Hard org-field whitelist — officer names, titles and contacts never emit

Every record is built from an explicit allow-list of institution-directory fields only: institution name and alias; address and geography; sector / control / level and offering; institutional characteristics and Carnegie classifications; official web URLs; and institution IDs. The chief-administrator name (CHFNM), the chief-administrator title (CHFTITLE), the general-information telephone (GENTELE), and any column not on the allow-list are dropped at ingest. This is a whitelist, not a blacklist — a field is emitted only if it is explicitly allowed, so a new officer or contact column added upstream can never leak. A directory_whitelist_note states this on every record.

What you get

One institution_record per institution: unitid, instnm, ialias, address/geography (addr, city, stabbr, zip, county…, longitud, latitude, locale), sector/control/level (sector + sector_label, control + control_label, iclevel + iclevel_label, offering fields), institutional characteristics and Carnegie classifications, official URLs (webaddr, adminurl, faidurl, …), IDs (ein, ueis, opeid, …), the directory_whitelist_note, survey_year, file_id, source_attribution, aggregate_note, and the record key unitid. Officer names/titles and contact telephone are never present.

Keeps only rows whose sector_label contains Public, 4-year or above (a value from the sample run above), matched case-insensitively after the source is read and before the maxRecords cap, so the cap counts matches and only delivered matches are billed. searchText does the same across every column. Zero matches end the run as EMPTY_SELECTION with no row charged — if the source has moved on since that sample run, pick a value you see in your own first run. The source is still read in full — this narrows what you receive and pay for, not what the source serves.

🔧 How it works

Source. The actor reads nces.ed.gov — endpoints: https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/datacenter/, https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/datacenter/data/. Public pages and feeds only; nothing behind a login.

Transport. Plain HTTPS from the Apify platform, no proxy. robots.txt is read first and a disallowed path is never fetched. Every request carries an identified contact User-Agent. Pacing: CRAWL_DELAY=0.0.

Terminal states. A run ends NORMAL, CAPPED (your cap was reached), PARTIAL (something was withheld and the message says what), GENUINE_EMPTY (the source was read and truly had nothing in scope) or BLOCKED (the source refused or changed shape — the run FAILS loud and bills nothing). A zero-row run is never reported as a silent success.

Charging. Each institution directory record is charged at the moment it is pushed (institution_record); a row that fails to charge is not delivered, so the dataset count always equals the charged count.

🔧 How it works

Classification labels — codes never guessed

The sector, control, institution level, locale, highest offering, institution size and category code→label maps are read from HD2024_Dict.zip and joined as *_label fields, so codes are never guessed. Underlying codes are carried verbatim.

Institution-level directory — no person-level data

Every value is institution-level directory information. There is no person-level data anywhere in the emitted record, and this actor never constructs any. An aggregate_note states this on every record.

Survey year & file id

survey_year (2024) and file_id (HD2024) are carried on every record — file years differ per survey and are never blurred.

Public domain

U.S. Department of Education / NCES — U.S. Government work, public domain. Attribution (NCES/IPEDS) is carried on every record; seals/logos and marked third-party material are excluded; no implied endorsement.

Filters & bounds

Optional unitids, states, sectors narrow the stream; with no filter the actor streams the whole 6,072-row file (one row per institution) up to maxRecords (hard cap 5000), within a scan bound.

Robots & door

Only the official IPEDS Data Center on nces.ed.gov/ipeds/datacenter/ is read (no API key). robots.txt is re-read on every run and the actor stops on any real Disallow covering the data path.

This actor reads public, logged-out pages and feeds published by nces.ed.gov. It collects only what the source publishes to any visitor, keeps to the source's robots rules (checked on every run), identifies itself with a contact User-Agent, and does not access accounts, private data or anything behind authentication. Use the output in line with the source's terms and your local law; the intended use is B2B research and monitoring.

Q: Do I need an API key or a login?
A: No. The source (nces.ed.gov) is read logged-out; the input schema has no key field and the actor carries no secrets.

Q: Why did my run return 0 rows?
A: Read the run's status message. GENUINE_EMPTY means the source was read and had nothing in scope for your input; BLOCKED means the source refused and the run failed without billing a value event — retry later or narrow the input. A zero-row run bills the start fee only.

Q: How many rows can one run return?
A: Up to maxRecords (default 50). Raise the cap for a bigger run; you pay per delivered row.

Q: How fresh is the data?
A: Every run reads the source live at run time; nothing is cached between runs. Put it on a schedule for a continuous feed.

Q: What formats can I export?
