๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Restaurant Health Inspection Scraper: NYC, Chicago & Austin

Restaurant Health Inspection Scraper returns official health inspection results, individual violations and restaurant profiles from New York City, Chicago and Austin in one normalized dataset. Search by restaurant name, no login or API key needed. Pay per record: inspections $0.02, violations and profiles $0.01 each. Export to CSV, Excel or JSON.

Restaurant Health Inspection Scraper reads each city's own open-data portal (NYC DOHMH inspection results, Chicago Food Inspections, Austin Food Establishment Inspection Scores) and maps three different schemas into one set of fields. In a 10-record cloud test on 2026-10-04, searching "pizza" returned the latest NYC inspection (date 2026-09-30, score 57, 11 violations) plus its violations as separate rows, and billing matched the delivered rows exactly.

๐Ÿ”Ž What does the Restaurant Health Inspection Scraper do?

  • Search restaurant health inspections by name across NYC, Chicago and Austin in one run.
  • Get one inspection-record per real inspection visit: restaurant, address, date, inspection type, result, score.
  • Get every cited violation as its own violation-record (NYC and Chicago).
  • Get one deduplicated restaurant-profile-record per unique restaurant in the run.
  • Leave the name blank to pull the most recent inspections for the selected cities.
  • Schedule it weekly and export to CSV, Excel, JSON or XML, or call it through the Apify API.

๐Ÿ“‹ What restaurant inspection data can you extract?

FieldTypeNotes
recordTypestringinspection-record, violation-record or restaurant-profile-record
citystringNew York City, Chicago or Austin
restaurantIdstringThe city's own ID (NYC CAMIS, Chicago license number, Austin facility ID)
restaurantNamestringBusiness name as published
address, zipCodestringInspection and profile records
inspectionDatestringISO timestamp from the source
inspectionTypestringFor example Cycle Inspection / Re-inspection, Routine Inspection
resultstringNYC letter grade, Chicago Pass / Pass w/ Conditions / Fail, Austin score band like 90+ (Green)
scorestringNYC and Austin numeric score; N/A for Chicago, which publishes none
violationCountnumber or stringCount of violations; N/A for Austin, which has no violation detail
violationCode, violationDescriptionstringViolation records
criticalFlagstringNYC Critical / Not Critical; N/A for Chicago
scrapedAtstringUTC timestamp of the run

A field a city does not publish is returned as "N/A" so you always know it is a source limit. Austin's dataset has no violation-level data at all, so Austin returns inspections and profiles only.

๐Ÿ’ฐ How much does it cost to scrape restaurant health inspections?

Pay per event. You are charged only for records that were saved to your dataset.

EventPrice (free plan tier)What it is
inspection-record$0.02One inspection visit
violation-record$0.01One cited violation
restaurant-profile-record$0.01One unique restaurant, once per run

Example: the 10-record test run above delivered 1 inspection and 9 violations, which is $0.02 + 9 x $0.01 = $0.11. Failed fetches, empty searches and error rows are never charged, and the run stops cleanly at your maximum charge limit. Paid Apify plans get lower per-event prices on the inspection record. Prices can change; the Store page shows the current ones.

๐Ÿš€ How to scrape restaurant health inspections (3 steps)

  1. Open the Actor and pick one or more cities.
  2. Type a restaurant name such as pizza, or leave it blank for the latest inspections, and set maxItems.
  3. Click Start, then download the dataset as CSV, Excel, JSON or XML.

โš™๏ธ Restaurant health inspection scraper input

FieldTypeDefaultDescription
citiesarray["nyc","chicago","austin"]Which city portals to search
restaurantNamestringemptyName to search for; blank returns the most recent inspections
maxItemsinteger10Max records across all cities and record types; free users are limited to 10
{ "cities": ["nyc", "chicago"], "restaurantName": "pizza", "maxItems": 50 }

Each city returns at most the 200 most recent matching source rows per run. NYC publishes one source row per violation, so a NYC run covers fewer inspections than 200. Records are ordered by recency and each inspection is followed by its own violations, so a small maxItems can be filled by one violation-heavy inspection; raise maxItems to reach other cities. When several cities return data, inspections are interleaved across cities.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Restaurant health inspection scraper output

The dataset has one row per record, identified by recordType. The Overview view shows record type, city, restaurant, date, result, score and violation text. A search with no match finishes as SUCCEEDED with a clear status message and zero charges. If every city portal is unreachable, the run fails with an explicit message and nothing is charged.

๐Ÿ“Š Restaurant inspection scraper vs alternatives

Prices read from the public Apify Store on 2026-10-04:

ActorCitiesPriceRecord types
NYC + Chicago Restaurant Inspections Scraper (maximedupre)2$0.0036 per record1 flat record
Restaurant Inspection Data Scraper (maydit)7$0.004 per record1 flat record
This Actor3$0.02 inspection, $0.01 violation or profile3, with violations as separate rows

On price per inspection row the alternatives are cheaper, and the maydit actor covers more cities. What the extra cost buys here is violation-level rows (code, description, critical flag) and a deduplicated restaurant profile, with Chicago's pipe-delimited violation text already split into rows. If you only need a flat score list, a cheaper actor fits better.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ผ Restaurant inspection data use cases

  • Food safety and compliance: track a chain's violation patterns across cities.
  • Insurance and risk: review a venue's inspection history before underwriting.
  • Review and discovery apps: show grades and specific violations beside listings.
  • Journalism and research: compare critical violation rates between cities.

Use the Apify client for Python or JavaScript, schedule weekly runs, or connect the dataset to Zapier, Make, n8n or Google Sheets. AI agents can call it through the Apify MCP server.

The data comes from public open-data portals run by the cities, which publish it for public use. The Actor reads only that public data, needs no login and bypasses nothing. Check each portal's terms and your local rules for how you use the data. This is not legal advice.

โ“ Frequently asked questions

Which cities does it cover? New York City, Chicago and Austin, each from that city's own official portal.

Does it include individual violations? Yes for NYC and Chicago. Austin's source only publishes a score and a color band, so Austin has no violation rows.

Why did I get 0 results? The name matched nothing in the selected cities. Try a shorter name such as pizza, add more cities, or leave the name blank. The run still succeeds and charges nothing.

Why do the results look different per city? Each city publishes a different schema: NYC letter grade plus score, Chicago Pass or Fail, Austin score plus color band. Shared fields are normalized and each city's own labels are kept.

Why are some fields N/A? That city's source does not publish the field, for example Chicago has no numeric score.

How is the restaurant profile billed? Once per unique restaurant in a run, not once per inspection.

Do I need an API key? No. No login, session or key is required.

How fresh is the data? As fresh as each city's portal. In the 2026-10-04 test the newest NYC inspection was dated 2026-09-30.

Why did my run stop early? It reached maxItems, your maximum charge limit, or the 200-row-per-city source cap.
