Need additional context on the `rank` property

Hello, I see for a sample of 15 Google Places in the same city in Google Maps that there will be some Places that have the same number for the rank property. Could I please receive additional context behind what rank means and how it is determined?

Hey,

thank you for your question. rank property represents the order of a place in listing, when it was first encountered. For example, if you take a look at the screenshot, Crown Shy's rank would be 3, as it was found on the third place in the listing. Hopefully this makes sense. Let me know if you have more questions.

Understood, thanks for the additional explanation. So is the reason why some Google Places may share the same rank in the result set is because the scraper is breaking the map up into small chunks by geographical coordinates and depending on the coordinates the rank of a Google Place may change?

Yes, that's exactly right. Just note that the rank you see in the results is the first occurrence rank:

if we find a place for the first time and it's tenth in the listing, it's rank will be 10
if we encounter the same place and it's first in the listing, it's rank won't change because it's been already stored in the dataset with rank 10
