NPPES NPI Registry Scraper searches the official CMS NPPES NPI Registry for US healthcare providers and organizations. Give it a name, NPI number, specialty, state, city or ZIP code and get NPI, credentials, address, phone, fax, specialties and license numbers per row. Export CSV, Excel, JSON or API. No login, no API key. Verified 2026-10-03 against the live registry. Priced at $20 per 1,000 records on the free tier.
NPPES NPI Registry Scraper turns the US government's National Provider Identifier database into a clean dataset. In a verified run, the search "hospital" in Texas returned 137 organizations in a single registry page, 10 of them delivered as full records with specialty and state license number. It is built for credentialing teams, medical billing staff, healthcare lead-generation and anyone who needs to verify a provider NPI in bulk.
๐ฉบ What does NPPES NPI Registry Scraper do?
It queries the CMS NPPES NPI Registry API and returns one row per provider (NPI-1, individuals) or organization (NPI-2). Typical searches:
- NPI lookup: verify a list of exact 10-digit NPI numbers.
- Find all providers with a last name starting with "Smith" in a state.
- List hospitals, clinics or pharmacies by organization name and city.
- Find every Nurse Practitioner or Family Medicine provider in a ZIP code.
- Check whether a provider is active (
A) or deactivated (I).
Name searches use an automatic prefix wildcard, so "hospital" also matches "Hospital of Texas". Pagination is automatic: the registry returns up to 200 records per request and the actor keeps requesting pages until it reaches your max results.
๐ What data can you extract from the NPI Registry?
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
npi | 10-digit National Provider Identifier |
enumerationType | NPI-1 (individual) or NPI-2 (organization) |
name | Full provider name or organization name |
credential | Professional credentials such as MD, RN, DDS (individuals) |
status | A (active) or I (deactivated) |
enumerationDate / lastUpdated | When the NPI was issued and last changed |
phone / fax | Contact numbers at the practice location |
addressLine1, city, state, postalCode | Practice location address |
taxonomies / primaryTaxonomy | Specialty classification(s) |
primaryLicense / primaryLicenseState | License number and issuing state for the primary specialty |
Fields the registry has no value for are left out of the row instead of being filled with empty values.
๐งพ Sample output
Real row from a run with {"organizationName": "hospital", "state": "TX", "maxItems": 10}:
{"recordType": "provider-record","npi": "1568657583","enumerationType": "NPI-2","name": "DOCTORS HOSPITAL AT RENAISSANCE, LTD","status": "A","enumerationDate": "2007-09-12","lastUpdated": "2023-11-14","phone": "956-362-3300","fax": "956-362-3372","addressLine1": "5510 RAPHAEL DR","city": "EDINBURG","state": "TX","postalCode": "785391407","taxonomies": ["Psychiatric Unit"],"primaryTaxonomy": "Psychiatric Unit","primaryLicense": "007971","primaryLicenseState": "TX"}
๐ฐ How much does it cost to scrape the NPI Registry?
Pay per event, and you only pay for records that are actually saved.
| Event | What it covers | Price (free tier) | Price (Gold and above) |
|---|---|---|---|
provider-record | One provider or organization with address, phone, specialties and license | $0.02 | $0.01547 |
That is $20 per 1,000 records on the free tier. You are not charged for searches with no matches, for NPI numbers that do not exist, for duplicate rows, or for runs that fail because the registry rejects the input. Set a maximum cost per run in the Apify run options and the actor stops cleanly when it is reached.
๐ How to scrape the NPI Registry in 3 steps
- Open the Input tab and fill at least one search field: last name, organization name, NPI numbers, specialty, state, city or ZIP code. Combine fields to narrow the search.
- Set Max results (default 200). The free plan is limited to 10 results.
- Click Run, then download the dataset as JSON, CSV, Excel or XML.
โ๏ธ Input
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
npiNumbers | List of exact 10-digit NPI numbers to look up |
lastName | Individual providers whose last name starts with this text |
organizationName | Organizations whose name starts with this text |
taxonomyDescription | Specialty filter, for example "Nurse Practitioner" |
state | 2-letter US state code |
city, postalCode | Location filters |
maxItems | Maximum records to return (default 200) |
{"organizationName": "hospital","state": "TX","maxItems": 10}
At least one search field is required. If none is given the run stops immediately with a clear message and charges nothing.
๐ฆ Output
One dataset row per provider or organization, with the fields in the table above. The dataset has an Overview view with NPI, name, credential, specialty, city, state, phone and status. If a search matches nothing, the run finishes successfully with a status message and an empty dataset. If the registry rejects the input (for example a 9-digit NPI), the run fails with the registry message instead of finishing empty.
โ๏ธ NPPES NPI Registry scraper vs alternatives
Prices below were read from the public Apify Store listings on 2026-10-03.
| This actor | scrapers_lat NPI scraper | parseforge NPI scraper | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source | Official CMS NPPES API | NPPES | NPPES |
| Per-record price (free tier) | $0.02 | $0.008 result, $0.009231 details | $0.012 plus $0.16 per run start |
| Start fee | None | None listed | $0.16 |
| Charged for empty or error rows | No | Not documented | Not documented |
We are more expensive per record than these two. What the price buys: no per-run start fee, specialty with state license number on every row, and no charge for failed lookups. For very large one-off exports, a cheaper actor may cost less.
๐ฏ Use cases
- Provider credentialing: verify NPI, status and license before onboarding a clinician.
- Medical billing: confirm NPI and taxonomy details required on insurance claims.
- Healthcare lead generation: build lists of providers or clinics by specialty and location.
- Directory building: populate a referral or insurance network directory with registry data.

๐ Is it legal to scrape the NPPES NPI Registry?
The NPPES registry is public information published by the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, with an open API and no login. The data is provided by federal design so that providers can be identified. Use it in line with applicable laws and the registry terms, and do not use it for unsolicited marketing where that is restricted.
โ Frequently asked questions
Why did my run return 0 results? The registry had no match. Name searches match from the start of the name, so try a shorter text, remove the city or state filter, or check the spelling. The run is free in that case.
Why did my run fail with a registry message? The registry rejects invalid input, such as an NPI that is not 10 digits or a state filter with no other search field. Fix the input and run again. Failed runs are not charged.
How many records can I get per run? Up to your max results. The registry returns 200 records per request and the actor pages automatically. The free plan is limited to 10.
Does it need an API key or login? No. The CMS NPPES API is open.
Does it return individuals and organizations?
Yes. enumerationType is NPI-1 for individuals and NPI-2 for organizations.
Can I look up many NPI numbers at once?
Yes. Put them in npiNumbers. Numbers that do not exist are skipped and not charged.
Why do some providers have several specialties?
Providers can hold several taxonomies. All are in taxonomies, and the primary one is in primaryTaxonomy with its license.
How fresh is the data?
It is read live from the registry at run time. lastUpdated is the registry's own record update date.
