Why OpenAlex

OpenAlex is fully open: no key, no licence fee and no cap on commercial use, which is unusual in this field. It also carries concept tags and citation edges in the same record, so a single export supports both topic analysis and network analysis. Coverage is broader than any single publisher index because it merges Crossref, PubMed, repositories and publisher feeds.

Notes

Abstracts are reconstructed from an inverted index, so the wording is the original but spacing can differ slightly from the publisher version.
citedByCount counts citations known to OpenAlex and typically sits between Crossref and Google Scholar figures.
referencedWorks can be long for review articles; leave it in only if you are building a citation graph.
Concept tags are machine-assigned with confidence scores, so treat low-scoring concepts with care.
