matches": [
    "Example Foods"
  ],
  "url": "https://...",
  "scrapedAt": "2026-10-05T12:00:00Z"
}
```

### Pricing

**$3 per 1,000 recalls.**

No start fee. You can set a maximum cost per run.

### Notes

- **This is information, not safety or medical advice.** Always confirm a recall and its remedy on the agency's notice.
- **Agency publishing delays:** agencies publish on their own schedules, so a recall can appear a few days after the firm's announcement.
