## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## FMCSA New Carriers: Recently Added USDOT Records

Trucking companies, brokers, freight forwarders and other entities added to FMCSA's motor carrier census in the last days, read straight from the official FMCSA Company Census File on the U.S. Department of Transportation's open-data portal. One table with fleet size, drivers, cargo, interstate or intrastate operation, hazmat and for-hire status, and the physical address. Filter by state, cargo, entity type or fleet size, schedule it daily with tracking to get only records you have not received, or look up USDOT numbers.

A 7-day window is roughly 1,000 to 1,300 records.

### What you get for each record

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `dotNumber`, `legalName`, `dbaName` | USDOT number, legal name and DBA as registered |
| `addedDate` | FMCSA's add date: the date the record was created or reactivated (see below) |
| `status` | `ACTIVE`, `INACTIVE` or `PENDING` (a Mexico-domiciled applicant under review) |
| `operation` | `INTERSTATE`, `INTRASTATE_HAZMAT` or `INTRASTATE_NON_HAZMAT` |
| `entityTypes` | `CARRIER`, `BROKER`, `FREIGHT_FORWARDER`, `SHIPPER`, `REGISTRANT`, `INTERMODAL_EQUIPMENT_PROVIDER`, `CARGO_TANK` |
| `classifications`, `forHire` | FMCSA's classifications (Authorized For Hire, Private Property and so on); `forHire` = Authorized For Hire |
| `hazmat` | FMCSA's hazardous materials indicator |
| `powerUnits`, `trucks`, `buses`, `drivers`, `cdlDrivers` | Fleet and driver counts as reported |
| `cargo`, `cargoOther` | Cargo types, with FMCSA's own names, and the text of "Other" |
| `dockets` | MC, MX or FF docket numbers on the record (new registrants usually have none yet) |
| `address` | Physical address: street, city, state, ZIP, country |
| `safetyRating`, `safetyRatingDate` | `SATISFACTORY`, `CONDITIONAL`, `UNSATISFACTORY` or `NOT_RATED` |
| `dunsNumber` | Dun & Bradstreet number when given |
| `saferUrl`, `sourceRecordUrl` | FMCSA's SAFER company snapshot and the exact record on the open-data portal |
| `changeStatus`, `firstSeen` | With tracking: `FIRST_RUN`, `NEW` or `SEEN` |

### What "added" means

FMCSA's data dictionary defines the add date as the date the record was created, reactivated, or systematically updated. Almost all records added in a given week have no review, rating or prior form history, but some are reactivations of older entities, and FMCSA publishes no field that separates the two. USDOT numbers are not issued in order, so the number does not tell either.

### Owner-operators and personal data

No phone numbers, e-mail addresses, company officers or mailing addresses are collected; those columns are not even requested. FMCSA gives no organisation type for new records, so a record whose legal name has no company suffix (LLC, Inc., Corp., Co., Ltd., LP and so on) is treated as an owner-operator registered under their own name. In lists those records are left out and only counted (about 14% of added records); a USDOT number lookup returns them without name, street, ZIP or DUNS.

### Filters

`daysBack` or `fromDate`/`toDate`, `states`, `operations`, `entityTypes`, `cargo`, `forHireOnly`, `hazmatOnly`, `minPowerUnits`, `maxPowerUnits`, `includeInactive`, `maxItems`. A USDOT number or name lookup ignores the date window and returns the current record whatever its status.

### Things to know

- The census is refreshed daily and trails registrations by about one to two days; the run summary shows the newest add date published, and the status message says when it is behind your window.
- Operating authority and insurance are not included: FMCSA's separate authority dataset stopped being updated in May 2026. The SAFER link shows the live authority status.
- If the census has not been refreshed for more than 7 days, the run fails instead of returning stale records as current.

### Data

The FMCSA Company Census File (MCMIS), published by the U.S. Department of Transportation as open data, read through the portal's public API with one request per second as the portal asks. Code meanings follow FMCSA's own data dictionary (revision 08). No login and no scraping of search pages.

# Actor input Schema

## `daysBack` (type: `integer`):

Records added within the last N days, today included (1-31). FMCSA's data trails by one to two days. Ignored when a from date is set.

## `fromDate` (type: `string`):

Optional. First add date to include (YYYY-MM-DD). The range can cover at most 31 days.

## `toDate` (type: `string`):

Optional. Last add date to include. Defaults to today.

## `states` (type: `array`):

Optional. Two-letter codes of the physical address state, for example TX, CA.

## `operations` (type: `array`):

Optional. Interstate, intrastate hazmat or intrastate non-hazmat carriers.

## `entityTypes` (type: `array`):

Optional. Carrier, broker, freight forwarder and so on, as FMCSA classifies them.

## `cargo` (type: `array`):

Optional. Keep entities that carry any of these cargo types (FMCSA's own list).

## `forHireOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Keep only entities classified as Authorized For Hire.

## `hazmatOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Keep only entities with the hazardous materials indicator.

## `minPowerUnits` (type: `integer`):

Optional. Keep entities with at least this many power units (trucks and tractors).

## `maxPowerUnits` (type: `integer`):

Optional. Keep entities with at most this many power units.

## `includeInactive` (type: `boolean`):

Also return records whose status is Inactive or Pending. Off = active only.

## `dotNumbers` (type: `array`):

Optional. USDOT numbers to look up, whatever their add date or status (up to 500 with names). Turns off the date window.

## `names` (type: `array`):

Optional. Every record whose legal or DBA name contains this text (3 characters or more).

## `trackChanges` (type: `boolean`):

Remember the USDOT numbers returned by earlier tracked runs (120 days, in a key-value store named fmcsa-new-carriers-state in your account) and mark each row NEW or SEEN.

## `onlyNew` (type: `boolean`):

With tracking on, leave out records an earlier tracked run already returned. Good for a daily schedule with a 7-day window.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Upper bound on rows returned, newest first. A 7-day window is roughly 1,000-1,300 records.
