World Bank Indicators: country data series by year

$1 per 1,000 rows. Platform usage included. No rental, no minimum.

Pull development indicators from the official World Bank Indicators API: GDP, population, inflation, trade, poverty, life expectancy and the thousands of other series the World Bank publishes. Give one or more indicator codes, a list of countries (codes or names) or all of them, and a range of years. Each value comes back as one row with the country, its World Bank region and income group, the indicator, the year and the number. No API key and no account with the World Bank.

Open it in Apify Console

New to Apify? [Create a free account](https://www.apify.com?fpr=ymnoit) (referral link). Runs from a free plan account return the first 10 results; any paid plan returns everything you ask for, up to your limit.

What it costs

RowsThis actor
1,000$1.00
10,000$10.00
100,000$100.00

Plus $0.001 per run. One flat price, platform usage included, so there is no separate compute or proxy bill. One row is one country, one indicator and one year. A run returns at most 10,000 rows. The latest population and inflation for every country is about 400 rows, about $0.40 a run. Refreshing five indicators for every country once a year, latest value only, is about 1,000 rows, so about $1.00 a year.

Why use it

  • Official numbers, no key. The rows come straight from the World Bank Indicators API. Nothing to sign up for on the World Bank side.
  • Codes or names. Write USA, US or United States. The actor matches the World Bank country list and says in the log which entries it could not match.
  • Region and income group on every row. Each row carries the World Bank region and income level of the country, so you can group and filter without a second lookup. Aggregates such as World or Euro area are marked with isAggregate.
  • Latest value in one switch. Turn on latestValueOnly to get the most recent year that has a value for each country, which is what most dashboards need.
  • Safe for scheduled jobs. An unknown indicator code or a country that is not in the list ends cleanly, with the reason in the log and zero rows if nothing else matched. A typo in the input does not crash the run.

Quick start

  1. Open the actor, keep the example values, press Start.
  2. Or paste this input, which returns GDP and population for four countries over six years (48 rows):
{
"indicators": ["NY.GDP.MKTP.CD", "SP.POP.TOTL"],
"countries": ["USA", "IND", "CHN", "BRA"],
"yearFrom": 2019,
"yearTo": 2024,
"maxItems": 100
}
  1. Download the results as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read them through the API.

For the latest population of every country, use { "indicators": ["SP.POP.TOTL"], "countries": ["all"], "latestValueOnly": true, "onlyCountries": true, "maxItems": 300 }.

Use it from code

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/one_dollar_store~world-bank-indicators/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"indicators": ["NY.GDP.MKTP.CD"], "countries": ["USA", "IND"], "yearFrom": 2019, "yearTo": 2024, "maxItems": 100}'
from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN")
run = client.actor("one_dollar_store/world-bank-indicators").call(
run_input={"indicators": ["NY.GDP.MKTP.CD"], "countries": ["USA", "IND"], "yearFrom": 2019, "yearTo": 2024, "maxItems": 100}
)
for item in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
print(item["country"], item["year"], item["value"])

Use it from an AI assistant

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other assistants can call this actor through Apify's MCP server. Add it with this server address:

https://mcp.apify.com?tools=one_dollar_store/world-bank-indicators

Then ask, for example: "Get GDP in current US dollars for India, China and Brazil from 2019 to 2024 from the World Bank." The assistant needs the indicator code (NY.GDP.MKTP.CD), so include it or ask the assistant to look it up.

Switching from another World Bank scraper

Indicators go in indicators as codes, one per line. Countries go in countries as codes or names, or all. The period is yearFrom and yearTo, or latestValueOnly for the newest value. The core output fields are countryCode, country, indicatorCode, indicator, year and value. One row is one country, one indicator and one year.

Input

FieldTypeDefaultWhat it does
indicatorslist of textnoneWorld Bank indicator codes, one per line, for example NY.GDP.MKTP.CD (GDP in US dollars), SP.POP.TOTL (population), FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG (inflation) or SI.POV.DDAY (poverty rate). The code is in the address of each indicator page on data.worldbank.org. Needed.
countrieslist of textallCountry codes (USA, IND or US, IN) or English names, one per line. Write all, or leave empty, for every country and every group such as World, Euro area or Low income.
yearFromnumberten years up to the last yearFirst year to read. Data goes back to 1960.
yearTonumberlast yearLast year to read. Recent years often have no value yet.
latestValueOnlytrue or falsefalseReturn only the most recent year that has a value, for each country and indicator. The year range is ignored.
skipEmptytrue or falsetrueLeave out country years where the World Bank has no value. Turn it off to see every year as a row.
onlyCountriestrue or falsefalseDrop regions, income groups and other aggregates such as World or Euro area, so only real countries remain. Useful with all countries.
maxItemsnumber100Most rows in the run. Minimum 10, maximum 10,000.

Rows are countries times indicators times years. Four countries, two indicators and six years is 48 rows. If the total is above maxItems, the run stops at the limit.

Limits

  • 10,000 rows per run. For more, run again with fewer countries or a shorter range of years.
  • Indicator codes only. The actor does not search indicators by name. Find the code in the address of the indicator's page on data.worldbank.org. A code that does not exist gives no rows, and the log names it.
  • Recent years are often empty. The World Bank fills in the latest year late and for few countries. By default empty country years are left out. Use latestValueOnly to get the newest value that exists for each country.
  • All countries can be slow. For a few countries a run takes a few seconds. With countries set to all and latestValueOnly on, the World Bank API took about 14 seconds per request in our tests, and a run for two indicators took about 30 seconds.
  • Rate limit. We found no published request limit for this API. The actor sends one request at a time, at most five per second, with up to 40 countries in each request, and it tries a failed request up to three times with a pause between tries.
  • Region and income group are the current ones. They come from the World Bank's current country list, not from the year of the value. Aggregates have neither.
  • Values are as published. The World Bank revises its series. sourceUpdated shows when the indicator's database was last updated.
  • Credit the World Bank. The data is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. Use is free for commercial and noncommercial work, with credit to the World Bank.

FAQ

How much does it cost to collect 10,000 rows? $10, plus $0.001 for each run.

Do I pay for compute or proxy on top? No. Platform usage is included in the $1 per 1,000 price. No proxy is used.

Do I need an API key or a World Bank account? No. The actor reads the public World Bank Indicators API.

How do I find an indicator code? Open the indicator's page on data.worldbank.org. The code is the last part of the address, for example NY.GDP.MKTP.CD for GDP in current US dollars.

How do I get one number per country, the newest one? Set latestValueOnly to true, countries to all and onlyCountries to true. You get one row per country and indicator, with the year of that value.

How current is the data? The actor reads the API at the moment you run it. How recent the numbers are depends on the indicator and the country, because the World Bank publishes most series with a delay of a year or more.

Is it legal? The actor reads data that the World Bank publishes openly. World Bank Open Data is released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, which allows use for commercial and noncommercial purposes with credit to the World Bank. The actor does not log in to anything. Follow the license and the law where you live.

Is this an official World Bank product? No. It is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the World Bank.

Do I need an Apify account? Yes. Actors run from an Apify account, and a free account is enough to start: it includes $5 of platform usage every month. You can sign up here. This is a referral link and it costs you nothing.

Is there a limit on the free plan? Yes. A run started from a free plan account delivers the first 10 results, then ends with a message and a link to the plans. Any paid plan returns everything you ask for, up to your own limit. The price per result is the same on every plan.
