## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Craigslist Scraper: listings, cars, housing and jobs

Scrape **craigslist** listings in any of its **707 areas** in the US, Canada, the UK and beyond, by area, category and keyword. Every listing comes with the **title, price and currency, the date it was posted, the place, its category, photos and link**. Category-specific fields are included too: **bedrooms and ft²** for housing, **odometer** for cars, and **pay, job title and company** for jobs. Turn on **Include full details** to also get the full description, every attribute (condition, make, model, fuel, transmission, rent period, employment type…), the first-posted and last-updated dates, and the postal area.

No login, no cookies and no craigslist account are needed.

### What you get

| | |
|---|---|
| **Listing** | Title, price, currency, posting date, link, craigslist post ID, category, owner or dealer |
| **Place** | Area and sub-area (e.g. SF bay area › east bay), the place as written, neighborhood, city, state / province, approximate coordinates (~1 km) |
| **Photos** | Every photo at 1200×900 |
| **Housing** | Bedrooms, floor area (ft²), open-house dates; with details also bathrooms, rent period and amenities |
| **Vehicles** | Odometer and unit (mi/km); with details also year, make and model, condition, fuel, transmission, drive, title status, color and type |
| **Jobs and gigs** | Pay as written, job title, company; with details also employment type and notices |
| **Full details** (optional) | Description, all attributes, first-posted, last-updated and expiry dates, postal area |

### How to use it

1. Enter one or more **areas**. Use the craigslist site name (`sfbay`, `newyork`, `losangeles`, `chicago`, `toronto`, `london`), the area's name (`SF bay area`, `New York`), or a sub-area (`sfbay/eby`, `east bay`, `brooklyn`).
2. Pick a **category** (all for sale, cars & trucks, apartments, jobs…) and optionally enter **keywords**.
3. Set **Max listings** and any filters, then run.

Each keyword is searched in each area. **Max listings** is the total for the run, shared fairly between your searches.

#### Input examples

Bikes for sale in the SF bay area:

```json
{
  "areas": ["sfbay"],
  "keywords": ["bike"],
  "category": "sss",
  "maxItems": 50
}
```

Hondas from owners in Toronto between $5,000 and $20,000, with every attribute:

```json
{
  "areas": ["toronto"],
  "category": "cta",
  "makeModel": "honda",
  "sellerType": "owner",
  "minPrice": 5000,
  "maxPrice": 20000,
  "includeDetails": true,
  "maxItems": 100
}
```

2-bedroom apartments in Brooklyn and Queens posted in the last 24 hours (good for a daily schedule):

```json
{
  "areas": ["newyork/brk", "newyork/que"],
  "category": "apa",
  "minBedrooms": 2,
  "maxBedrooms": 2,
  "maxAgeHours": 24,
  "maxItems": 500
}
```

Driver jobs within 5 miles of a ZIP code:

```json
{
  "areas": ["sfbay"],
  "category": "jjj",
  "keywords": ["driver"],
  "postalCode": "94110",
  "searchDistance": 5
}
```

You can also paste craigslist **search URLs** into **craigslist URLs**. Set your filters on craigslist, copy the address, and every filter in it is kept. You can paste **posting URLs** there as well.

}
```
`description`, `attributes`, `originalPostedAt`, `updatedAt`, `expiresAt` and `postalCode` are filled when **Include full details** is on. Every row has the same columns, and a value the listing doesn't state is `null`. The dataset has ready-made views for vehicles, housing and jobs.
### Use cases
- **Car dealers and flippers**: track private-party prices by make, model, year and odometer, and get new listings every hour.
- **Rental market research**: compare rents by bedrooms, floor area and neighborhood across cities.
- **Resale and arbitrage**: spot underpriced items as soon as they're posted.
- **Local job market**: see who is hiring drivers, trades or retail staff, and what they pay.
- **Lead lists for businesses**: dealers, brokers and service providers active in an area.
### FAQ
**Do I need a craigslist account, cookies or a login?** No. The scraper reads the same public listings any visitor sees. It never logs in, never posts, and never uses craigslist's reply or contact flow.
**Which areas does it cover?** All 707 craigslist areas and their sub-areas, in every country craigslist runs in. Use the site name you see in craigslist's address (`sfbay` in sfbay.craigslist.org) or the area's name. An area name craigslist doesn't have is skipped, not charged, and named in the run's status message.
**How many listings can I get?** Up to 10,000 per search, which is craigslist's own limit. Set **Max listings** to 0 to get everything your searches find. Split bigger searches by sub-area, price range or category.
**How fast is it?** Search results come in blocks of up to 1,080 listings, so 1,000 listings take a few seconds. **Include full details** opens every posting, which adds about a second per listing (a few run in parallel). Leave it off unless you need the description or attributes.
**Why do some listings come from nearby areas?** When an area has few results, craigslist adds listings from nearby areas. They are left out by default, so you only get the areas you chose. Turn on **Include nearby areas** to keep them; they are marked `isNearby: true`.
**What about personal ads, community posts and resumes?** They are never collected. Community posts (missed connections, rideshare, activity partners), resumes and "housing wanted" posts are about people, not items or businesses, so the scraper skips those categories.
**Does it collect seller contact details?** No. craigslist doesn't show who posted a listing, and the scraper never opens the reply or contact flow. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses that posters typed into their descriptions are replaced with `[phone removed]` and `[email removed]`. Street addresses are left out, coordinates are rounded to about 1 km, and Canadian and UK postcodes are cut to their area part (M2N, SW1A). Serial numbers are not collected.
**Which proxy should I use?** Keep the default (Apify Proxy, datacenter). It comes with every Apify plan, including the free one. If craigslist refuses datacenter IPs for a while, the run switches to residential proxies when your account has them, and carries on without them when it doesn't.
**What does a run cost?** You pay per listing saved, per search, and a small fee per run. Full details are a separate, optional charge per listing. See the Pricing tab. Listings that are skipped or filtered out are never charged.
**Is it legal to scrape craigslist?** This Actor only collects publicly available data: the listings, prices, photos, places and posting details that anyone can see on craigslist without an account. Collecting publicly available data is generally legal, but you're responsible for how you use it. Listing text is written by the people who posted it, so a description can still mention a first name or a business's own details, and that can count as personal data. You must follow privacy laws such as GDPR, PIPEDA and CCPA, as well as craigslist's terms. If you're unsure, check with a lawyer. More on this: [Is web scraping legal?](https://blog.apify.com/is-web-scraping-legal/)
