## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Website Tech Stack Detector — 3,500+ Technologies, Email & DNS

Find out **what any website is built with** — CMS, ecommerce platform, analytics, tag managers, CDN, hosting, JavaScript frameworks, payments, live chat, marketing tools — plus the company's **email provider (from public DNS MX records)**, **SSL issuer**, and **public emails and social profile links** found on the homepage. One clean row per website, ready for lead lists, CRM enrichment and competitor research.

- 🔍 **3,588 technology fingerprints** (open-source Wappalyzer 6.10.54 dataset, MIT) — not a hand-written list of 45 or 200 signatures
- 📧 **Email provider** (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho, Proofpoint, Mimecast…) from MX records — a great B2B lead signal
- 🧾 **Lead-ready columns**: `cms`, `ecommercePlatform`, `analytics`, `cdn`, `hosting`, `payments`, `liveChat`, `emails`, `socialLinks`
- 💸 **$2 per 1,000 websites** analyzed. **Failed, unreachable and robots.txt-blocked sites are free.** Almost-zero start fee.
- 🤖 Polite by design: one homepage request per site, **robots.txt respected**, no logins, no browser, no proxies needed

### What can I use it for?

- **Lead generation** — find every Shopify store in your list, every site still on WordPress, every company on Microsoft 365.
- **Sales qualification** — sort prospects by stack (HubSpot vs. Marketo, Stripe vs. PayPal, Intercom vs. Zendesk).
- **Competitor research** — see which analytics, A/B testing and CDN your competitors use.
- **Agencies & freelancers** — spot outdated CMS or missing analytics and pitch an upgrade.

### Input

Just paste domains or URLs:

```json
{
  "domains": ["wordpress.org", "allbirds.com", "hubspot.com"]
}
```

| Field | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `domains` | — | Domains (`shopify.com`) or full URLs. Duplicates removed. |
| `maxConcurrency` | 10 | Sites analyzed in parallel (1–50). |
| `requestTimeoutSecs` | 20 | Per-site timeout. Timeouts are not charged. |
| `includeDns` | true | MX/NS/TXT/CNAME lookups → email provider, nameservers, DNS-verified services. |
| `includeTls` | true | SSL certificate issuer and expiry date. |
| `extractContacts` | true | Public emails (mailto + visible text), phones (`tel:` links) and social links. |
| `minConfidence` | 0 | Hide detections below this confidence (0–100). |
| `outputFailed` | true | Add a (free) row with the error for sites that failed. |

### Output

One row per website. Real example (allbirds.com, shortened):

```json
{
  "domain": "allbirds.com",
  "finalUrl": "https://www.allbirds.com/",
  "status": "ok",
  "title": "Allbirds: Comfortable, Sustainable Shoes & Apparel",
  "technologyCount": 13,
  "cms": null,
  "ecommercePlatform": "Shopify",
  "tagManagers": ["Google Tag Manager"],
  "cdn": ["Cloudflare"],
  "payments": ["PayPal", "Apple Pay"],
  "emailProvider": "Microsoft 365",
  "mxHosts": ["allbirds-com.mail.protection.outlook.com"],
  "nameservers": ["ns1.markmonitor.com", "..."],
  "sslIssuer": "Let's Encrypt",
  "emails": ["help@allbirds.com"],
  "socialLinks": {
    "instagram": "https://www.instagram.com/allbirds",
    "facebook": "https://www.facebook.com/weareallbirds",
    "x": "https://twitter.com/allbirds",
    "tiktok": "https://www.tiktok.com/@weareallbirds"
  },
  "technologies": [
    { "name": "Shopify", "categories": ["Ecommerce"], "version": null, "confidence": 100 },
    { "name": "PayPal", "categories": ["Payment processors"], "version": null, "confidence": 100 }
  ]
}
```

More results from a real test run (Oct 2026):

| Domain | CMS / Ecommerce | Email provider | CDN / Hosting | # tech |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| wordpress.org | WordPress | — | — | 13 |
| hubspot.com | HubSpot CMS Hub | Google Workspace | Cloudflare | 14 |
| gymshark.com | Shopify | Proofpoint | Cloudflare, AWS | 12 |
| vercel.com | — (Next.js, React) | Google Workspace | Vercel, AWS | 20 |
| github.com | Contentful | Microsoft 365 | GitHub Pages, AWS | 17 |
| nonexistent-domain-xyz-12345.com | — | — | — | failed, **not charged** |

Full field list: `input, domain, finalUrl, status, httpStatus, error, title, description, language, technologyCount, technologyNames, cms, ecommercePlatform, analytics, tagManagers, cdn, hosting, webServers, frameworks, uiFrameworks, programmingLanguages, marketingAutomation, crm, liveChat, payments, advertising, emailServices, cookieConsent, abTesting, reviews, security, emailProvider, mxHosts, nameservers, sslIssuer, sslValidTo, emails, phones, socialLinks, technologies[{name, categories, version, confidence, website, cpe}], responseTimeMs, analyzedAt`.

The dataset has two views: **Tech stack overview** (one row per site, ideal for CSV/Excel) and **One row per technology** (for pivot tables). A `RUN_SUMMARY` record lists every failed or robots-skipped site with its reason.

### Pricing

Pay per event — you only pay for websites that were actually analyzed:

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Site analyzed | **$0.002** ($2 per 1,000 sites) |
| Actor start | $0.00005 |
| Failed / unreachable / robots.txt-blocked site | **free** |

Set a max total charge on the run and the Actor stops cleanly when it is reached.

### How it works & limits

1. Checks the domain resolves and that `robots.txt` allows fetching the homepage.
2. Downloads the homepage once (HTTPS, falls back to HTTP; follows redirects).
3. Matches response headers, cookies, HTML, `<meta>` tags, script URLs, inline scripts and DOM selectors against 3,588 fingerprints; resolves implied technologies (e.g. WooCommerce ⇒ WordPress ⇒ PHP) and versions where exposed.
4. Adds public DNS records and TLS certificate data.

Honest limits:

- **No JavaScript execution** (no headless browser) — this keeps it fast and cheap, but tools that only reveal themselves after JS runs (some analytics loaded via a tag manager) can be missed. Google Tag Manager itself is detected.
- **Homepage only** — inner pages are not crawled.
- Fingerprint data is the last MIT-licensed Wappalyzer release (early 2023); very new tools may be missing.
- Sites behind bot walls (e.g. Cloudflare challenge) may return few technologies or fail (free).

### Is it legal?

The Actor only reads what every website publicly sends to any visitor's browser and public DNS records, respects `robots.txt`, and never logs in. Emails and phone numbers are only collected if published on the homepage; if you process personal data (e.g. a named person's email) you are responsible for complying with GDPR/CCPA and anti-spam laws in your jurisdiction.

### FAQ

**Can I export to CSV / Excel / Google Sheets?** Yes — use the "Tech stack overview" view in the dataset export.

**Can I run it on 100,000 domains?** Yes. Increase `maxConcurrency` (e.g. 30) and memory; costs stay $0.002 per analyzed site.

**Why is analytics empty for some sites?** Many sites load analytics through a tag manager via JavaScript, which this fast HTTP-only detector does not execute. See `tagManagers`.
