What you get

VAT check (VIES): valid / invalid / temporarily unavailable, registered name and address as returned by the member state.
LEI lookup (GLEIF): LEI, legal name, status, legal form, legal & HQ address, registration authority ID, renewal dates.
Honest matching: a LEI is only reported as bestMatch if the legal name matches exactly after normalisation; similar names are listed as candidates only (matchType).
Clear statuses: VAT_VALID, VAT_INVALID, VAT_CHECK_UNAVAILABLE, BAD_INPUT, LEI_FOUND, LEI_CANDIDATES_ONLY, LEI_NOT_FOUND, LOOKUP_ERROR.

Good to know (limits)

VIES depends on each member state's service. Some (notably Germany at times) are temporarily unavailable; the actor retries and then returns VAT_CHECK_UNAVAILABLE – that is not a statement that the VAT number is invalid.
VIES does not return a name/address for every country. A VAT number being valid does not by itself verify who you are dealing with.
Not every company has a LEI.
