WHOIS Domain Lookup

WHOIS Domain Lookup turns a list of domains into one row per domain: the registrar, the creation, update and expiry dates, the domain's age, its registry status codes and its nameservers. Paste domains, URLs or email addresses and click Start; https://www.example.co.uk/about and press@example.co.uk both become example.co.uk. Registrant names and emails are not part of the output. It costs $1.00 per 1,000 domains on the Free plan ($0.50 on Business), and the $5 of monthly credit in Apify's Free plan covers about 5,000 domains.

What data does it return?

Field	Description
domain	Registrable domain of the input, found with the Public Suffix List: blog.github.com becomes github.com.
registered	true when the registry knows the domain, false when the name is free, null when no registry answered.
registrar, registrarIanaId	Registrar that manages the domain and its IANA number, as the registry publishes them.
createdAt, updatedAt, expiresAt	Registration, last change and expiry as ISO 8601 timestamps.
transferredAt	Date of the last move between registrars. Only RDAP registries publish it, so it is often null.
domainAgeDays, daysUntilExpiry	Days since registration and days left until expiry, counted at run time.
statuses	Registry status codes such as client transfer prohibited.
nameservers, dnssec	Delegated nameservers and whether the delegation is signed.
lookupSource	rdap or whois, the service that answered.
notes	Anything that went wrong for this domain, for example a registry that did not answer.

How to look up WHOIS data in bulk

1. Paste your list into Domains, one per line. Bare names, full URLs, hostnames and email addresses all work, and duplicates are looked up once.
2. To keep only domains that expire soon, set Only domains expiring within N days, for example 60.
3. Click Start. The actor looks up six domains at a time.
4. The Output tab shows the rows as a table. Export them as CSV, Excel or JSON, or read them through the API with an input like this:

Watching domains for changes

Turn on Return only domains that changed since the last run, give the run a Watch name (or save it as a task) and schedule it daily. Each run compares every domain with the previous snapshot and returns only domains whose registrar, expiry date, statuses or nameservers changed, plus domains that are new in the list. The CHANGES record in the run's key-value store lists each difference with the old and the new value. If Maximum rows or the spending limit stops a run before it returns a changed domain, the snapshot keeps that domain's old record and the next run reports the change.

How much does it cost to look up WHOIS data?

You pay only for the events in the table. There is no start fee, and compute time and proxies are included.

Checking 1,000 domains costs $1.00 on the Free plan and $0.50 on Business. Domains that no registry answered, domains removed by the expiry filter and unchanged domains in the watch mode are not charged.

Limits

• Registries decide what they publish. For .de domains DENIC publishes only the date of the last change, so createdAt and expiresAt stay empty.
• registrarIanaId is usually empty for country-code domains, whose registrars often have no IANA number.
• Some registries publish a registrar handle instead of a name, for example REG-SEZNAM for seznam.cz at CZ.NIC. It is passed through unchanged.
• A registry that is down or rate-limits the lookup leaves the row with registered: null and a note in notes.
• .no domains return no registry data. Norid's RDAP server blocks automated clients in its robots.txt, and its WHOIS terms ban commercial use, so the actor does not ask Norid and does not charge these rows.
• maxItems caps a run at 10,000 domains by default. Raise it for longer lists.

FAQ

Is it legal to do WHOIS lookups?

Registries run RDAP and WHOIS so that anyone can look up who manages a domain and when it expires. The actor reads only those public services and returns data about the domain itself. You are responsible for how you use the results.

Which TLDs are supported?

Every generic TLD and most country-code TLDs. RDAP servers come from the IANA bootstrap registry plus registries that run RDAP without being listed there yet, such as Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Slovenia, the United States and .io. Norway's .no is the exception covered in the limits above. Registries without RDAP are read over WHOIS on port 43. The lookupSource field tells you which one answered.

Why are the registrant's name and email missing?

Since 2018 almost every registry redacts them, and where one still publishes them, we leave them out. Each row describes the domain, not the people behind it.
