Why EDGAR plus XBRL

Filing with the SEC is mandatory, so coverage of US public companies is complete. The addition of XBRL since 2009 means the numbers inside those filings are machine-readable, so revenue and net income do not have to be scraped out of a PDF. This actor combines both layers: the filing index for what exists, and the XBRL facts for what it says.

Notes

• revenue, netIncome and assets are present only when the filing tagged them and includeXbrl is on. Smaller filers and some form types carry no XBRL; xbrlAvailable tells you which is which.
• Companies use different XBRL tags for revenue, so figures should be sanity-checked against the filing for edge cases.
• The SEC asks API consumers to identify themselves and to keep request rates modest; the actor paces itself accordingly.
• For a cross-company view of one financial figure rather than one company's filings, a frames-based approach over all filers is the better tool.
