## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## ClinicalTrials.gov Search & Monitor

Search the official US National Library of Medicine **ClinicalTrials.gov** registry by condition, drug, sponsor, location, status, phase, study type and date range, and get clean, flat records ready for spreadsheets, CRMs and BI tools. Turn on **monitor mode** and a scheduled run returns only trials that are new or have been updated since the last run.

Data source: the free, public ClinicalTrials.gov API v2 operated by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). No scraping, no proxies, no API key.

### Who uses it

- **Pharma and biotech BD / competitive intelligence**: track competitor pipelines, new Phase 2/3 starts, terminated or withdrawn programs.
- **CROs and site networks**: find trials by sponsor, country and phase to target proposals.
- **Patient-recruitment firms**: list recruiting trials by condition and city, with eligibility and published central contacts.
- **Investors and analysts**: watch catalysts, enrollment and completion dates for a sponsor or drug.
- **Journalists and researchers**: build datasets of trials by condition, country or time period.

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| condition | Disease or condition, e.g. `breast cancer` |
| intervention | Drug, device or procedure, e.g. `semaglutide` |
| sponsor | Lead sponsor or collaborator, e.g. `Pfizer` |
| country / state / city | Location filter |
| query | Free-text search with AND / OR / NOT |
| statuses | RECRUITING, NOT_YET_RECRUITING, COMPLETED, TERMINATED, ... |
| phases | EARLY_PHASE1, PHASE1, PHASE2, PHASE3, PHASE4, NA |
| studyType | INTERVENTIONAL, OBSERVATIONAL, EXPANDED_ACCESS or ANY |
| startDateFrom / startDateTo | Study start date range (YYYY-MM-DD) |
| updatedFrom / updatedTo | Last-update date range |
| maxResults | Default 20 |
| includeEligibilityText, eligibilityMaxChars | Include the full inclusion/exclusion text, optionally truncated |
| onlyNew | Emit only new or updated trials since the last run |

A run with empty input works and returns 20 diabetes trials.

#### Example: recruiting Phase 3 oncology trials in Germany

```json
{ "condition": "lung cancer", "statuses": ["RECRUITING"], "phases": ["PHASE3"], "country": "Germany", "maxResults": 200 }
```

#### Example: everything a sponsor registered or changed lately

```json
{ "sponsor": "Novo Nordisk", "updatedFrom": "2026-09-01", "maxResults": 500 }
```

### Output

One record per trial: `nctId`, `title`, `officialTitle`, `status`, `phase`, `studyType`, `conditions`, `interventions`, `sponsor`, `sponsorClass`, `collaborators`, `enrollment`, `startDate`, `primaryCompletionDate`, `completionDate`, `firstPosted`, `lastUpdate`, `briefSummary`, `locationsCount`, `countries`, `sites` (first 5), `eligibility` (age range, sex, healthy volunteers, age groups, optional criteria text), `primaryOutcomes`, `contacts` (central contacts as published by the registry), `officials`, `url`. Export as JSON, CSV, Excel, XML or via API.

### Monitoring and scheduling

1. Run once with `onlyNew: true` to record a baseline (all current matches are emitted).
2. Create an Apify **Schedule** (daily or weekly) with the same input.
3. Each later run emits only trials that are new or whose last-update date changed. Connect the dataset to Slack, email, Google Sheets or a webhook.

State is kept in a named key-value store (`clinical-trials-seen` by default), separately for each distinct search, so you can monitor many searches safely. Results are sorted by most recently updated first.

### Pricing

Pay per event: one `trial-result` event per trial returned (suggested about $2 per 1,000 trials). Trials skipped in monitor mode are not charged. You're never charged for failed or empty lookups, and the run's status message tells you why any input came back short. Set a max charge per run to cap spend; the Actor stops cleanly when the limit is reached.

### FAQ

**Is this the official data?** Yes. Records come directly from the public ClinicalTrials.gov API v2 (NLM / NIH). This Actor is not affiliated with or endorsed by NLM.

**Are the contact emails personal data?** They are the central contact details that sponsors publish in the public registry. Use them in line with applicable law (CAN-SPAM, GDPR) and avoid bulk unsolicited mailing.

**How many results can I get?** The API pages through the whole registry (over 500,000 studies). Set `maxResults` as needed.

**Why does a sponsor search return other sponsors?** The registry matches the term against sponsor and collaborator fields and its synonym index; check the `sponsor` and `collaborators` fields.

**Dates look partial.** The registry publishes some dates as `YYYY-MM` only; they are returned as published.

**Not medical advice.** Registry data is provided by sponsors and may be incomplete or outdated. Verify on clinicaltrials.gov before relying on it.

### Is it legal? (public data only)

Yes, in the sense that it only reads public or official data: the public ClinicalTrials.gov API v2. It does not log in, bypass paywalls or access private data. You remain responsible for how you use the results, including privacy, copyright and marketing laws. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the data sources.

### Quick start and cost

Run it with the prefilled input to see sample output in seconds; the default run costs only a few cents at most. Then adjust the input and schedule it.

### Use from code and AI agents

Call it from any language with the Apify API, or let an AI agent find and run it through the [Apify MCP server](https://mcp.apify.com).

```python
from apify_client import ApifyClient
run = ApifyClient("<YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN>").actor("wintersworks/clinical-trials-search-monitor").call(run_input={"condition": "diabetes", "maxResults": 20})
items = ApifyClient("<YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN>").dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).list_items().items
```

Results land in the run's dataset (JSON, CSV, Excel). Set a maximum charge per run in the run options to cap spend.
