Hacker News Story Search Export
Keyword search of public Hacker News stories via Algolia; paginated titles, authors, timestamps and links. Export public records as JSON, CSV or Excel from the Apify dataset.
How to use
Enter the inputs below, start a run, and open its Dataset tab when it succeeds. Example input:
{"maxResults": 20,"query": "technology"}
| Input | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
maxResults | 20 | Hard maximum number of validated records to return (1-1000). |
query | technology | Search phrase to send to the public source search endpoint. |
maxResults is a hard ceiling, not a guarantee. Defaults request 20 records. A source may return fewer; the runtime visits at most ten pages and rejects repeated pages. There is no login, proxy or anti-bot bypass.
Output
Story ID, title, story URL (or discussion URL), source endpoint, author and publishedAt when supplied. This exports stories, not comments or votes. Optional fields may be absent. See output.schema.json in the source for the complete contract. Records are validated before they are written to the default dataset.
Pricing
Price: $0.002 per validated result ($2 per 1,000). The current Store pricing panel is authoritative. This Actor defines no custom start charge. Platform and post-run storage charges are governed by the displayed Apify pricing and your account plan.
API
Use Apify's API tab to copy the endpoint for your account. POST the example input to https://api.apify.com/v2/actors/nonstop_poacher~hacker-news/runs, with your Apify bearer token. Retrieve the run's default dataset after it succeeds.
Limitations
Source availability, freshness and completeness depend on the upstream publisher. Empty responses fail conservatively, including legitimate queries with no results; they are not reported as successful extractions. This Actor does not archive historical results across runs. Source terms apply. No affiliation with the source service is implied.
Local use and independence
Run go test ./..., then go run . input.json. Output is written to output.json. The container and Go executable run independently: no Foundry service or LLM key is required.
Operator
Maintained by Wild50. One Validated result is one unique row delivered to the default dataset in this run. Repeated runs can return and bill the same record again.
