SEC XBRL Company Facts Scraper

Scrape standardized XBRL financial facts for any public company directly from the SEC, up to a million data points per run. Pull revenue, net income, assets, EPS, and any us-gaap concept from 10-K and 10-Q filings. No API key, no registration, no rate limits.

The SEC's EDGAR system holds every public company's financials in machine-readable XBRL format, but pulling a clean time series of a specific metric across filings is a manual chore. This Actor reads the official Company Facts API for the tickers or CIK numbers you provide and returns each observation as a flat, analysis-ready row. You get the raw financial data without building a parser or managing SEC authentication.

Who uses itWhat they scrape SEC EDGAR XBRL Company Facts API for
Financial analystsBuilding a historical trend of a specific us-gaap metric like RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax across a peer group.
Quantitative researchersAssembling a clean, machine-readable dataset of fundamental data for backtesting models.
Investor relations teamsMonitoring competitor filings for key metrics as soon as they are posted to EDGAR.
Data engineersFeeding a data warehouse with normalized, audited company financials without screen scraping.

What it does

This Actor collects XBRL-tagged financial facts from the SEC EDGAR Company Facts endpoint for a list of companies and returns each observation as a single row with the company, concept, value, period, and filing form.

  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ Ticker or CIK input: Provide stock tickers like AAPL or MSFT, or 10-digit CIK numbers. Tickers are resolved automatically using the SEC's official mapping.
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Default or custom concepts: Use the pre-filled list of common concepts (revenue, net income, assets, liabilities, equity, cash, EPS) or specify any valid us-gaap concept name.
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Form type filter: Restrict results to annual reports (10-K), quarterly reports (10-Q), or any other SEC form type. Leave empty to collect all.
  • ๐Ÿ“ˆ Scalable collection: Set a maximum facts limit up to 1,000,000 per run to control the size of your dataset.

Results export to CSV, JSON, Excel, or XML, or straight from the API.

What you can do with SEC EDGAR XBRL Company Facts API data

๐Ÿ“ˆ Build a peer comparison dataset.

A financial analyst pulls RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax for a list of 20 tickers over the last 5 years of 10-K filings to rank growth rates.

๐Ÿ“Š Backtest a fundamental strategy.

A quant researcher collects Assets, Liabilities, and NetIncomeLoss for the Russell 1000 to calculate quarterly book value per share and test a value factor.

๐Ÿ“‹ Monitor new filings for key metrics.

An investor relations manager runs the Actor weekly for a set of competitor CIKs, filtering for 10-K and 10-Q, to update an internal dashboard with the latest reported EPS.

๐Ÿ—„๏ธ Populate a financial data warehouse.

A data engineer schedules daily runs for a universe of 500 tickers, loading the normalized XBRL facts into a Snowflake table for downstream BI tools.

Troubleshooting

I entered a ticker but got no results.

Check that the ticker is valid and actively traded. The Actor uses the SEC's official ticker-to-CIK mapping, which is updated daily. If the company recently changed its ticker, try using its 10-digit CIK number directly.

My custom concept name returns no data.

us-gaap concept names are case-sensitive and must match the exact string used in the filing. Verify the spelling against the FASB taxonomy or a known filing from the company. Try a broader concept first to confirm the company reports it.

The run is taking a long time.

If you requested a large number of facts across many companies, the Actor must paginate through the SEC API respectfully. Reduce the maximum facts limit or narrow your concept and form filters to speed up collection.

I see duplicate rows for the same metric and period.

Companies sometimes report the same concept on multiple form types (e.g., an 8-K and a 10-Q). Use the Form types filter to select only the filing you want, or deduplicate in your analysis by keeping the most recent filing date.

FAQ

QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between this and the SEC EDGAR Scraper? The SEC EDGAR Scraper downloads full filing documents and indexes. This Actor reads the structured XBRL Company Facts API, which returns individual financial data points (like revenue or assets) as clean, numeric rows ready for analysis.
Can I pull data for any public company?Yes. Any company that files with the SEC and provides XBRL-tagged financials is available. You can input the stock ticker or the 10-digit CIK number.
What us-gaap concepts are available? The full us-gaap taxonomy is supported. The input schema pre-fills a set of common concepts like Revenues, NetIncomeLoss, Assets, and EarningsPerShareBasic, but you can specify any valid concept name.
How do I find the exact us-gaap concept name I need? You can browse the FASB us-gaap taxonomy online or use the SEC's EDGAR search to see which concepts a specific company has reported. The concept names are case-sensitive and must match exactly.
Does this include data from 10-K and 10-Q filings?Yes. By default, all form types are included. You can use the Form types filter to restrict results to only 10-K, only 10-Q, or any other specific form.
How far back does the data go?The SEC's Company Facts API generally contains data from around 2009 onward, when XBRL filing mandates began. The exact history depends on the company and the concept.
Can I get quarterly and annual data in the same run?Yes. The API returns observations for all periods. Each row includes the period end date and whether it is an instant or duration period, so you can distinguish annual from quarterly data.
What is a CIK and how do I find one?A CIK is the SEC's Central Index Key, a unique 10-digit identifier for each filer. You can look it up on the SEC's EDGAR search page, or provide a ticker and the Actor resolves it for you.
Is there a rate limit on the SEC API?The SEC requires that automated access does not exceed 10 requests per second. This Actor respects that limit to ensure reliable collection.
What output formats are supported? The dataset can be exported to CSV, JSON, Excel, or XML from your Apify run, like any other Actor dataset.
