NPI Registry Lookup: bulk NPI search and US healthcare provider data
Validate a list of NPI numbers, or pull every dentist, cardiologist or pharmacy in a city, state or ZIP code, in one run. Use it for provider credentialing, claims and NPI clean-up, healthcare lead lists and CRM enrichment. The Actor queries the official CMS NPPES NPI Registry API (free, public US government data) and returns the provider name, credential, primary specialty (taxonomy), license number and state, practice address and phone, mailing address, authorized official and other identifiers. $0.80 per 1,000 provider records; invalid NPIs, unknown NPIs and empty searches are free. No API key, no login.
What you get from the NPI Registry Lookup
- Bulk NPI validation. The NPI check digit (Luhn with the 80840 prefix) is verified before any request, so typos are flagged instantly and cost nothing (
found: false). Unknown or deactivated NPIs are free rows too. - Provider search by specialty and location. Combine a specialty ("Dentist", "Nurse Practitioner", "cardio*") with lists of cities, states or ZIP codes. One search runs per city x state or per ZIP, pages of 200 are fetched automatically (up to the NPPES limit of 1,200 per search), and duplicates across searches are removed and charged once.
- Primary specialty filter. NPPES matches a specialty against all of a provider's taxonomies, so a "Cardiology" search also returns pharmacists and family doctors with a secondary cardiology code. Turn on Primary specialty only to keep real specialists; filtered-out providers are not charged.
- Clean, flat columns for spreadsheets:
practicePhone,practiceCity,practiceState,practicePostalCode(ZIP+4 formatted),primaryTaxonomy,primaryLicense, plus full nested addresses, all taxonomies, other identifiers and Direct-messaging endpoints.

Individual providers also get firstName, lastName, credential (MD, DDS, NP...), gender, soleProprietor, and the license number and state of each taxonomy. Export as CSV, Excel or JSON, or send it to Google Sheets, Make, Zapier, n8n, webhooks or the Apify API. A SUMMARY record in the key-value store has run totals.

Example input: bulk NPI validation
{"npis": ["1881018208", "1265131338", "1234567890"]}
Example input: dentists in three Texas cities
{"taxonomyDescription": "Dentist","entityType": "individual","cities": ["Austin", "Dallas", "Houston"],"states": ["TX"],"primaryTaxonomyOnly": true,"maxResultsPerSearch": 1200,"maxRecords": 5000}
Example input: pharmacies by ZIP code (raw NPPES query)
{"searches": [{ "taxonomy_description": "Pharmacy", "postal_code": "10001", "enumeration_type": "NPI-2" }]}
| Setting | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| npis | none | NPIs to validate or look up |
| taxonomyDescription | none | Specialty text, * wildcard allowed |
| entityType | any | individual (NPI-1) / organization (NPI-2) |
| organizationName, firstName, lastName | none | Name search, * wildcard after 2 characters |
| states / cities / postalCodes | none | One search per ZIP, or per city x state |
| primaryTaxonomyOnly | false | Keep providers whose primary specialty matches |
| searches | none | Raw NPPES API v2.1 query objects |
| maxResultsPerSearch | 200 | Up to 1,200 (NPPES API limit per search) |
| maxRecords | 1000 | Hard cap on charged rows per run |
Speed: searches fetch 200 records per request, so a 1,200-record search finishes in a few seconds. NPI lookups take one request each, roughly 2 per second, so 1,000 NPIs take about 8 minutes. The Actor paces requests and backs off automatically if the registry is busy.
Getting more than 1,200 results: the NPPES API stops at 1,200 results per search. Split a big search by city or ZIP code (for example postalCodes: ["787*", "786*"]); the run log warns you when a search hits the limit.
Pricing
Pay per event: $0.0008 per provider record ($0.80 per 1,000), with Bronze/Silver/Gold discounts. Invalid NPIs, unknown or deactivated NPIs, empty searches and providers removed by the primary-specialty filter are free. A tiny Actor-start fee applies per run.
FAQ: NPI Registry Lookup
What is an NPI number? The National Provider Identifier is a unique 10-digit number that every US healthcare provider (individual or organization) uses in HIPAA transactions such as claims. CMS issues it through NPPES.
How do I check if an NPI is valid? Paste it into NPI numbers. The Actor checks the check digit first and then whether the NPI Registry lists it as active. found: false with an error explains why (bad format, wrong check digit, or not in the registry).
How do I find a doctor's NPI by name? Enter the first and last name, optionally with a state or city. Use * for partial names (Jo*).
Can I get a list of all providers of one specialty in a state? Yes. Use the specialty plus a list of cities or ZIP prefixes for that state, so no single search goes over the 1,200-result API limit. Duplicates are removed automatically.
Does the NPI Registry include email addresses? No. NPPES publishes practice and mailing addresses, phone and fax numbers, and sometimes Direct-messaging endpoints. For emails, run the organization websites through the Website Contact Details Extractor.
Is the data free to reuse? The NPI Registry is public US government data that CMS must disclose under the Freedom of Information Act, free of charge and updated daily. The data is as reported by providers, and an NPI does not prove a license or credential, so check critical decisions against the record at npiRegistryUrl and the state licensing board.
Is this an official CMS product? No. This Actor is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by CMS or HHS. It only uses the public NPPES NPI Registry API.
