Data Sources
- FDA Food Recall -- US Food and Drug Administration recall database covering Class I (dangerous), Class II (temporary health risk), and Class III (unlikely health risk) food recalls with product descriptions and distribution data
- FDA Food Adverse Events -- FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) Adverse Event Reporting System tracking illness, injury, and allergic reactions linked to food products and dietary supplements
- UK Food Hygiene -- Food Standards Agency establishment hygiene ratings for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland with inspection scores and compliance status
- Open Food Facts -- Collaborative global database of food products with ingredients, nutrition data, allergens, and Nutri-Score grades
- UN COMTRADE -- United Nations trade statistics for tracking international food trade flows, import volumes, and origin country analysis
- OpenAQ Air Quality -- Global air quality monitoring for environmental contamination indicators near food production facilities
- NOAA Weather -- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather alerts and severe weather data affecting food production and supply chains
How the scoring works
The MCP produces four scoring models that capture different dimensions of food safety risk.
Ingredient Risk Heat Map cross-references COMTRADE trade flow origins with FDA recall history and adverse event data. Ingredients imported from countries with high recall correlation receive elevated risk scores. This identifies systemic import-related risk before it reaches consumers.
Contamination Pathway Analyzer traces three contamination vectors: biological (pathogen-related recalls and adverse events), chemical (chemical contamination recalls and environmental air quality), and environmental (proximity pollution data). Each pathway receives a severity assessment.
Supplier Hygiene Composite Score combines UK Food Hygiene establishment ratings, inspection history, and Open Food Facts product quality data. Establishments with low hygiene scores and products with poor nutrition grades signal quality control issues.
Seasonal Risk Projector analyzes historical FDA recall timing patterns alongside NOAA weather data to identify seasonal food safety risk peaks -- for example, increased recalls of fresh produce during summer months or weather-related supply chain disruptions.
| Risk Level | Assessment |
|---|---|
| LOW | Minimal recall history, good hygiene scores, no contamination signals |
| MODERATE | Some recalls or adverse events, mixed hygiene ratings |
| HIGH | Multiple recalls, adverse event patterns, contamination pathway detected |
| CRITICAL | Class I recalls, serious adverse outcomes, active contamination |

Use cases for food safety intelligence
Ingredient Sourcing Risk Assessment
Trace ingredient-level risk by correlating import origins with FDA recall history. Identify high-risk sourcing countries and ingredients before they enter your supply chain.
Restaurant Chain Compliance Monitoring
Monitor food hygiene ratings across multiple locations. Track compliance trends and identify establishments requiring intervention before regulatory action.
Food Import Risk Profiling
Assess origin country risk using COMTRADE trade flow data combined with FDA recall correlations. Prioritize inspection resources on high-risk imports.
Allergen and Adverse Event Tracking
Analyze FDA CAERS adverse event data for specific ingredients, supplements, or brands to detect emerging safety signals before they become widespread recalls.
Seasonal Supply Chain Planning
Project seasonal food safety risk windows using historical recall timing patterns and NOAA weather forecasts. Adjust sourcing and quality control procedures for peak risk periods.
Contamination Investigation Support
Detect contamination pathways by analyzing biological, chemical, and environmental vectors simultaneously. Narrow the investigation scope when contamination events occur.
How much does it cost?
This MCP uses pay-per-event pricing. You are only charged when a tool is called -- there is no subscription or monthly fee.
The Apify Free plan includes $5 of monthly platform credits, covering multiple food safety checks at no cost.
Cost examples:
- Search food recalls for a product: $1.00
- Assess supplier hygiene: $1.00
- Full supply chain risk report (7 actors): $3.00
- Trace ingredient risk + seasonal projection: $2.00
How it works
- You call a tool (e.g.,
generate_supply_chain_risk_report) with a food product, ingredient, or supplier name - The MCP dispatches parallel requests to up to 7 Apify actors simultaneously
- FDA recalls, adverse events, hygiene ratings, food product data, trade flows, air quality, and weather alerts are collected
- Scoring functions analyze ingredient risk, contamination pathways, supplier hygiene, and seasonal patterns
- A structured JSON response is returned with composite risk scores, pathway analysis, and recommendations
FAQ
Q: Does this cover all countries? A: FDA data covers US-regulated products. UK Food Hygiene covers England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. UN COMTRADE provides global trade flow data for ingredient origin tracking. OpenAQ and NOAA provide worldwide environmental and weather coverage.
Q: Can it predict recalls? A: It identifies risk signals correlated with historical recalls -- high-risk ingredient origins, adverse event patterns, and seasonal timing. These are risk indicators, not predictions.
Q: Does it track dietary supplements?
A: Yes. FDA CAERS adverse event data covers both food products and dietary supplements. The analyze_adverse_events tool can search for specific supplement brands or ingredients.
Q: How current is the recall data? A: FDA recall data is fetched live at query time and reflects the current published state of the FDA recall database.
Q: Is it legal to use this data? A: All data sources are public government databases and open food databases. See Apify's guide on web scraping legality.
Q: Can I combine this with other MCPs? A: Yes. Use the Agricultural Commodity Climate MCP for crop-level supply disruption analysis, or the ESG Supply Chain Risk MCP for broader supplier due diligence.
