Watches the UK Company Names Tribunal (part of the Intellectual Property Office) for new decisions -- rulings on companies registered in the UK under a name that is the same as, or closely resembles, an existing business's name, where someone has goodwill or reputation in that name (Companies Act 2006, section 69: "opportunistic registration"). This is companies trading on a brand's name -- e.g. a stranger incorporating "Red Bull Mining Group" or "Microsoft Academy" -- not a trademark dispute and not a Companies House strike-off/insolvency notice.
The tribunal publishes several decisions a day, every one of them on GOV.UK's own official, public JSON APIs:
- Search API --
https://www.gov.uk/api/search.json?filter_organisations=company-names-tribunal - Content API --
https://www.gov.uk/api/content<page-path>
No scraping, no login, no bot-detection bypass, no paid data feed. Free and official, straight from the source.
Why this is useful
Brand-protection teams, IP lawyers, company-formation agents, trademark watch services and anyone monitoring for their own name being used opportunistically by an unrelated company can watch this feed instead of manually checking GOV.UK, and can filter to just their own brand keyword.
Input
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
keyword | string (optional) | Free text matched against the decision title, e.g. "Red Bull", "Marks". Leave empty to include every respondent. |
dateFrom | string (optional) | YYYY-MM-DD. Only decisions first published on or after this date. |
dateTo | string (optional) | YYYY-MM-DD. Only decisions first published on or before this date. |
fetchDetail | boolean | When on (default), fetches each decision's full record: application number, applicant, respondent, the O/nnnn/yy decision reference, undefended/defended status, and a plain-text summary of the ruling. |
watchLabel | string (optional) | Tag copied onto every output row, to tell several scheduled watches apart. |
maxItems | integer | Maximum decisions to return (default 30, max 500). |
Output (one row per decision)
{"watch_label": "Our brand watch","status": "ok","title": "Company Names Tribunal decision: Binghatti Group Limited","respondent_company": "Binghatti Group Limited","applicant": "Binghatti Holding Limited","application_number": "5962","decision_reference": "O/0870/26","outcome": "undefended","summary": "Application number 5962 Applicant Binghatti Holding Limited objected to the name used by Binghatti Group Limited under the Companies Act 2006. This decision was undefended. ...","published_at": "2026-09-28T07:18:27.000+01:00","decision_url": "https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/company-names-tribunal-decision-binghatti-group-limited","fetched_at": "2026-09-28T09:00:00+00:00","error": null}
status is one of ok, invalid_input, http_error, network_error,
parse_error. A run with zero matching decisions (a valid, empty result --
e.g. a very specific keyword with no recent disputes) is not an error.
Notes
- Respects GOV.UK's own public API; a descriptive
User-Agentis sent and requests are retried with backoff on transient failures. - Pay-per-event: the
decision-foundevent is charged only for rows withstatus: "ok".
