## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Global Food Limits Query — MRL & Additives (MVP)

Query **pesticide maximum residue limits (MRLs / tolerances)** across wave-1 markets from **public sources only**, with `source_url`, `as_of`, and a hard **disclaimer** on every row.

#### Live in this MVP (pesticide)

| Market | Source |
| --- | --- |
| **EU** | DG SANTE EU Pesticides Database API (v3) |
| **CODEX** | FAO Codex pesticide JSON (`jsoncodexpest`) |
| **US** | eCFR **40 CFR Part 180** (EPA tolerances) |

#### Stub status rows (honest coverage)

**UK, Canada, Japan, Korea** pesticide adapters are stubs. **All additive** queries are stubs. Chinese market-status notes: [`docs/MARKET_STATUS.zh-CN.md`](docs/MARKET_STATUS.zh-CN.md).

> **Not legal advice.** Official journals / gazettes / CFR text win. EU’s own DB disclaims legal force. Codex is a reference standard and may be under non-commercial license terms for redistribution — check FAO terms before commercial redistribution of Codex content.

### Input

| Field | Description |
| --- | --- |
| `queryType` | `pesticide` (default) or `additive` |
| `substance` | e.g. `glyphosate` |
| `commodity` | optional filter, e.g. `Maize`, `Apples` |
| `markets` | `EU`, `CODEX`, `US`, `UK`, `CA`, `JP`, `KR` |
| `includeStubs` | push stub status rows (default true) |
| `currentOnly` | EU: keep Applicable MRLs only (default true) |
| `maxItems` | row cap (default 200) |

#### Example

```json
{
  "queryType": "pesticide",
  "substance": "glyphosate",
  "commodity": "Maize",
  "markets": ["EU", "CODEX", "US", "UK", "JP"],
  "includeStubs": true,
  "maxItems": 50
}
```

### Output

Each dataset item includes: `market`, `domain`, `record_type` (`limit` | `status`), `substance`, `commodity`, `limit_value`, `unit`, `regulation_ref`, `as_of`, `fetched_at`, `source`, `source_url`, `disclaimer`, `notes`.

`OUTPUT_SUMMARY` in the key-value store lists per-market counts and live vs stub maps.

### Local smoke test

```bash
npm install
npm run test:api
## or: node scripts/sample-fetch.js glyphosate Maize
```

### Roadmap

1. Wire UK / CA / JP / KR pesticide sources
2. FDA Substances Added to Food + EU additives + Codex GSFA
3. Wave-2: BR, RU, TW, TH, MY, PH (PDF / search portals, stronger disclaimers)

### Suggested pricing

Pay-per-event on dataset items, about **$0.002–$0.005 / row** (compliance queries). Keep Private until coverage matches your Store copy.

### License

Actor code: Apache-2.0. Upstream data remain under their respective terms (EU open data / eCFR / FAO Codex, etc.).

# Actor input Schema

## `queryType` (type: `string`):

pesticide = MRL / tolerance query. additive = food-additive use limits (mostly stubs in MVP).

## `substance` (type: `string`):

Pesticide or additive common name (e.g. glyphosate, imidacloprid). English names work best for EU/Codex/US.

## `commodity` (type: `string`):

Crop or food name filter (e.g. Apples, Maize, Rice). Case-insensitive substring match. Empty = return all commodities for the substance (capped by maxItems).

## `markets` (type: `array`):

Which markets to query. EU / CODEX / US are live for pesticides. UK / CA / JP / KR return stub status rows until wired.

## `includeStubs` (type: `boolean`):

If true, push one status row per unimplemented market/source so callers see coverage honestly.

## `currentOnly` (type: `boolean`):

When querying EU, keep only applicability = Applicable (drop historical / no-longer-applicable rows).

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Safety cap on dataset rows (1–50000).

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "queryType": "pesticide",
  "substance": "glyphosate",
  "commodity": "Maize",
  "markets": [
    "EU",
    "CODEX",
    "US"
  ],
  "includeStubs": true,
  "currentOnly": true,
  "maxItems": 50
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `limits` (type: `string`):

Dataset of MRL/tolerance (or stub status) records.

## `summary` (type: `string`):

Key-value record OUTPUT_SUMMARY with counts, markets, and disclaimer.
