## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## 🏦 VC & Private Equity Firm Directory — SEC Form ADV Data

A clean, source-traced directory of **venture capital firms and private-markets investment managers**, built from the
SEC's official Form ADV filings. Each record gives you the firm's name, main-office location and business phone,
website, fund counts by type, private-fund assets and latest filing date. Every field says where it came from.

> **Pricing (pay per event): $0.005 per investor record**, which is $5 per 1,000.
>
> - No charge for duplicates, invalid rows or searches that match nothing.
> - A **$0.02 firm-email** event exists, but **firm emails are not available at launch** (see below). It is charged
> only if an email is actually delivered.

### What you get

**About 6,400 investment advisers** that manage VC or PE-type private funds and file with the US SEC (October 2026
filings).

- About 4,400 are in North America, 620 in Europe, 340 in Asia-Pacific, 235 in Latin America and the Caribbean, and
  120 in the Middle East and Africa.
- About 730 are registered at a private residence, so the SEC withholds their address.
- **Data comes straight from the SEC on every run.** The Actor downloads the SEC's current monthly adviser files each
  time it runs, so there's no stale copy.
- **The labels are honest, and every record lists the SEC facts behind its label:**

| `primaryInvestorType` | Records | Meaning | Checked on unseen, reviewed samples |
|---|---|---|---|
| `venture-capital` | ≈ 2,960 | Venture funds are the adviser's main fund type, or it uses the SEC's venture-capital-adviser exemption | 26 of 26 were VC firms |
| `private-equity` | ≈ 250 | **PE-indicated**: PE-type funds plus a private-equity name (equity, buyout, growth…). **Not universally confirmed** | 28 of 32 were classic PE; the rest were other private-markets managers |
| `private-markets` | ≈ 3,220 | Manages PE-type closed-end funds, but nothing confirms classic PE: may be buyout, growth, credit, infrastructure or real assets | 22 of 23 were private-markets investors; about 6 in 10 classic PE |

Some advisers are **excluded**:

- wealth managers;
- long-only asset managers;
- fund administrators and SPV platforms;
- broker-dealers;
- about 160 filings that report identical, templated asset figures with no website.

Credit, real-estate, hedge, infrastructure, fund-of-funds and SPV-platform managers are available as opt-in
**adjacent** types.

### Fields

| Field | Source | Filled (6,430 core records) |
|---|---|---|
| `companyName`, `legalName`, `crd`, `investorId`, `investorStatus`, `registrationType` | SEC Form ADV | 100% |
| `primaryInvestorType`, `otherInvestorTypes`, `classificationReasons`, `reviewFlags`, `dataConfidence` | Derived from Form ADV | 100% |
| `privateFundGrossAssetsUsd`, `privateFundCount`, `privateFundCounts` | SEC Form ADV | 99% |
| `regulatoryAumUsd` | SEC Form ADV (SEC-registered advisers) | — |
| `companyPhone` (main business phone), `headquartersAddress`, `city`, `state`, `country`, `region` | SEC Form ADV | 89% |
| `website`, `domain` | SEC Form ADV, as filed | 63% |
| `linkedinUrl`, `socialLinks` | SEC Form ADV | 18% |
| `lastVerifiedAt` (the firm's own latest filing date), `scrapedAt`, `sourceUrl`, `fieldSources`, `iapdUrl` | Provenance | 100% |

`reviewFlags` marks facts that didn't change the label but that you may want to know. The possible values are:

- `adviser-is-registered-broker-dealer`
- `spv-or-series-vehicle`
- `angel-network-or-syndicate`
- `family-office`
- `reported-assets-identical-to-unrelated-filers`
- `manually-reviewed`

**Always `null` in this version**, because no approved source supplies them reliably:

- sectors, stages, investment geographies and cheque sizes;
- portfolio companies, investment counts and exits;
- named contacts, descriptions and founding year.

### About emails: not available at launch

The Actor includes an optional firm-email lookup (`enrichContacts`). It returns an organisation-level address (info@,
deals@, ir@…) **only** from websites whose reuse permission has been established and recorded by a human reviewer:
explicit permission in the site's terms, written permission from the firm, or counsel approval. **No websites are
approved at launch**, so this option currently returns no emails and contacts no websites. Each record explains why
in `contactEnrichment.sitePermission`.

We never guess addresses, decode hidden addresses or return personal emails. Business phone numbers and websites
come from the SEC filings and are always included where filed.

### Input examples

US VC firms with at least $100M in private funds:

```json
{ "investorTypes": ["venture-capital"], "countries": ["United States"], "minPrivateFundAssetsUsd": 100000000, "maxItems": 500 }
```

PE-indicated and private-markets managers in Europe:

```json
{ "investorTypes": ["private-equity", "private-markets"], "regions": ["europe"], "maxItems": 300 }
```

Monthly refresh: advisers that filed or amended their Form ADV since 1 October, excluding firms you already have:

```json
{ "filedOnOrAfter": "2026-10-01", "previousRunIds": ["<your earlier run ID>"], "maxItems": 1000 }
```

**Supported filters:**

- `investorTypes`, `countries` (aliases such as US, UK and UAE work), `regions`, `states`, `cities`;
- `searchText` (firm name, domain or city contains);
- `minPrivateFundAssetsUsd` / `maxPrivateFundAssetsUsd`;
- `registrationTypes` (exempt reporting / SEC-registered) and `vcExemptOnly`;
- `requireWebsite` and `requirePhone`;
- `filedOnOrAfter`;
- `includeAdjacentManagers`;
- `dedupeBy: "firm-domain"`, which keeps one record per firm website when a group files several advisers;
- `previousRunIds` and `excludeDomains`;
- `maxItems` (default 20) and `runTag`.

Results are sorted by private-fund assets, largest first.

  "companyName": "Union Square Ventures",
  "primaryInvestorType": "venture-capital",
  "classificationReasons": [
    "funds: VC=26, PE=0, hedge=0, realEstate=0",
    "relies on the SEC venture-capital-fund adviser exemption (rule 203(l))",
    "venture funds are the largest fund type"
  ],
  "reviewFlags": [],
  "registrationType": "exempt-reporting",
  "investorStatus": "ERA - Active",
  "city": "New York", "state": "NY", "country": "United States",
  "companyPhone": "212-994-7880",

  "companyEmail": null
}
```
### Freshness
- **Source:** the SEC's "Information About Registered Investment Advisers and Exempt Reporting Advisers" files,
  published monthly and downloaded live on every run.
- `lastVerifiedAt` is each firm's own latest Form ADV filing; 96% of records filed in 2026.
- Each month the SEC data typically adds about 70–100 new VC/PE advisers and records about 190–290 re-filings with
  updated assets or contact details. Use `filedOnOrAfter` and `previousRunIds` to pay only for what's new.
### Limitations
- **This is a regulatory directory, not a full investor database.** It has no named partners, sectors or stages, and
  no emails at launch. It does not cover PitchBook-style data.
- **Not covered:** family offices (generally exempt from SEC registration), individual angels, and firms that don't
  file with the SEC.
- **Labels follow what firms file.**
  - `private-equity` is PE-*indicated*, not confirmed.
  - `private-markets` is broader than PE.
  - Some firms file funds under a type that differs from how they describe themselves. For example, an energy PE firm
    may file its funds as venture capital.
- **Websites are reported as filed.** About 1,900 advisers list only a social-media link, and some list an
  affiliate's site.
- **If the SEC files can't be read, the run fails clearly** instead of returning an empty "successful" result.
  Nothing is charged.
### Use with the API and integrations
Run it from the Apify API, the Python or JavaScript client, or Make, Zapier or n8n. The `RUN_SUMMARY` record in the
run's key-value store reports:
- matches and deliveries;
- why the run stopped;
- skipped counts, with reasons;
- the SEC files used and the events charged.
### FAQ
**Is this PitchBook or Crunchbase data?** No. It is built only from official SEC filings. It is not affiliated with
or comparable to commercial investor databases.
**Are the phone numbers personal?** No. They are each firm's main-office business phone as filed with the SEC.
Numbers for advisers registered at a private residence are withheld.
**Do I pay again for firms I already have?** Not if you pass `previousRunIds` or `excludeDomains`.
**Can I contact these firms?** They are business contacts, but your outreach must comply with the laws that apply to
you: CAN-SPAM, GDPR/UK GDPR, PECR and others.
# Actor input Schema
## `investorTypes` (type: `array`):
Leave empty for all core types. 'Private equity (PE-indicated)' = PE-type funds plus a private-equity name; not universally confirmed (about 1 in 8 is another private-markets type). 'Private markets' = PE-type closed-end funds without that confirmation: may be buyout, growth, credit, infrastructure or real assets (95.7% are private-markets investors, about 61% classic PE). Adjacent types need 'Include adjacent private-markets managers'.
## `countries` (type: `array`):
English country names as the SEC writes them, e.g. 'United States', 'United Kingdom', 'Germany'. Common aliases (US, UK, UAE) work. Advisers whose address is a private residence have no country on file and are excluded by this filter.
## `regions` (type: `array`):
Region of the adviser's main office.
## `states` (type: `array`):
Two-letter state codes of the main office, e.g. CA, NY, TX.
## `cities` (type: `array`):
Main-office city, matched case-insensitively (exact name, e.g. 'San Francisco').
## `searchText` (type: `string`):
Case-insensitive text matched against firm name, legal name, website domain and city.
## `minPrivateFundAssetsUsd` (type: `integer`):
Total gross assets of the adviser's private funds, as reported on Form ADV.
## `maxPrivateFundAssetsUsd` (type: `integer`):
Upper bound for the same Form ADV figure.
## `registrationTypes` (type: `array`):
Exempt reporting advisers (most VC firms) and/or SEC-registered advisers.
## `vcExemptOnly` (type: `boolean`):
Keep only exempt reporting advisers that rely on rule 203(l), which is reserved for advisers solely to venture capital funds.
## `includeAdjacentManagers` (type: `boolean`):
Also return managers whose main business is private credit, real estate, hedge funds, infrastructure or fund-of-funds. Off by default.
## `enrichContacts` (type: `boolean`):
Optional. Returns an organisation-level email only for firms whose website reuse permission has been established and recorded by a human reviewer (explicit permission in the site's terms, written permission from the firm, or counsel approval). No websites are approved at launch, so this currently returns no emails and contacts no websites. Charged as 'firm-email' ($0.02) only when an email is actually delivered.
## `requireEmail` (type: `boolean`):
Only return firms with a permitted firm email. No websites are approved at launch, so this currently returns no results.
## `requireWebsite` (type: `boolean`):
Firm website from Form ADV (social-media links do not count).
## `requirePhone` (type: `boolean`):
Main-office phone from Form ADV. Phones of advisers registered at a private residence are never returned.
## `filedOnOrAfter` (type: `string`):
Only advisers whose latest Form ADV filing (new registration or amendment) is on or after this date, e.g. 2026-10-01. Use it for monthly refreshes so you only pay for advisers that filed recently.
## `dedupeBy` (type: `string`):
Large firms file several advisers. 'Firm website domain' keeps one record per firm website (the one with the largest private-fund assets).
## `previousRunIds` (type: `array`):
Apify run or dataset IDs. Investors already delivered there are skipped and not charged. Missing datasets are reported in RUN_SUMMARY.
## `excludeDomains` (type: `array`):
Firm website domains to skip, e.g. your existing contacts.
## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):
Records are returned largest private-fund assets first.
## `runTag` (type: `string`):
Optional label copied onto every record.
