Pain points
- Verifying an Alabama contractor on the LBGC license-search site means paging through one big client-side table by hand.
- The board's roster mixes 8,993 commercial licensees (2026-10-09) from every state, with all of a firm's classifications packed into one text cell, so 'every roofing contractor based in Alabama' is not a filter you can run on it.
- Pulling specialty classification, city, and expiration across many licensees one at a time doesn't scale.
What we solve
- Verify any Alabama LBGC general contractor by license number (exact, including S- and IA- prefixed numbers) or business name (substring) — one search.
- Leave the search empty to export the roster instead: filter by classification code or word, status (active by default), mailing state, city or ZIP, up to every matching licensee in one run.
- Returns specialty/classification, city, phone, street address, ZIP, and license expiration from the official registry; an export adds fax, bid limit and mailing state. Pay per record, empty results free.
Summary
Look up and verify any Alabama general contractor from a single search, or pull the whole Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors (LBGC) roster as a filtered export. Type an LBGC license number or a business name and get back the contractor's specialty classification, city, phone, street address, ZIP, and license expiration date. Leave the search empty and the same run reads the board's own roster file: 8,917 active licences on 2026-10-09, 8,908 of them with a phone number, narrowed by classification (a code such as BC, or a word such as 'roofing'), status, mailing state, city or ZIP. Built for subcontractor vetting, compliance checks, and building lists of licensed commercial contractors working in Alabama.
Who it's for
- GCs and hiring managers vetting Alabama subcontractors
- Insurance underwriters and lenders running KYC on contractors
- Compliance teams and marketplaces verifying LBGC licenses
- RevOps and BD teams enriching contractor records
How to use
Set the input, run the actor, and collect results from the run's dataset (export to JSON/CSV/Excel, or pull via the Apify API). Example input:
{"queries": ["CONSTRUCTION"],"maxResults": 25}
See Inputs below for every available field.

bid_limit | Export only: bid limit, e.g. 'Unlimited' or '$1,000,000' (null for subcontractor registrations) |

Sample:
{"state": "AL","license_number": "8","business_name": "DUNN CONSTRUCTION CO INC","license_type": "BC: BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, H/RR: HEAVY AND RAILROAD, HS: HIGHWAYS AND STREETS, MU: MUNICIPAL AND UTILITY","city": "BIRMINGHAM","phone": "(205) 592-3866","address": "P O BOX 11967","zip_code": "35202","expiration_date": "9/30/2026","matched_by": "business_name","source_url": "https://licensesearch.alabama.gov/genconbd/Details/2"}
Inputs
| Field | Required | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
query | no | string | "CONSTRUCTION" | An Alabama LBGC general-contractor license number (exact) or a business name (substring). The board publishes a numeric license number; anything non-numeric is treated as a name search. Leave this and 'Search query (batch)' empty to export the whole LBGC roster instead, narrowed by the filters below. |
queries | no | array | ["CONSTRUCTION"] | Look up many in ONE run instead of starting a run per lookup. Takes the same values as 'Search query'. Combined with 'Search query' if you fill both, and duplicates are removed. Billing is unchanged: you are charged per record returned, not per entry submitted. |
classification | no | string | — | Statewide export only. An LBGC classification code (BC, BCU4, MU, H/RR, HS, E, M, D, SP, EV, SC, ADM, REP, SUBCONTRACTOR, or a '-S' subclassification such as BC-S) matched exactly, or a word from the classification description, e.g. 'roofing', 'plumbing', 'electrical'. Empty = every classification. An unrecognised value is ignored with a log line; if nothing you gave is recognised, the run returns a free row saying so instead of the whole state. |
classifications | no | array | [] | Several classifications in ONE run (a licensee matching any of them is returned once). Combined with 'Classification' if you fill both. |
status | no | string | — | Statewide export only: active (default; includes licences LBGC lists as extended past their expiry), inactive, or all. |
statuses | no | array | [] | Several statuses in ONE run. Combined with 'Licence status' if you fill both. |
addressState | no | string | — | Statewide export only. Two-letter state of the licensee's mailing address, e.g. AL for Alabama-based firms. LBGC licenses many out-of-state contractors (4,222 of 8,993 licensees had an Alabama address on 2026-10-09), so leave empty for every licensee. |
addressStates | no | array | [] | Several mailing-address states in ONE run. Combined with 'Mailing-address state' if you fill both. |
city | no | string | — | Statewide export only. Mailing-address city, exact match ignoring case and punctuation. LBGC publishes no county, so filter by city or ZIP. |
cities | no | array | [] | Several cities in ONE run. Combined with 'City' if you fill both. |
zip | no | string | — | Statewide export only. Mailing-address ZIP, 5 digits (a ZIP+4 is matched on its first 5). |
zips | no | array | [] | Several ZIPs in ONE run. Combined with 'ZIP code' if you fill both. |
maxResults | no | integer | — | With a search query: cap on matches PER QUERY (default 50), so a batch cannot silently return only the first rows overall and read as 'no match'; with detail pages on, each match costs one page fetch. Statewide export: cap for the whole run (default 500, a spend control). The full roster is 8,993 licensees (measured 2026-10-09), so 100000 returns everything that matches; the run log states how many matched when the cap cuts it short. |
includeDetails | no | boolean | true | Search queries only: fetch each match's detail page to add address, ZIP, and expiration date. Disable for a faster, roster-only run. The statewide export reads LBGC's roster file, which already carries address, ZIP, phone, fax, bid limit and expiry, so no detail pages are fetched there. |
proxyConfiguration | no | object | {"useApifyProxy": false} | Optional. The Alabama LBGC site is reachable directly; a proxy is not needed. |
Pricing (Pay Per Event)
You pay per result (dataset-item) — no charge for empty runs. Example: 100 verified license records at $0.004/result ≈ $0.40.
Illustrative — the final per-result price is set at publish time. Apify platform usage (compute) is billed separately per your plan.
Use cases
- Statewide lead list — every active LBGC licensee with a roofing classification and an Alabama mailing address was 159 firms on 2026-10-09, all 159 with a phone number; every active Building Construction (BC) licensee based in Alabama was 733.
- License verification — confirm an Alabama contractor's specialty classification and expiration before hiring or onboarding.
- Record enrichment — turn a license number or name into a full structured record for a CRM, marketplace, or vetting workflow.
- Compliance checks — pull authoritative LBGC data on demand for audits and due diligence.
- Lender / insurer due diligence — verify a contractor's standing straight from the state board's registry.
Why this actor
- Straight from the official Alabama LBGC license registry — authoritative, not a stale third-party copy.
- Search by license number (exact) or business name (substring), or export the roster with filters; licence numbers are unique across all 8,993 rows, so nothing is returned twice.
- Pay per record; searches with no results are free.
Limitations & updates
Covers the Alabama LBGC commercial general-contractor registry only (this board does not license residential home-builder trades). Results reflect the board's published roster at run time and change as it updates. A name search matches the business-name column and is capped per query (default 50); in a search, address, ZIP and expiration come from each match's detail page and are fetched only when 'Include detail pages' is on. A statewide export is capped per run (default 500, up to 100,000). About half of LBGC's licensees have an out-of-state mailing address; use the mailing-state filter for Alabama-based firms. Email, bond, insurance and issue date are not published by LBGC and are returned null; county is not published either.
FAQ
Where does the data come from?
The official Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors (LBGC) public license-search registry — public, authoritative commercial general-contractor license data.
What can I search by?
An LBGC license number (exact match, e.g. 4510 or S-53030) or a business name (case-insensitive substring). Both return the matching licenses from the board's roster. Leave the search empty to export the roster instead, filtered by classification, status, mailing state, city or ZIP.
How big is a full export?
Measured 2026-10-09: 8,993 licensees, 8,917 of them active, and 4,172 of the active ones with an Alabama mailing address. An export defaults to active licences and 500 rows; set maxResults to 100000 for everything, or status to 'all' to include the 76 inactive licences. LBGC publishes no county, so narrow by city or ZIP.
What fields do I get?
License number, business name, specialty classification, city, phone, street address, ZIP, and license expiration date. A search gets address, ZIP and expiration from each licensee's detail page; an export reads them from LBGC's roster file and adds status, fax, bid limit, classification codes and mailing state.
How am I charged?
Pay-per-result — per license match returned. No charge for searches with no results.
Is this personal data?
It's public professional-license data (business and license records as the LBGC publishes them); we add no personal/PII enrichment.
How current is it?
It reflects the LBGC's live license-search roster at run time, so results are as current as the board's published data.

Works with AI assistants (MCP)
Callable as an MCP tool, so Claude, Cursor, VS Code Copilot and other MCP clients can run it directly. Grab the config from the MCP tab on this page — Apify hosts the server and keeps that snippet current, and OAuth signs you in on first connect, so no API token goes in your config file.
Then just ask:
"Look up Alabama contractors matching 'CONSTRUCTION' — licence number, expiry and address."
Rows carry address and phone; leave includeDetails on to pull each licence's detail page as well as its search row. Runs started this way bill exactly like any other run.
